Stream the cassette here - Hard Rubbish by Lower Plenty Lower Plenty will release this long player through Special Award records on the 15 April 2012, it's pretty good and doesn't sound like the other bands that the members originate from. It's got a nice eerie folk sound that you should probably just have a listen to. Follow the label for the official release here - http://whothehell.net/Nx3
The UV Race, out of Melbourne, often gets lumped in with Eddy Current Suppression Ring, a band whose version of garage rock really does distill lust and alienation and boredom into protean simplicity. And while these two bands are connected by geography and friendship and professional collaboration (Mikey Young of ECSR recorded and mixed Homo), The UV Race is a good bit more complicated. Its

The 7-inch single has been around since 1949. That's 62 years and counting! In my humble opinion the 7-inch single is still the essence, pinnacle and acme of pop perfection. Optimally, it's one song, one side (Some try to squeeze on more). That's no room for screwing up. You always hear that releasing a 7-inch is a money losing proposition, but that thankfully, doesn't keep pop geeks from doing it. In honor of true blue pop geek vinyl junkies out there, here is the first installment of the annual Finest Kiss top 40 7-inch singles countdown. [...]

I don't know about you, but unfortunately I have like, responsibilities, so I'm in on this Sunday eve, hoping to heal the last remnants of hangover, so I made this down-tempo mix. On their sophomore album, Australia's the UV Race brings garage rock to a dirtier and grimier level than most. The band's loose song structures and loose playing bring a lot of, well, "character" to these recordings. There are flubbed notes everywhere, and it's all for the sake of sounding noisier. Chaos within limits is the name of the game on Homo , and I'll be dammed if these guys didn't make sounding messy feel fun as hell! There's an obvious Velvet Underground influence flowing throughout this. A lot [...]
Some bands are meant to be listened to on records, the technology allowing their soundscapes to entrance the listener and let the production shine. Others, however, are best suited to be listened to in a live setting - the bass throbbing, the guitars distorted, the vocals imperfect. Australia's sextet UV Race undoubtedly falls into that second category, as Homo 's cacophonous jangling sounds aren't exactly the most pleasing to the ears. While the appeal of the haphazard organ, energetic stream of consciousness monologues, and frequent noise breakdowns in a small venue is seriously tempting, the best efforts [...]

MP3 A track from Homo : The 2nd album from Aussie garage rock outfit the UV Race. These guys tip the scales at six members, and bring on keys and brass to make their noisy, strung out jams sound a little more refined-you know, like finely aged toilet wine. That's a good thing, because this band is reminding me of just about everyone from the Fall to the Velvet Underground. Delicious. On "Girl In My Head," the band sounds like they just got out of bed. At first I assumed the [...]

Sydney's an OK place to live! There's the Sydney Opera House, and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and those are pretty great. The thing is, Sydney can sometimes feel like a gross, soulless tourist town where every band plays electro-rock and wears $600 jeans and works in advertising (which is a valid lifestyle choice! Totally). That's why R.I.P. Society 's recent rise to glory is great for the usual reasons that a great record label is great (this year they released records from Royal Headache, Boomgates and Circle Pit and virtually every other Australian punk band worth listening to), but [...]

image snagged from 62Stockon * If you are the type who goes all Tron for Kraftwerk , Gary Numan and Berlin 's Riding on the Metro, you should probably get on this. The first batch of Total Control ' s third single sold out pretty quickly, but as luck would have it Smart Guy Records has seen fit to press up another run of the 7 inch, only this time on sterile white vinyl. Total Control [...]

MP3: Total Control - Paranoid Video Real austere, urgent "cyberpunk" vibes on this new track from the latest project for analogue heroes Mikey Young ( Eddy Current Suppression Ring , Brain Children ) and Daniel Stewart ( The UV Race ). These dudes have made a name for themselves playing enthusiastically sloppy punk rock, but this situation is totally different: drum machines and synths hammering out frosty new wave beats with a general feeling of breathlessness and subdued violence. It's pretty unsettling stuff, really, all droning and atonal and hurried. You can buy [...]

(Note to the reader: This is an epic tale, long in the telling. If you doubt your mettle, please at least scroll down and check out the respective headliners, who were both rad). Sometimes the music options in this town present such a tasty dilemma. Friday night saw The Ferocious Few at Fort Mason, Cap'n Jazz at Bimbo's, and down in Polk Gulch, two shows too good to pass up. I'm set to cover Kelley Stoltz at the Hemlock , while some of my familiars have committed [...]

For once, I am in complete agreement with Bono . All anyone need do is look at the way China has successfully curbed its citizens from enjoying freedom of information. If torturing is good enough for Americans to inflict on suspected Al Queda operatives, why not do the same for those who provide free music to the general public? I am so committed to this very notion that I have attached a taser machine to my testicles in a show of support. This expensive contraption is designed to activate any time [...]

Much like their fellow countrymen and labelmates Eddy Current Suppression ring, UV Race take a cue from 70's punk and create raw garage full of haphazard guitars, throbbing rhythm and caustic emotion. Straying a bit from the guitar-heavy palette, the band adds a kick of keyboard and some male/female vocal interplay to the mix but still seem to drink from that well-spring of acerbic rock that followed in the wake of Television and The Voidoids. Taught, tense and stretched to break at any second, there's definitely something going on down under and its damn well about time that the U.S. [...]

The UV Race - 'Gore Orphanage' ( mp3 ) I'll get it out of the way in the first sentence - these guys sound a lot like Eddy Current Suppression Ring. If you don't like that band then you won't like The UV Race. If, like me, you love Eddy Current Suppression Ring, then this will "rock your boat" (pun intended). They're even signed to Aarght! Records, the label run by ECSR/Brain Children mastermind Mikey Young. But that's not meant to be reductive- both bands work within a similarly restrained aesthetic framework and sing with a [...]

I don't listen to enough simple and repetitive punk music to compare The UV Race to anything I have heard recently. Maybe this a positive from their debut self titled record. If I knew more music of a similar style It would probably not last long at the top of the playlist as it quickly becomes all too much for bedroom listening and the basic layouts can be easily slipped under the table. The Melbourne outfit show a clear use of simple pop style rhythms, represented by short easy rhyming verses and a mixture of instruments used [...]
