The Velvet Underground and Nico gemütlich. Doch so richtig glücklich waren die Fans von VU wohl nie mit ihm: „Nicht tiefsinnig genug, zu banal!", schrien sie und weideten sich lieber in den existentiellen Liedern, wie Heroin oder Venus in Furs . Zum Teufel mit ihnen! dachten sich da die [...]

The last mixtape I made had so many contenders that I had to craft a follow-up. A similarly alternative rock-based selection with a twist, this playlist continues the themes of contemplation, unanswered questions and timeless dilemmas (especially of the heart and loneliness). It's a long one, so I won't comment on every pick. Opener Suede's "Beautiful Ones" gets things off to an upbeat, albeit slightly bitter, start. Stereophonics' hit single "Dakota" is a hopeful ode to a flame, like similarly optimistic "This Time Tomorrow" by The Kinks. Red Hot Chili Peppers' classic "Scar Tissue" and The Raveonettes' "Heartbreak Stroll" are [...]

Itching for a new post category, I thought of starting a mixtape series, similar to the frequent lists compiled by a lot of other blogs. It might overlap a whole lot with some other posts, so it might be short-lived, but I'll just have to see how it plays out. For the first mixtape, I dug out ten tracks all about the first day of the week. Coincidentally, all of these Sunday songs are excellent, with many addressing the two sides of Sundays. On one hand, it's always a sort of mental (and often physical) hangover from the previous week, [...]
A few books for which I have a disproportionate number of songs! George Orwell's 1984 has been inspiring artists ever since it came out, and for good reason; it's chilling to read even today. [ BUY 1984 ] David Bowie wanted to make a musical based on 1984, but when Orwell's estate refused, ended up with 1974's Diamond Dogs instead. It's one of my favorite albums, harsh and monstrous, straddling the gap between his glittering glam [...]

Back in September, Southern alt/garage rockers Black Lips released their fifth LP, the surprisingly impressive, Good Bad Not Evil [ buy ] . The album's second single Veni, Vidi, Vici is a grainy, lo-fi gem that stirs up feelings of The Velvet Underground and Television . The music video for the 2 minute 26 second track is an equally grainy and lo-fi piece of film that looks like it was shot on 8mm by a stoned guitar tech. Needless to say, it's [...]

Pe Devotchka i-am descoperit pe soundtrack-ul unuia dintre cele mai bune filme pe care le-am vazut in 2006: Little Miss Sunshine . Abia apoi am aflat ca melodia lor, How It Ends poate fi auzita si in trailerul de la Everything's Illuminated desi pe coloana sonora a peliculei, lipseste. De ce i-am ales pe ei la 10 Days Of Covers? Pentru ca ultimul lor EP ce dateaza din 2006 - Curse Your Little Heart - contine niste coveruri magnifice la piese de-ale lui Frank Sinatra, Siouxsie And The Banshees si bineinteles, The Velvet Underground. [...]

Hello all, and Merry XXX-Mas from ThaBombShelter. I'm finally ready to unveil my XXX-Mas gift to the world wide webbernets. This first day will require a bit of an explanation, so that's how we'll start. You see, a few weeks ago I was listening to my library on shuffle when I stumbled upon a song that I had never heard, but that was incredibly familiar. That song was "Strangers" as performed by Piebald, from their latest disc, "Accidental Gentlemen". The reason it was familiar was because of the original song's recent inclusion on the [...]

The "Days of the week" Theme Songs has reached its final post. It's Sunday, and I had no problems finding Sunday-songs at all. I guess musicians like the lazy Sundays, and we like the music they make. Here is the last of the "Days of the week" mixes: SUNDAY SONGS. Please comment if you like it, hate it or if you would like to add something. Thanks for listening. The songs will be online for one week only. The Monkees - Pleasant Valley Sunday [...]

Sunday's are pretty commonly neglected by bloggers, it is an understandable practice but not a fair one to you kind readers so I am going to do my darndest to stop slacking on the Sunday posts. I decided there was no better way to start than with a cheesy mix of songs that have "Sunday" or "weekend" in the title. Luckily they are all great. Next week an actual sunday morning mix will come. [mp3] Johnny Cash - Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down [mp3] Spoon - Sunday Morning Wednesday [...]

Too tired to do much of any good on the writing side of things, I do however have another sleep mix for you all that is quite great for us insomniacs. There is something noticeably better about my sleep when I fall asleep to music, it's quite interesting really. I never wake up in the middle of the night, I feel better in the morning, and I'm calm when I wake up, rather than that awful panicky feeling. [mp3] Rosie Thomas - If This City Never Sleeps [mp3] [...]

A little while ago, I saw the interview with Sienna Miller on the Daily Show. Now, those interviews are rarely especially insightful, but they did speak about Edie Sedgwick, subject of new film ' Factory Girl ' a little bit. Miller was adamant that, in terms of "famous for being famous" celebrities, Sedgwick was miles away from our modern day Parises, in that there was at least merit to what she did. Watching 'Factory Girl' tonight, I struggled to see this merit. I don't really know a lot about the woman's life, [...]
