Savage Furs Thrones of Young Ice Savage Furs Satyricon Former Vancouver resident Jack Duckworth ( A Luna Red , Radio Berlin ) continues to pursue his idiosyncratic musical vision, this time across the Atlantic in his adopted home of London. Consistently one of the most talented musicians I've had the pleasure of knowing, Jack in this [...]

Our next series of q and also a comes from the duo of James and Brett from experimental gameboyDS noise outfit Endless Endless Endless . q: What is the last song you (really) heard? j: I have been going through a big Arvo Pärt phase right now and I'm loving his stuff, the only problem is the huge changes in decibels don't work so well when i am on the train. I like the music to be louder then the talking of other people so when the [...]

"Hey, Heavy D, what you got for me today? Got some heavy boulders? Shake 'em and they sound like dice?" That was the chant Jimmy Oliver heard when he walked down South Washington Street in Lansing, Michigan. Heavy D was his nickname, after the fat rapper whose girth Jimmy shares. And the heavy boulders? Those were the rocks of crack riding in Jimmy's jeans. A few years ago, Jimmy was a rich young drug dealer who could blow $12,000 over a weekend -- partying with prostitutes and buying big dinners for a dozen of the false friends his money bought. [...]
Featuring members of Isis, the VSS, Angel Hair, and Halifax Pier, it's baffling as to why Red Sparowes isn't a more widely acknowledged post-rock supergroup. The LA quartet's last major release was 2006's Every Red Heart Shines Toward the Red Sun , and the band is releasing an EP to stay in the minds of their fans and tease toward their next album. The name of this 3-track, 18-minute pre-album endeavor: Aphorisms . And with song titles like "The Fear Is Excruciating, But Therein Lies the Answer," undisputed adages seem to be the central [...]

It never seemed intentional, but the VSS were a gleaming beacon of hope to the dyed black haired masses, the white belters, the spock rockers, and any restless hipster kid who felt out of place in the cartoon uniformity of punk music or the lazy slack predictability of indie rock. Fronted by Sonny Kay who, along with MacKaye and Biafra, was a culture changing lead singer whose influence wasn't just limited to the stage, his label (GSL) was a longtime frontrunner of the independent scene before shutting down last yearthe band took a page from the Gravity [...]

I had a request for some VSS, so this song will make at least one person very happy. The VSS were one of the first "hardcore" bands that I saw that used a keyboard which, unlike a lot of the bands I've seen lately, was pretty innovative. The other thing that made them stand out was that they brought their own light show on tour. This song was recorded live in Harrisburgh, VA in 1997 during what I think was their one and only full US tour. Also, make sure to check out Post Punk Junk for [...]
