I pulled a time-honoured, if slightly risky skill out of the bag last night in order to get my own way, and it came through in spades. I was most pleased! Jonny from the Edinburgh Man podcast happened to have a spare Arcade Fire ticket spare, so I met him in town for a quick pint and we went up to the castle to what was my first properly big gig for years. Gig cuntery, however, made itself know in the most irritating manner as soon as the band started playing. First off, a considerable stream [...]

Not of course, given the business I work in, like I can't fill it up to the brim again in a second of course. I mean, there's the Rob St. John and Ian Humberstone as well as the All Creatures Will Make Merry vinyl artwork to finalise of course. But that can, realistically, wait until Monday. I think. So that leaves me with tomorrow and nothing to do but hang out with Mrs. Toad. The house has been so hectic with guests, and with the Festival August might well be worse, that at least one day to spend [...]
Almost the last man standing from that explosion of Detroit indie, The Von Bondies are over . Jason Stollsteimer is rebranding, and moving on: "The Von Bondies are done -- I'm the only surviving member," he declares. "The Von Bondies was never a band, it was a solo project dressed up as a band. It's because my last name is Stollsteimer -- it looks stupid. It's not like Elvis Presley or Buddy Holly. It looks stupid and it's too late to change my name now." "I did it for ten years," he adds, "and it [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Music ITA Records As the leader of the Von Bondies , Jason Stollsteimer gained notoriety in the early 2000s by riding the wave of Detroit's garage rock revival (a scene that, most notably, produced his one-time sparring partner Jack White of the White Stripes ). Nearly ten years on, White and most of the other acts who earned esteem from tastemakers like the NME [...]

Photo via The Von Bondies' Facebook page The Von Bondies are songwriting geniuses. That two minutes and 15 seconds of "C'mon C'mon," are the best two minutes and 15 seconds a person can experience. That memorable riff in the beginning, followed by raw, uncontrollable rock energy and Jason Stollsteimer's powerful vocals, are the main components that make "C'mon C'mon," and The Von Bondies' other tracks, stand out so much. Starting out as, The Baby Killers, The Von Bondies eventually changed their name, and gained mainstream attention from being affiliated with The [...]
For the next installment of City of Music, which debuts Monday morning on Gimme Noise, director Dan Huiting caught up with touring act the Hounds Below for a video shoot. Huiting tells us how he foun
Great rock tune from a Detroit-based band whose frontman has had a heated, at times physical, rivalry with White Stripes' Jack White over production credits for the band's first album.

In this installment of our 100 Albums You Might Have Missed series we look back at the year 2005. The year brought some solid records ranging from blues-inspired rockers to some well-crafted releases in the folk/alt-country category. Throw in some acoustic diddies, some southern rock and a sweet pop-rock album to round out the bend. A good year indeed. The Weight - Ten Mile Grace Released: September, 2004 The debut album from one [...]

You know those coppers in police programmes who stop worrying about catching criminals and worry more about box-ticking, stats and generally keeping within the process and staying out of trouble? For the last couple of weeks I have been the record label equivalent of exactly that. For the last couple of weeks I have been going through two years of paperwork, trying to add up costings for releases, getting the overall accounts in order for my tax return, and even sorting out our domestic filing. We are so shit with post that I found Christmas cards from 2008 [...]

Sleepy Sun Three road-home-in-the-calm-after-th e-storm-and-watched-the-lightn ing-churn-up-the-sky reasons to make sure you are grounded and head on over to the Double Door this evening... 1. San Francisco's Sleepy Sun are another cog in SF's psychedelic revival machine. The machine is running quite effectively these days. Sleepy Sun, however, inject their music at times with a bit of folk, soul, and dare I say FM style lite-rock. Sure, they freak out and reverb the crap out of you but sometimes they are willing to just breeze along like a sleepy sun-filled day. [...]

Throughout the history of rock, there have been cities in the U.S. that have had their turn as the epicenter of the next wave of music. Athens, GA brought us R.E.M. and created a jangle-rock genre that took The Yardbirds sound to another level. Minneapolis brought us Husker Du, The Replacements and a raw sound that had a profound impact on music. The impact of Seattle with the development of grunge has been well documented. At the turn of this century, Detroit brought us The White Stripes, The Von Bondies, The Dirtbombs and a series of [...]

The Von Bondies' second LP, Pawn Shoppe Heart, their first and last for Sire Records, was released in early March, 2004. The Detroit band made famous by Jack White's fist followed up 2001's Lack of Communication with this collection of fast-paced garage punk anthems. Jason Stollsteimer produced the LP with Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads fame and received universal acclaim ranging from Drowned in Sound to SPIN magazine. "C'mon C'mon" was a pretty monster single and deservedly so, while other standouts included "No Regrets" and "Been Swank." Stollsteimer and company waited 5 [...]

[Karen Carpenter would have turned 60 years old today. We'll pause a moment. And now take a look at tonight's shows:] The sold-out Magnetic Fields show with Mark Eitzel at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre is the ottest ticket in town — unless you're a George Thorogood fan, which means you're heading to the House of Blues. ... The Hounds Below [ listen ], the new band from the Von Bondies' Jason Stollsteimer, joins Miranda Lee Richards and Rachel Dean [...]

The ink is hardly dry on the Von Bondies' release for Majordomo Records last year, "Love, Hate and Then There's You," and now frontman Jason Stollsteimer is on his way to town with a new band, the Hounds Below . The quartet, which includes guitarist Ben Collins, bassist Molly Jean Schoen and and drummer Ben Luckett, delves into the dusty cupboards of pop history for inspiration, with surprising results. "She's Alchemy" and "Two Step" are more Buddy Holly than the Velvet Underground, and "Crawling Back to You" is a croon right out of a sock hop. The [...]

Jason Stollsteimer, the frontman to Detroit-based band the Von Bondies, not to mention former Jack White collaborator/ bloodied-up foe , has taken a (presumed) break from the band that brought him into the limelight, and formed The Hounds Below , a new Roy-Orbison-meets-garage-rock act that hopes to make a big splash at this year's SXSW festival in Austin, TX. Jim Diamond, one of the best rock music engineers in America, and another Detroit native with a troubled Jack White history , has recorded the debut Hounds Below 7", as well as other future recordings [...]

![[Listen] – #MusicMonday – 20 Songs Of The Week](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2369856_lg.jpg)
If you're unaware of what Music Monday is, it's a Twitter recommendation system where users of Twitter share their favourite music, artists, genres, etc in order to not only find new music themselves but help others find new music too. Using the hashtag (#) followed by "MusicMonday" you can easily find new music posted by the thousands of people making recommendations each week. Every #MusicMonday I'll upload a playlist of 20 songs that I've been listening to (new and old) over the past week and hopefully you'll enjoy some of them. Want [...]
Much, much more than just Jack White's punch bag, and probably less irritating by a country mile. 2004 saw the release of The Von Bondies' Pawn Shoppe Heart . While I'm sure the band don't welcome comparisons with The White Stripes, it seems unfair they were still looking to break through at SXSW two years ago, from whence this version of Been Swank comes: [Part of Decade Null: 2004 ]
