Are you ready for the summer? Are you ready for the good times? Are you ready for the birds and bees? The apple trees? And a whole lot of indie rock? Well you're in luck because that's what we have here with the first mix of Summer Fridays 2012.* I am hoping to do these every Friday, though I'm gainfully employed now (we don't get summer Fridays at my job, unfortunately) and have a lot less time - and energy - than I have the last four years. Which is good! Anyway, we'll see how I do. This kickoff mix [...]

Where other reggae reissue labels slowly fade away or have just plain given up, the mighty Pressure Sounds refuses to knuckle under. What's more: it digs deeper still. Just when I thought the Scratch vaults were all but empty, here's High Plains Drifter , a wicked collection of pre- Black Ark Lee Perry productions of 45's only issued in Jamaica. The Ethiopians - Awake The Faithful Brothers - Iniquity Workers
I'm just over here drawing up some Ivy League Spins stickers for all of you lovely people, and thought I would share what I'm listening to. Here's a short playlist of what's blaring through my headphones. Enjoy: Prince Fatty - Bedroom Eyes Dub (ft. Natty) Prince Fatty - Need It (ft. Little Roy) Hugh Roy - Flashing My Whip [...]

The Upsetter: The Life & Music of Lee Scratch Perry is a feature length documentary about one of the most fascinating and influential [...]
NPR's fantastic The Record blog brought my attention to the Dub Invasion Festival, which just wrapped up what was surely a Kingston-tastic 10 days in Boston and New York. Among the attendees were legendary pioneers of dub Lee "Scratch" Perry, who co-produced many of Bob Marley's most groundbreaking tracks, along with Adrian Sherwood, Mad Professor, and Dubblestandart. Dub music was so named because innovative Jamaican studio technicians and producers would manipulate or "dub" pre-existing master tapes so that the bass and drum sections, along with intermittent snippets of vocals, horns, and keyboard parts, would disproportionately characterize [...]

It's back! After a break of lord only knows how many years and many a compilation album, the first stop for Reggae-lovers the world over is back. You can read all about the new society here and sign up for their newsletter to get updates and the usual. As well as kicking the Appreciation Society back to life, Trojan have got a new compilation album coming out on Monday. It's got a mix of old classics and a whole host of unheard reissues/re-releases, as well as some never-before-heard stuff. I've [...]

A not-so-sunny Sunday brings us edition 62 of Wild Weekend , which this time around features two brand new acts, a reggae classic complete with mondegreen, and a lost lofi Dutchman to boot. Is that wild or what? Gonna start with the gorgeous Bettye LaVette though, as I just bought a much recommended collection of the soul diva's late sixties Memphis recordings with the Dixie Flyers. Thirteen songs and not a dud between them, with We Got To Slip Around my current fave. "You've got another woman, and I've [...]

You can't overstate the importance of pioneers. Whether by intention, or by accident, some folks set the trends that change the world, and the fact is that the history books aren't always on point in terms of dishing out credit. In the case of Lee Scratch Perry, we're talking about one of a handful of artists whose musical ideas form the foundation of reggae, dub and Jamaican music as we know it today. In short, we're talking about one of the most underappreciated producers in popular music history. The Upsetter [...]
Words cannot describe the love I have for Lee "Scratch" Perry , and his music. Check out the preview (above) and keep an eye out for the documentary, as it will be playing in a limited number of theaters. The Upsetter (Lee "Scratch" Perry Documentary trailer) // Hat tip to @Questlove from The Roots for pointing me to what looks like an epic reggae documentary on one of most fascinating producers in the business. - MW

The Upsetter: The Life and Music of Lee Scratch Perry is the result of seven years of Lee Perry digging by directors Ethan Higbee, Adam Bhala Lough, who speak now about Lee's true spirit and his love for burning things and National Enquirer's brand of gossip—especially when it involves Britney Spears. This interview by Lainna Fader. I know you screened several different versions of the film before settling on the version screening at the Downtown Independent. How did you know when you had something that truly captured Lee's spirit? [...]
When it comes to dub, you don't get more seminal than Lee "Scratch" Perry, the visionary producer whose unpredictable mind is the place where dub as we know it today pretty much first came to life (with some help from King Tubby, of course). If you're a follower of dubstep, or any other genre that [...]

Bob Marley Vs Lee Scratch Perry by the Upsetters was recorded in 1970 and originally released as two LPs, Soul Rebels and Soul Revolution . To say Bob touched many facets of life would be a understatement as he brought Reggae and peaceful idea of brotherhood to the masses. The Clash recognized Lee Scratch Perry just as much as what Bob and the Upsetters laid down early on before the Wailers existed. This record has some killer psychedelic reggae that Lee Scratch Perry produced and even had influence on Hendrix & Sly [...]

Download audio file (03-Santa-Claus-Go-Straight-To -The-Ghetto.mp3) I'm going to be honest with you kids, Christmas isn't really one of my favorite holidays. Outside of the whole family aspect (and Jesus. GP are ya wit me!) I could really do without it. But unlike the cover art may suggest (props to the big homie NO for coming correct btw) this comp is not a Bah-Humbug-a-thon. It's actually a dedication comp. For December 25, 2010 marks the fourth anniversary of the passing of one of the most influential figures in modern day music - and one of my absolute favorite [...]

Yes... and here we go again. Wild Weekend #34 is here, and the hits just keep on coming. Soul, new wave, garage, reggae: you name it, we´ve got it. Just have another wild one. Reading Eric Davidson´s inspiring Gunk Punk book found me digging up all kinds of garagey sounds from the wild nineties again. Enter Seattle´s Fall-Outs, whose short, sharp and snotty Here I Come used to be a favorite of mine back in the days. Moving into soul territory now, with an early seventies, [...]
