Last Thursday night (3/8/12) I saw a trio of enjoyable acts at The Independent . It's always nice to go in looking forward to the headliner and being pleasantly surprised by the opening acts. This was the case last Thursday. Micah P. Hinson kicked off the night. I missed most of his set, but I enjoyed the three songs I did catch. I would never have expected an Americana singer-songwriter to be opening for The Twilight Sad, but I appreciated the melancholy and irony of his work. Up [...]

All of you avid b3(mad)scientists out there should know that The Velvet Teen is one of our favorite (and most underrated) bands of ALL TIME. The band's commitment to challenging themselves with new sounds, styles, and writing approaches (and absolutely nailing them) is really unparalleled. The band is playing select dates through the month of March, which not only includes sets at SXSW (we will be there!), but also a gig at the The Satellite in LA tomorrow March 9... and we're giving away a pair of tickets to the show! Catch the band as they play songs [...]

Ah, the coveted album anniversary tour - it doesn't get quite better than that. I remember heading to the 9:30 Club earlier this year to check out Coheed and Cambria, who were playing The Second Stage Turbine Blade - a high-school favorite of nearly everyone I know - in its entirety. My opinions on their later material aside, the opportunity to relive this seemingly ancient album was incredible and a much-needed dose of nostalgia. Last week, Minus the Bear , another long-time favorite of mine, came to the same venue and pulled a [...]

The Velvet Teen (@thevelvetteen) began the night last Tuesday at Webster Hall with synth distortions and head-banging, progressive drums - certainly not the sort of band that allows for casual listening at the bar. Their music was complex and required complete, rapt attention, especially to comprehend the complex patterns produced by the drummer. Sitting right up front with the rest of the band, he actually felt more like a frontman than anyone else. The Velvet Teen has been around for quite a while, releasing their first EP in March of 2000, so be [...]

Chicago: home of hot dogs, mediocre sports teams, and malort. Oh, and lots and lots of hipsters. Minus the Bear and the Velvet Teen managed to show up at the Metro and sufficiently killed it. Got to the venue a touch late and missed a few of the Velvet Teen's songs, however they played a good variety from their discography. Old school jams like "Radiapathy" and :"Tokyoto" with newer jams like "No Star". Judah Nagler sounded awesome and switched from guitar to keyboard a few times as well. VT's new quartet line up really stepped their live show up since [...]
Side With Us Records showcased four stylistically diverse bands at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco Friday night.

Aussie ex-pats now holed up in Brooklyn, High Highs, come with a sound that is as comforting as it is familiar. On "Open Season" the duo sound (in the best way possible) like a lot of the bands I spun in high school, pieces of Radiohead, Death Cab for Cutie, The Velvet Teen, even little bits of Smashing Pumpkins bubble underneath the song's simple yet stunning melodies. "Open Season" is available as a FREE download on the group's bandcamp, check it below. High Highs - Open Season High [...]

MP3: The Velvet Teen - No Star The Velvet Teen 's return has been much appreciated on this blog, and now we've got a video for their newest ep's most badass song "No Star". With an ending that rips, the challenge was up to them to visually display something beyond comparable and I'm happy to say they've succeeded. Check it out.

MP3: The Velvet Teen - No Star My excuse was that I was in internet hell for 3 months, but what's yours? The Velvet Teen released a digital ep that was completely slept on last year that's 4 songs as a 4 piece and it slays completely: it's evil, fucker. I can understand that since the release of "Cum Laude", the world has changed so much (RIP Slowdance ), but TVT have returned to continue construction on the planet they started building many moons ago and I can't wait [...]

Sonoma County's The Velvet Teen have just digitally put out their first release in about four years, a four-song EP called No Star . The band's now a quartet - Judah Nagler, Casey Deitz, Matthew Izen and Josh Staples - and the new songs feel louder than their past stuff, but still plenty catchy. It's difficult for me to even try to think about this band in any critical capacity, so clouded is my perspective by nostalgia for one of the first local acts I ever truly adored. Instead, [...]

I first heard Northern California's The Velvet Teen shortly after they released their second full-length, the orchestral Elysium. But it wasn't until they released their next album, Cum Laude! , that I fell in love. Cum Laude! was one of those records that I connected with instantly upon the first listen -- in much the same way I did with At the Drive-In's Relationship of Command . It's such an inspired record brimming with energy, powered by some of the wildest drumming that I've ever heard (see "Building a Whale"). Singer Judah Nagler (voted [...]

Here goes with part 24...I'm not even half way through this countdown yet and I'm amazed at how many tracks I've managed to rack up so far. I guess without calculation, I thought I'd be alot more limited than I actually am. That said, I'm still going to tread carefully and treat it as though every minute is of a incredibly high value. 79. MP3: The Velvet Teen - Radiapathy #2 - The Velvet Teen - Out Of The Fierce Parade Slowdance Records 2002 Joey On Out Of The Fierce Parade: This album changed my life completely. And I don't mean listening to it. I mean I never would've left Connecticut, made the connections I made or anything without the existence of this album. For that it will always be special, but musically it is so perfect it only adds to the myth of it for [...]
