Mega post number three! Are you ready? … Peopling // Peopling EP The music of Peopling is a jarring swan dive that sends the listener headlong into a world of jagged lines and sharp electronic noise. Gears squeak and crank and the vocals are trickled down through a filter of metallic fuzz. Primal screams crack through the atmosphere with the electric intensity of a bolt of lightning. Although this wasteland is littered with sharp metal and rusted hinges, there is something truly [...]

Having previously posted on a couple of James Hicken's offerings under his wallscenery demos moniker, and hearing his latest release half asleep. half awake. , I have to wonder why I haven't seen his stuff around the ol' interwebs more. I have to wonder if it's due at all to the connotations that the "demo" in the name might have associated with it? Not sure, but even though it seems perfectly suited for the experimental nature of his songs, I can speak from a meager bit of experience and say that [...]

In 2009, wallscenery demos, the project from Toronto-born James Hicken, really surprised me. It was a quick grower, blossoming into one of my favorite albums of that year. On May 3 he returns with his third full length album from the 'group', Half Asleep. Half Awake. Musically, there hasn't been much change in sound between albums. The opener, "gotta watch out for a year", lets you know right

Between the two of us here at your favorite kung fu dude-mascotted music blog, I'd have to say I'm really not the guy you go to for hot new indie music trends. The Ack is certainly the guy to go to for that kind of thing, as he manages to do a rather decent job keeping his incredibly white fingers on the pulse of those things. I'm more the guy to go to when you're wondering which Chubb Rock album was the best (most people will tell you it's The One , but I'll always be partial [...]

wallscenery demos is the brainchild of transplanted Toronto musician James Hicken. While the forthcoming album from the project, check this!, doesn't yet have a firm release date, I just couldn't sit on this one any longer. What wallscenery demos has come up with is a unique hybrid in the indie rock world. Hicken combines lo-fi slacker rock with a healthy heaping of studio effects. That makes a

wallscenery demos is another band that popped into our electronic mail unannounced. (We're assuming they've got some sort of e.e. cummings thing going on, as all of the contact we've had with the band and their new record has been capital letter free. We're going to accede to what we perceive as their wish and roll without caps when we refer to the band, even though we find it just a touch twee.) Frontman James Hicken passed along a link to the website and let us know that they had new material on the horizon. It's one of [...]

I've been in a bit of a good old fashioned power pop kick lately and The Eatons from Scarborough are exactly the type of band you're supposed to put on when you're in one of those moods. I use the descriptive term 'pop' pretty frequently these days, which is odd since I'm not even sure if use it in the right context. Just so you know, when I use it, I'm usually referring to an artist or song that makes good use of catchy hooks and memorable melodies. I am not referring to 'pop' as the short form [...]

I think it's quite obvious that this years NXNE festival has completely zonked me, making it difficult to throw words up on this blog that even slightly resembles anything literate, but hecks if I don't put forth an effort here today. Now you may be wondering: why am I putting up the monthly 'sup? post for July when it's only the 24th of June? Well this is because I'm off to New York tomorrow night and I won't be back till next week and by then it's going to be the 30th, and I don't know [...]

The Wallscenery Demos is the name James Hicken has given to a collection of songs he produced, performed, recorded, and released himself this past March. James has played in bands like the Little Pilgrims and Battery Point since relocating to Toronto from Charlottetown in 2000. He leaned on some of the friends he made during his time in those bands to make these songs, getting contributions from members of the Northwest Division and Michael "Rosie" Rosenthal (Supergarage, Sunparlour players, Hugh & Rosie, Parkdale Revolutionary Orchestra). That being said, there's such continuity among the songs that it's obvious [...]
Another gem from the submissions page has landed in the form of some really nice relaxing music. Maybe it's that summer is upon us and I'm really digging the evening air with the Wallscenery's demo tracks wafting in with it. Their music is relaxed and chill. They kind of remind me of plus or minus. [...]
