review by Chris Estey On air this week, you'll hear the DJ's featuring bands on the Sub Pop label and especially those performing during this weekend's 20th Anniversary Festival at Marymoor Park from noon to 10pm on July 12th and 13th. On the KEXP Blog, we'll be featuring one or two bands each day and giving away tickets to SP20! Today, we're featuring The Vaselines . The Vaselines were joyfully founded by Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee in beautiful Glasgow in the late 80s, and balanced perfect underground [...]

Take a fairly unknown Scottish indie band, then apply some grunge from Seattle, USA. You've got this week's Saturday covers. The Vaselines are what I like to call "pretty music." By this I mean nice little melodies, light sounding backing music, etc. They write very simple catchy songs, and sound like they don't have a care in the world. They're a good band to listen to if you just want to relax a bit. The Vaselines - Son Of A Gun [...]
Who: Wire When: May 30th Where: South Street Seaport More Dates Listen: Wire - "I Am the Fly" Thoughts: I am so glad that the River2River shows are back, and to top it off they are kicking off the whole thing off with a comeback from Wire! Like it's not enough to go down to the pier to drink some beers with a bunch of friends and watch some music, no they had to go and add a legendary post-punk

[Via nme.com ]: The Vaselines performed a reunion gig last night (May 16) at Tigerfest in Dunfermline . Supporting Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub , the band arrived on stage at 7.45 at the town's Carnegie Hall to a small but enthusiastic crowd before launching straight into 'Son Of A Gun' - one of three tracks that were once covered by Nirvana . "This is our first [...]

Just stopping in to say hello & to give you more of the sweet jams you come here for. Also to give you the heads up that Sandy Acres Sound Lab will be returning again tomorrow after a brief holiday hiatus. The Vaselines -- Slushy This song is college to me. This was the first song I'd ever heard by them & if you love stuff like The Pastels & Beat Happening, then it's totally up yer alley. Kurt Cobain was a big fan. [...]

two things i can think to say about the vaselines are that they made really great, scuzz-fuzz indie-rock and also that they weren't all that good at playing their instruments, which in its own way was kind of a good thing. the band wasn't around for all that long, just a couple years, but the fact that they existed at all makes the world a slightly better place: the vaselines--the day i was a horse (m4a) the vaselines--son of a gun (mp3) oh, and if you're [...]
Far from presenting a glossy, nostalgia-packed rendition of the Nirvana glory years, About A Son seeks to demystify an icon. There are no actors, no embellished narratives and there is definitely no big budget mischief. Comprised entirely of audio material from 25 hours worth of interviews by biographer Michael Azerrad, the result is a mosaic of introspective monologue that director AJ Schnack hopes will break down the pop culture caricature that Cobain has become. The visual accompaniment was shot in Aberdeen, Olympia and Seattle, the cities [...]

Variation Two of A Prelude to Interpol's Our Love To Admire : No Trendy Réchauffé (see yesterday's post for the (cranky) introduction). [ré·chauf·fé -- n. 1. Warmed leftover food; 2.Old material reworked or rehashed. [French, past participle of réchauffer, to reheat, warm over, from Old French rechaufer : re- , re- + echaufer , to warm (from Vulgar Latin *excalefāre : Latin ex- , intensive pref.; see ex- + Latin calefacere , to [...]

Growing up in the suburbs, out of the signal range of college radio and without many friends that listened to anything other than Bryan Adam's Greatest Hits, The Forrest Gump Soundtrack and Aerosmith's Pump, my introduction to indie-rock was a slow and painful one. As I found my way from Nevermind to Nico, there were a few bands that always stood out as the touchstones. The bands that all the other bands were stealing from. Here are a few classics. Name drop them around most record store clerks and they'll teach you a secret handshake and [...]

What you need to do, right, is a) get a dressing gown (I recommend the fluffy £20 ones at M&S) and then b) open it up like you're going to flash someone on the bus (it helps if you're wearing something underneath, but don't pretend like you don't know what I'm talking about) and then c) give yourself a good spin (think of Prince when he'd spin around on stage and the tail of his coat would twirl around like a little sex propeller. Yes, you can achieve this with a dressing gown and the right velocity) and finally, d) [...]

So, this is goodbye, at least for a fair bit. I'm taking tomorrow for myself, and then I'll spend the next handful of days with my family before flying to London on Thursday. If there aren't any major complications with that part, I'll be tucked in my new home on Friday...but I expect that Simon and I will have some, um, catching up to do over the weekend. Business should resume as normal week after next and thanks again from both of us for all the well-wishes. Since I'll have a fairly lengthy absence, I'm giving you my [...]

i'm reading rant , the new chuck palahniuk book. while it's an entertaining read, i can't help but feel that it's something of a sloppy ripoff of burrough's place of dead roads . even down to the repeated descriptions of overpowering stenches and lips constantly "peeling back" over teeth. still one of my favorite creepy turns of a phrase... the vaselines - molly's lips #### how fucking cool is this car ? [...]
The second night of the Versacoustic gigs took place on Wednesday. Versa is some sort of new beer which, quite uniquely, tastes just like every other flavourless mass-produced lager out there. Still, they clearly put the shits up the artists playing because every single one of them mentioned it in a slightly nervous way, which was a little peculiar. Consequently I feel it is my duty to say: don't bother, it's just the same as the rest of the piss-water these buffoons try and sell us. Anyhow, this evening's lineup was not quite [...]

we keep letting the neigbor cat from upstairs into the apartment: but she scares us: her name is "halloween". #### the vaselines - monsterpussy david bowie - cat people ####
Welcome to Throwback Thursday. This week we roll back the time machine to 1992 , the year after the Grunge Explosion of '91 and Nirvana's ascedency towards rock massiveness. Nevermind became the Number One album in 1992, yet the year saw several other notable highlights including: -Rage Against The Machine released their debut -Dr. Dre dropped The Chronic. -REM busted out Automatic For The Peeps. -You couldn't watch MTV without not seeing the video to "November Rain." -You couldnt't turn on commercial radio and not hear The Spin Doctors, [...]
When is Kiss going to record the holiday tune I wrote for them, "Let's Put the X in Xmas"? Or its perhaps more appropriate alternate version, "Let's Put the Uh! in Hanukkah"?

Holloween isn't officially until tomorrow but the grown-up version of trick or treating, i.e. getting tanked in a silly costume, hit its prime over the weekend. A few sights and sounds... the Vaselines - "the Day I Was a Horse" I, horse. //the Vaselines - the Way of the Vaselines: a Complete HIstory - buy Modest Mouse - "Trailer Trash" J. [...]
