Depending on personal inclination, there are two kinds of album that reviewers look forward to. The first is with ten songs, making giving a numerical grade at the end of the review easier. More interesting is an album like this, where you're never quite sure where songs end, or where they begin. The Grandad Galaxy has so many lovely snippets stuck together that, like a child's glittery homemade Christmas card, you can't tell gold from glue. You can see why The Go! Team have Dudley's own Rob Jones as their personal remixer, and now that he has got [...]

The Voluntary Butler Scheme is not a government sponsored enterprise to get the unemployed back to work serving cucumber sandwiches and weak tea to the prime ministers' Bullingdon Club alumni. It's really Rob Jones, a one man band from Stourbridge in the UK. Not the sort of one man band you find in the subway with a drum, harmonica, guitar and dog on a string but the sort that specialises in witty, whimsically lo-fi indie that harks back to the best pop of the late 1960s and sounds like Jim Noir being pebbledashed with bits of Babybird (Stephen Jones no relation!), John Lennon, Fatboy Slim [...]

Here's an oddity which should delight and befuddle in equal measure. The Voluntary Butler Scheme is Rob Jones, a one-man band who uses a stack of instruments, stitched together with woozy psychedelic production, to create twinkly electronic pop music. It's a peculiar brew, combining computerised swing, glitchy bells and whistles and cut-up sound collages with jaunty indie and a sprinkling of shoegaze, and it's highly likely that you'll either eat it up greedily or want to hurl it into the nearest canal. From Dudley, in the West Midlands of England, comes Voluntary Butler Scheme with 'Yo Yo Star' , a Disney kids choir-infused slice of weird pop music. The song doesn't even appear on the forthcoming second album Grandad Galaxy ("truly a musical cabinet of curiosities"). The Go! Team have remixed his other new track 'Do The hand Jive' too. The Voluntary Butler Scheme returns with EP and video The Chevreul EP released 4th April 2011 on SPLIT RECORDS Live at The Macbeth, London - Tuesday 29th March Some people are just bursting with tunes. The two lineups for Coachella and Bonnaroo have been announced. After reviewing both, I've come to the conclusion that Lolla will probably get the pick of the litter. Who would've thought that the once venerable music festival that toured nationwide, only to be halted, and revived would be the hotspot in American music festivals. There are a ton of smaller festivals scattered throughout the country, but not with as much pull. Designer Drugs - Through The Prism (Drop The Lime Remix) Koralleven-Honeymine (Memory House Remix) Adele [...]

I always thought Voluntary Butler Scheme was alright. Not incredible, sometimes not my cup of tea lyrically, but on the whole I enjoyed his music (and also his production on other people's music, such as Sweet Baboo) - but I really didn't foresee myself blogging excitedly about a new release from him in 2011. The Chevreul EP has just gone up on bandcamp and Rob, still based in the midlands if his tagging is anything to go by, has really developed and expanded his sound. It's never been straight down the middle and bland pop [...]
Spent several hours last night checking promo mails and to tell the truth; what a bumpy ride it was. I really tried to be open-minded, unbiased, flexible, tolerant etc. in a way I honestly doubt I've ever been before. But still it was tough as hell finding six tracks I felt was worth sharing. I know I've written this many times before, but some of the songs are of such poor quality that the promo stuff has to be mailed out with either great naivety or with tongues firmly in cheeks. In the end I did manage to find these [...]

Gwyneth Herbert announces "Perfect Fit" release date and a free remix download Gwyneth Herbert is an artist who continues to redefine (and defy) our expectations. A singer-songwriter with one foot in the jazz world and one somewhere in the future, with pierrot-dotted eyes, polka-spotted shoes and swanny whistle in hand she may appear as whimsical as a Bonzo Dog, but writes beautiful melodies and has a poet's grasp of the world around her.
