On September 24, one of the most important albums of our time will celebrate its 20th birthday. Few albums have had as much of an impact on contemporary rock music, even Indian rock, as Nevermind. To celebrate its two-decade anniversary, SPIN magazine got some popular and some not-as-popular-but-frequently- namedropped indie acts to cover all the 13 (yup, they even got singer-songwriter EMA to cover hidden track 'Endless, Nameless') tracks on the album. Artists include indie rock acts Surfer Blood , Titus Andronicus and Telekinesis, singer-songwriters Amanda Palmer and Jessica Lea Mayfield, and two acts that Nirvana frequently covered [...]
( Editor's note: I'm somewhere around 90% certain that "Spin Magazine" will sue my shit if I post the cover song that I am going to discuss in this post. As such, you get no "mp3" to "download" here. But I'm not going to get you all hot and bothered for a track and leave you hanging. If you want the whole Nirvana cover record, all you have to do is like Spin on your Faceboooks. Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy. If you'd just like the Vaselines' song that is the principle focus of this post, [...]

In honor of the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's Nevermind , SPIN convinced some bands to cover each track from the album for a tribute record: Newermind . You can see the full tracklist and download it for the price of your email address and a "Like" at SPIN 's Facebook page . As far as the most interesting part of this project, I'm in agreement with SPIN editor Steve Kandell, as told to NPR: "The most intriguing angle was getting bands like the Meat Puppets and the Vaselines, who were [...]

SPIN magazine devotes its new issue to the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's "Nevermind" — "the album [well, one of them, anyway] that changed everything." Going beyond the usual words and pictures, though, the magazine solicited 13 artists to cover the songs on "Nevermind" for a free compilation titled "Newermind." Included are two legendary artists Kurt Cobain famously covered — the Meat Puppets (who dial down "Smells Like Teen Spirit") and the Vaselines (who dial down "Lithium"). Standouts include Butch Walker & the Black Widows (who have some fun with "In Bloom"), Titus Andronicus (who roar [...]

This year marks the 20 th anniversary of Nirvana's Nevermind , which gives publications across the globe a chance to get nostalgic about the grunge era. Spin is leading the pack at present—the magazine has produced an entire covers album, in which a series of artists have been picked to rework the songs from the record. There are some impressive names involved, including a few of Kurt Cobain's peers (Meat Puppets, the Vaselines), artists who clearly owe him a sizable debt (JEFF the Brotherhood) and some intriguing newer performers (EMA, Amanda Palmer). The entire album is available to [...]
Here's an interesting tidbit: Nirvana 's seminal album Nevermind turns 20 this year (how's that feel, Generation X?). A grunge masterpiece that transcended its boundaries, the album is as relevant now as it was when it hit the shelves in September 1991. Case in point: SPIN has put together Newermind , a cleverly titled tribute album that sees acts both new and old covering each of the record's 13 tracks (including the hidden "Endless, Nameless"). Now available as a free [...]

Let the Devil out Rollins Band Nice Comments: Rollins Band does Van Halen , poorly. Joe#1 Fugazi Sub Pop 7" Singles Club Comments: Fugazi's entrant into the Sub Pop singles club is not interesting or challenging. Sinking Black Flag Loose Nut Comments: Probably the best song off Loose Nut. The short uneven album came at the end of Black Flag. Still this song about descent into isolation and depression is prophetic. Vikings [...]

My Morning Jacket's Terminal 5 ResidencyIn October, New York City hosted the annual CMJ Music Marathon and, for the week, became the undisputed epicenter of all that is hip and happening within the music industry. Offering an alternative to the multitude of day parties and showcases that looked to the future, My Morning Jacket held their own weeklong event – an MMJ Marathon,

Click on any image to enlarge | All photographs by Sonny Malhotra With the strength of the weekend's line up weighted heavily on Friday and Saturday, today starts off somewhat slower than it's forerunners. Wandering over to the pavilion well after mid-day Peter Parker is the first thing we happen to catch. Not the most inspiring start to the days line up, the Glaswegian four-piece play little more than paint-by-numbers punk inspired indie, with feigned angry riot grrrl vocals and formulaic guitar led melodies. Needless to say we don't stick around [...]

OK, so here's part two of the A-Z from 2010... Well, if truth be told this is actually, more specifically, the N-Z of 2010... Again as a rule, one song per band... If you want to see the first part then click here ... Without any further ado here we go... [...]

Late autumn is a time for wearing sweaters, drinking hot drinks, and snuggling up with someone you someone you love (or at least, someone you like more than a friend). What better way to kick off that process than listening to soothing, catchy, indie twee pop? The 1900's are just that kind of band. Hailing from Chicago, this once-septet/currently-quintet makes gently sweet and precious pop music that's drawn comparisons to Fleetwood Mac, Belle and Sebastian, Vampire Weekend, and early Velvet Underground. Over the course of their new sophomore record, Return of the Century, the 1900s [...]
