Walt! Goreck i Fifteen years ago, DJ Shadow released Endtroducing ..., a timeless masterpiece that secured his legacy as a pioneer of instrumental hip-hop and inspired several generation of beatmakers. With his latest The Less You Know, The Better , released last month on Verve, the legendary turntablist returns to his roots after experimenting on his confrontational and polarizing 2006 album The Outsider . He speaks here about recalibrating people's expectations, performing in the Shadowsphere, and meeting Francois Mitterand in the sixth grade. This interview by Lainna Fader. You've said [...]

To celebrate their 15th anniversary, NME is listing the top 150 tracks of the last 15 years.
There is something magical about this time of year. It's hard to put my finger on it but the changing colors, the crispness in the air, and the mood of the people all combine wonderfully for me in a near perfect, romantic and quite comforting melange. Essential to all of this, of course, is great music. Many of my favorite bands have released new music this fall (reviews coming soon!) but it's going to be a while before I decide if any of their albums are Classic Fall Records. What makes a Classic Fall [...]
David Fendick and Jonny Hooker are two multi-instrumentalists from Leeds, UK. Together they are Fossil Collective, an alternative-folk band influenced by artists like Simon and Garfunkel, Neil Young, and Fleetwood Mac. It's easy to dismiss the band's sound as standard indie-folk with your parents' favorite groups as their influences. However, on closer inspection, you can [...]

Suicide Sundaes – stop your grinnin' and drop your linen. Every Sunday, electblake of Earmilk will bring you the weeks dirty servings, and some old favorites through a throwdown-throwback to simpler times. A time when bangers were big, remixes were bigger, the bassline bled, and we didn't care about anything as long as came in kicking and left screaming. To hell with sketchy Sunday, we want to shove another dragon down the hole. It's come - they piled up and now are ready to hit the street - it's trash, electro trash to be exact. That and some [...]

Our retro weekend continues with another classic track. This one goes out to our mates on the east coast as they get ready for the hurricane. A track from The Verve off of 1993's A Storm In Heaven. Hope y'all Make It Till Monday.

White Lotus may not have much to chose from on SoundCloud, yet, but from what's up so far, let's just say if he keeps this momentum up he'll be suffocating the top slots soon. Check out my three favorites, if you like hip-hop // you'll like this. Biggie x Kanye - Suicidal Thoughts (White Lotus Runaway Mashup) I see too many good mashups ruined because the DJ throws in vocals or instrumentals that aren't all that good. White Lotus, however, blends too masterpieces and quite well. It may not be [...]

Tweet This song is a burner, clocking in at over 8 minutes long, so you should scroll down and hit play first before you read any further (presuming you wanted to read anything anyway...it's not terribly insightful just so you know). The Horrors' latest album "Skying" has been extremely well received, including by ourselves, with the praise being extremely well-deserved. From The Horrors ' first album to this, their third, they've gone through a huge transformation not only stylistically but sonically [...]

I heard this yesterday, seeing as it's all over every blog ever, and thought "Oh wow, revitalizing 'Bittersweet Symphony' mashups, how noble!" Well, it turns out it's actually 4 months old, so it's not really a revitalization. However, it is the best damn "Bittersweet Symphony" mashup I've ever heard, and for that, we can thank DJ White Lotus . Nas is just so damn powerful, he makes everything that much more epic. Tweet Buy the album from Amazon - Vinyl / MP3 / CD There are a lot of people who still hate The Horrors for having the audacity to be lauded by the British music press before releasing a single note of music. When their first album dropped, it was subject to a wave of negativity that meant it never really had a chance. It didn't help that [...]

Ex-Verve bandmates, Nick McCabe and Simon Jones teamed up with Mig Shillace and Davide Rossi to form The Black Ships shortly after the Verve's Forth sessions, which we talked about here . The band has finally self-released their first material packaged as the Kurofune EP. Download below by entering your email addy. The EP is one continuous MP3 that spans just under 26 [...]
Aussie band Set Sail are causing chaos overseas with the trio playing semi-nude at the Desigual 'Come half-naked, leave fully dressed' promo in London, on the 16 June 2011. Check it out! This first official single by Manchester four-piece Airship managed to catch me pleasantly off-guard. Judging by the fast-paced drums that kick things off, I was fully expecting some kind of dreary pop-punk drivel, but the band deftly subverts that expectation, delivering a song much more in keeping with the washed-out, stoned-off-your-nut-on-the-Pyr amid-Stage vibe of early Verve, albeit rather more propulsive and less messianic. The drums are meaty, the guitars distorted and so drenched in reverb that they become an immense wall of sound, and the urgent, heartfelt vocal is very effective and... Read more..

The industry is changing everywhere. A sweet example of this is the LA Noire Remixed EP which features classic jazz tracks remixed into total chill modal. Got folks like Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday being remixed by folks like Moody Mann and DJ Premiere. This is one of the EPs that makes you look super cool at parties (just sayin!). All the stuff Verve puts out is sick. Get this EP Digitally on May 17th and get that LA Noire game, looks very interesting. Hey-Ba-Ba-Re-Bop (Midnight [...]
Check out "Bittersweet Collage," another jam from Sojorn. The track has a real old school vibe, taking the Verve Pipe's "Bittersweet Symphony" and adding tons of old school rappers on top of it. Sojorn complements the mash-up with a funky, electr

Tweet If I had to limit myself to one observation about Soft then a) this would be a pretty short post, and b) I would say they sound British. While I'm willing to admit that I may be biased on this front, I just have to say kudos to them for that. There's no point pussy-footing around the fact that British music is, was, and in all likelihood will continue to be demonstrably better than US music, according to me. Not only this, they [...]
Researching Police mashups, I came across Salacious Sound 's list of Gigamesh remixes, which included a remix of "Roxanne". I loved it so much that I had to post it up here, but in doing so I found a whole mesh of other remixes by him or rather the group he's in. Gigamesh is a part of the trio, DiscoTech. What I like so much about DiscoTech's remixes is that they don't overemphasize the electro aspect. I find with a lot of electronic remixes - especially dubstep - that they get too caught up [...]

It was an exciting year when The Verve reunited in 2007. They played some amazing shows and actually went back into the studio to produce another record. Unfortunately, Forth was a complete letdown for fans, and the group split again. Nick McCabe and Simon Jones quickly put up a MySpace page as " The Black Ships " and a streaming studio jam ensued. Hope. If you go to http://www.theblackships.com and click [...]
