'Is Walkabout only about what it seems to be about? Is it a parable about noble savages and the crushed spirits of city dwellers? That's what the film's surface seems to suggest, but I think it's also about something deeper and more elusive: The mystery of communication. It ends with lives that are destroyed, in one way or another, because two people could not invent a way to make their needs and dreams clear.' -Roger Ebert, April 13, 1997 ( Full article )
The Walkabouts have been on my list of bands to follow ever since I heard their great album " Satisfied mind ". They really blew me off my socks with that, and though they have sounded quite differently from time to time, I have kept a liking for this underestimated band. One of their greatest songs to me is "The light will stay on" from their 1996 album " Devil's road ". [...]
he festive atmosphere of The High Dive seems like a wonderful place to reencounter the superb songwriting skills of The Walkabouts, under their pseudonym for this night. And now I realize that they're probably headlining, after Seeing Blind and the Randy Hicks Band, which means I can probably see Redwood Plan first and then head like hell over to Fremont to catch Drunken Soundtracks! read more

Hey, it's Evan. It's Monday and I've been at work all day, slaving away in an attempt to get all our 45s alphabetized in the great push to get them out for our customers as soon as possible. I spoke briefly with our store's newest favorite customer, a young man who used to work for Matador and grew up about five miles from me back in New Jersey. He's been slowly selling off his record collection to us and it contained some cool gems. Not more than an hour after he left, another longtime customer came in and we chatted [...]

Once again, I haven't had much time to prepare something for today's Flashback Friday . So I decided to crawl through archive.org and bring you some live performances from artists I discovered during the last few years. If you enjoy what you here, check this list for complete concerts! Angie Aparo - The American (still one of the best male voices around!) Ben [...]
I generally try to make it a rule to now disparage something just for the sake of disparaging it [notable exception: John McCain's presidential campaign]. But last week I watched a movie called On the Beach [made in 1959] and on the surface the description of the movie sounds intriguing. The film is set a few months after a nuclear apocalypse between the U.S. and the Soviet Union and follows the story of a nuclear submarine [captained by Gregory Peck] that survived the attack and is now stationed in [...]
It's the first Monday of the month, and that means it's time for another full album covered. Last month's Nevermind post was probably the most popular one I've done, so here's to hoping this keeps the momentum. This isn't one of Young's most famous albums, but it's my favorite. It's got the country groove, but with more balls than on Harvest . Plus, some of the songs are just badass. So here we go... Jeff Tweedy - Walk On [...]

No Doctors "Rumble Ring" (MP3) "AAO" (MP3) These gents kicked off proceedings years ago as wide-eyed Minnesota noise scene teens, and while staking their turf firmly and quickly, admittedly didn't do much at first to move my head around. Yet, as time went on and shifts were made to Chicago and eventually San Francisco, members picked up here and there and unexpected influences started to stick to the ribs of their No Wave skeletons. Lo and behold, there was then an embrace of actual rock tradition, quite an about-face for any band starting its journey [...]

as in, w.ho w.ould j.esus d.o for a... Walkabouts "Fuck Your Fear" (albert poo holes on point)

On the Beach is a song by Neil Young from the record of the same name which is amazingly covered by Chris and Carla and The Walkabouts . There are actually 2 live versions of this song that exist. As I do not know which to pick, you'll get the two (my christmas gift :) ). The first, electric, live in studio, done by The Walkabouts that can be found on the Death Valley Days compilation. I recall excaly the first time I heard this song, on an Uncut CD. It made me discover the Walkabouts and I [...]
