The Wannadies - You & Me Song [...]

Life at the moment is hectic for Pearl and the Puppets frontwoman, Katie Sutherland, as her career has seemed to explode in recent months after a change of management. She is currently recording her debut album, and is gigging across the UK to promote it and we at Crack in the Road managed to catch her before her performance in Dundee headlining Abertay University's freshers week. As usual, the Dundee crowd was sub-par (see my other reviews in Dundee, its all the same) which is miles away from the crowds she has performed in front of [...]

After self-pity comes bitterness; here are three prime musical examples, especially recommended if you like your Swedes bitter. And trust me, if you've ever been dumped (as I'm sure most of us will have at one time or another) you'll not hear a more staisfying, or indeed better, bitter song all year than Lucky You . Let the catharsis commence. The Wannadies - Lucky You mp3 Hello Saferide - Last Bitter Song mp3 The Bear Quartet - What's Your Virtue? mp3

There's been a conspicuous lack of a) Swedish acts and b) quirky cover versions featured on this blog recently. So here are some Swedish acts performing quirky cover versions. Now I can't say fairer than that. (Damned speech impediment!) The featured songs were originally made famous by: Depeche Mode, Bonnie Tyler and Lady Saw. Oh alright, so I've never heard of that last one either. But if you've ever wondered what an all-female a cappella choir tackling a Jamaican dancehall number would sound like (and I'd be astonished if you hadn't, frankly), here's your chance to find [...]
I'm not a fan of end-of-year lists or end-of-decade lists or, really, any lists in general. However, my contract with the Music Blogger's Union stipulates that I'm required to go through the same motions that every other music blogger goes through at this time of year. So yeah, there's gonna be an album of the year post and an album of the decade post and maybe a song of the year post and all that other garbage. It might be spread out over a couple days or I might just lump it all into one big post just to get [...]

Swedish indie classic ahoy! It's The Wannadies' 1990 gem My Home Town ... And here's Min Hemstad , a Swedish language cover of the very same song from Annika 'Hello Saferide' Norlin's other project Säkert (which, thanks to having known and liked the Wannadies' version for years, now becomes the first Säkert song I've ever understood the lyrics to!) The Wannadies - My Home Town mp3 The Säkert version of the song can be found on the new Razzia Records [...]

One of my favourite bands that I dont feature too often round here are The Wannadies , a fabulous pop outfit who hailed from Skelleftea , a small town in northern Sweden. Formed in 1988, they sadly announced their break-up earlier this year (some six years after they last released any material), but looking on the bright side, we have been left behind a small but damn near perfect back catalogue of seven studio albums. But where the band [...]

It's been an extremely long week (so long, in fact, that it became two weeks), and I'm still feeling a little crabby because I came down with a cold last weekend in the midst of a heatwave in a house with no air conditioning. A few days later, I ended up with some extremely vomitous backpain (if this is me at 26, I may as well call it quits at 30). I'm also just feeling bogged down with work, so I'm going to do a cheer up mix. Frankly, I despise people who tell me to cheer up or smile [...]

The Wannadies - Someone Somewhere The Opening Acts

Both of the songs for today's chapter of my 1000 Minutes project were featured on soundtracks in the late nineties, and are the only exposure I've had to the artists. While that may be a poor reflection on me as a music lover, it's really more of a reflection on the amount of money I had in 1996 and 1998, when I was 17/19 – which is to say, not much at all. 45. Artery Music Genre: Country / Indie / Folk From: Iceland The Devil's inbox is bombarded each day with emails from young bands, starving artists, PR companies, record labels, Nigerians with an offer that sounds too good to be true and companies who can apparently guarantee an erection that lasts all night! But amongst the detritus of the information super highway there's usually one jewel that makes it all worthwhile. Icelandic musical collective (bands [...]

A bar in Spain has come up with an unusual marketing plan for these recessionary times. Customers at the Casa Pocho bar in Cullera, southern Spain, are encouraged to come in for a drink and to insult the staff while they're at it. Free drinks will be given to patrons who can come up with novel or humorous ways of verbally abusing the bar staff. To be frank, I experience this every time I go to The Abbey Bar in Galbally , Co Limerick. The customers are often quite explicit and forthright in their criticisms and demands [...]

Par Lagerkvist Låt min skugga försvinna i din. Let my shadow disappear into yours. Let me lose myself under the tall trees, that themselves lose their crowns in the twilight, surrendering themselves to the sky and the night. mp3 : The Wannadies - The Beast Cures The Lover Cheers adam x TODAY'S [...]

I suspect you'd assumed it had already happened, but it turns out that The Wannadies hadn't actually split up before today. Today they did, though . It perhaps says a lot about how far the tide of fashion had swept by them that the news was broken exclusively by, erm, Teletext.
