As we speak, some thirty-five thousand plus songs reside on the iPod. Some of those songs were culled from the twelve-hundred vinyl albums and six hundred or so compact discs covering the wall. There once was five times the number of CDs, but that was before the purge of '03. In the '90s, while the head buyer for a large record store, there must have been ten-thousand CDs that I received from distributors, labels, managers, and publicists. For a few years I was receiving new music in such a flurry that it was impossible to [...]

In case you hadn't noticed there's a ton of great pop bands springing up in Seattle that are totally geared towards my tastes. Blooper go for my Razorcuts , Jason Falkner and Teenage Fanclub (who's Song To the Cynic they cover) jugular. They released their Ballard Avenue EP last year which flew under my radar, but Blooper are now on my locked in my sights with their big jangly Rickenbacker fueled riffs and an excellent new EP on the way. Secret Song is from that upcoming EP and if [...]
Here is a rarely seen television commercial for Velvet Crush's 1994 Teenage Symphonies To God album. Or at least I think it's a commercial. Maybe it's just a music video for "Hold Me Up" made to look like a commercial for the album. The director certainly captured the look and feel of late-night cable commercials of the era. My favorite part is when the pop-up graphics proclaim " it's the Rhode Island sound! " This was absolutely one of my favorite albums of the 90s, and its still worth hearing today. Thanks to my [...]

Velvet Crush - Weird Summer

CRECD197 was released during hugely successful times for Creation Records , an era during the mid 90`s where Oasis , Ride and Primal Scream were selling record numbers of units for fun. Artists like Teenage Fanclub , My Bloody Valentine and The Boo Radleys were forming iconic Indie fan bases before the sad demise of Britpop towards the end of the `90`s. A very good time indeed for Creation Records, in fact a tidy era for most British music on the whole. Love or loathe him, Alan McGee [...]

Image From Here I was told recently, by an internet friend, that I am my own worst enemy. And the fact is that statement rings very true. Most of the time, I don't even like myself. Loving myself seems to be a huge stretch to how I feel. Maybe, it's because I spend too much time alone, buried deep into my thoughts, worries and fears. I don't get around very much these days and tend to be extremely introverted. I am too wrapped up in myself, too wrapped up in finding fault in all my ways. [...]

Image From Here It really seems to me that the pace of life has gotten out of control these days. Everyone is in a hurry to get something done or to be somewhere fast. Even though I am unemployed right now, I still feel the 'tug' of the maddening, fast pace of life. You see it everywhere; at the store, driving in your car, and even twittering on the internet (I do like to twitter though). Don't get me wrong, sometimes I thrive on this pace. It gets me moving and doing things [...]

According to the blurbiage on this single, Velvet Crush "wanna write brilliant pop songs" and "have a healthy contempt for the music biz in general" and try their best to "sidestep trends in favour of pure honesty". Preciousness aside, this is a good indie pop single, though they don't beat Teenage Fanclub at their own game. Released on Seminal Twang as their July 1991 single. Cover art by Jad Fair. Nice thick vinyl too. Side A mp3: Velvet Crush - Ash and Earth Side A mp3: Velvet Crush - [...]
What a post delay, huh? I'm very much the type of person whose interests come in waves and the blog wave just didn't hit me for a while there. Long-time readers are accustomed to this pattern, so I won't necessarily apologize, but I felt a warning was necessary for newer readers. Blah, blah, blah, but now the weather smacks of fall (and fall's my favorite) and the wave crashed into me today and here I am. Another wave that's pummeled me (aside form a momentary desire to use annoying Internet abbreviations) the past week is [...]
"Ew, boy. I am looking forward to getting over to the Iron Monkey in two and a half hours." -- Tom, having second thoughts after a caller is already sloshed "Look son, this is the Big Leagues. You're barely Tee-Ball level." -- Tom, optioning Hesh for reassignment to the minors "******* **** and * ******* *******." -- Excerpts of two unaired resposes from author Ken Rogers "He'll film Barbarella in an elevator in Austin. It will cost $4,800. And it will star Rose McGowan." [...]

Regardless of the fact that Ernesto has dampened our end of the summer Labor Day spirits, even if the sun was shining the rolling around of this September weekend always evokes a nostalgic symbolism...which is why The Tyde's California warmth is so comforting and welcoming. The LA based five piece owes as much to the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean as to The Byrds, Jesus & Mary Chain and Teenage Fanclub. The Tyde's a family affair fronted by Darren Rademaker on singing and guitars, his [...]

One of the cool things about living on the central Florida east coast is the proximity to Kennedy Space Center. My current location is only about 30 miles south of the Center. I literally can watch the Space Shuttle Discovery launch from my back yard. And believe it or not, I can also feel the shock waves after the launch. Years ago, I would get a pass and watch the launches a lot closer which was really cool. I spent a night one time and watched an early dawn launch that way. The other cool thing in this area is [...]
