Ah, the coveted album anniversary tour - it doesn't get quite better than that. The Velvet Teen (@thevelvetteen) began the night last Tuesday at Webster Hall with synth distortions and head-banging, progressive drums - certainly not the sort of band that allows for casual listening at the bar. Chicago: home of hot dogs, mediocre sports teams, and malort. Oh, and lots and lots of hipsters. Minus the Bear and the Velvet Teen managed to show up at the Metro and sufficiently killed it. Aussie ex-pats now holed up in Brooklyn, High Highs, come with a sound that is as comforting as it is familiar. I first heard Northern California's The Velvet Teen shortly after they released their second full-length, the orchestral Elysium. But it wasn't until they released their next album, Cum Laude! , that I fell in love.
