Photo by Thomas Midgley By Hayley Scott May 08, 2013 Live At Leeds has grown in both stature and scope since its inception in 2007, into a musical metropolis that has steadily acquired a reputation as one of the best city festivals in the UK. First and foremost, Live At Leeds has always been a catalyst for exposing local, relatively unexplored talent whom tend to be the earlier acts to kick off proceedings. Leeds College of Music [...]

Instead of keeping us at arm's length with a cool reserve, The Walkmen invite us in for a warm embrace in their most personal, most commerical, most accomplished record yet. I think this is the album I'd hoped U2 might have made after The Joshua Tree . "Song for Leigh" just crushes... Heaven indeed. The Walkmen - "Song for Leigh" (from Heaven )

All photos and text by Alex Crick If I could choose a single children’s book to describe this year’s Treefort Music Festival , it would be The Little Engine That Could . After the resounding success of the inaugural Treefort Festival last year, the organizers truly did listen to all of the feedback and incorporated it to make this year’s festival bigger and better than before. On the top of the improvement list was the addition of a new venue The El Korah. By day, the Shrine [...]

>> While its counterpart in Oregon continues to be a hotbed of indie rock (more on that below), Portland, Maine has also been producing a steady stream of quality acts and recordings. In just the past year that city's Coke Weed and Endless Jags have released a tremendous record and EP respectively, and this Tuesday veteran indie quartet Brenda returns with a long-awaited sophomore record titled Fix Your Eyes . The 10-song collection echoes somewhat the aforementioned Endless Jags EP, as the two bands share some members and, likely [...]

Welcome back to the Friday Fives, where I add some random shit from the internet to another page on the internet, and you get to chip in in the comments section with yet more random shit. Welcome to Friday's Random Shit-O-Rama. Tomorrow is BAD FUN, remember, with Magic Eye , Fur Hood and Peter playing at Henry's Cellar Bar. We've just uploaded a new Magic Eye video , actually, from the Beer vs. Records/Split 123 sessions. It's only a fiver in and doors are at half seven, so please go along and keep Ian [...]
It's all gone a bit 2001 this month, with the return of The Strokes and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. As we were listening to Mosquito yesterday, we got to wondering about some of the less heralded bands from the garage and post-punk revivals that brought a whole heap of hype to NYC around the turn of the millennium. Some of the bands from that scene are still around and doing well, of course — Interpol spring to mind immediately — but the others... Well, we've put on our deerstalkers and done some digging. [...]

By Rob Aldam & Cat Schaupp March 26, 2013 Live At Leeds began back in 2007 in order to celebrate the city’s 800th birthday, but has now morphed into a much bigger event that now sprawls itself over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend. Taking place this year from the 3rd to the 6th of May, the ethos of the festival is to celebrate the best in music that Leeds has to offer, alongside featuring more established international acts. The main event takes [...]

Light Heat is led by Quentin Stoltzfus, formerly of Mazarin, who's last release was 20052s We're Already There . Light Heat will release their self-titled debut LP on June 25, 2013 via Ribbon Music. We're Already There seems like the kind of album that could have been monumental in 2000s indie rock, but somehow it's a little lost in the shuffle. Quentin Stolzfus has been busy with other things for a bit, but Light Heat's debut marks his return to "main guy" status. The band he put together features most of The Walkmen, who did great justice [...]
I never got around to mentioning, but for anyone who looks at my mixes over at 8tracks , I finally got around to a "Best Of 20123 mix and put it up there, instead of the Opentape thing I had been doing for the last few years that I doubt anyone ever used. Here's the tracklist for 2012 : 01. Moses Gold - Powder and Blood 02. Grimes - Oblivion 03. Serengeti feat. Yoni Wolf - Geti Life 04. Sean Born - Pour Out Liquor 05. Divine Fits [...]

In honor of Josh Ritter ’s lovely yet heartwrenching new album , inspired by the tragic disintegration of his marriage, I’ve compiled a mix of some of my favorite breakup songs. To keep this at a reasonable number, I’ve limited it to songs from the last 15 years (apologies to Bob Dylan , Nilsson , Sam Cooke , Love , and The Cure , among others). Click here to download the mix / listen on Spotify . 01. Stars - Your Ex-Lover Is Dead [...]
