photos by Jim Bennett Philadelphia band The War on Drugs was formed in 2005 by Adam Granduciel and Kurt Vile. Vile, of course, has pursued a successful solo career, but The War On Drugs have continued churning out soulful, road-weary Americana, led by Granduciel moaning vocals, a spot-on rhythm section, a delicate, organic guitar lines. 20112s acclaimed Slave Ambient is the band's first full-length release since 20082s Wagonwheel Blues , and with a reputation for moving live performances, we couldn't be happier to have them playing at Mellow Johnny's. Austin Texas - Live Music Capital of the World Strolling through Austin on day two of our visit, we realized that South by Southwest is something of a Woodstock for the 21st century, in the sense that it is a cultural event that perfectly encapsulates its era. Whereas Woodstock represented a time of love and unity and drugs, "South By" (as the locals call it) represents a time of apps and diversity and stuff. Moreover, it represents an era of supreme accessibility, both spatial and temporal: bands from all over the globe mining sounds from every [...]

The War On Drugs – Dublin
Hot on the heels of last Sunday's visit by fellow traveller Kurt Vile to the same venue, Adam Granduciel's The War on Drugs roll into town. First of all, it has to be said: what a great name for a band. Is that The War on Drugs, or The War on Drugs? The one minute Hollywood pitch for this band would doubtless go: 'It's Bob Dylan fronting the Velvet Underground', a tracing of influences amply evidenced by the drawled lyrical nods to the Little White Wonder 's songbook of 'thousand miles behind' to 'One Too Many Mornings' [...]
Video Picks / 02.28.2012
So we typically toss a video onto a post when highlighting a new band or a show preview or something and let you draw your own conclusion about it. Sometimes we throw a change-up... strike that - let's call it a round up. Most of these videos are of bands we have previously talked about here on Draw Us Lines, so we won't be telling you much about those bands themselves, just some musings that really aren't worth a damn. If a picture is worth 1000 words, then a video must be worth a million. Hold on to your hats! [...]
The War on Drugs
A few years back I took a roadtrip across the United States. I used to think I'd get Ry Cooder in to score the resulting footage but after tonight I'm thinking Adam Granduciel would be the better choice. His particular brand of neo-Americana is perfect for the leftover, nostalgic images of being on the road. Dusty highways, wild abandon and faded blue jeans coalesce perfectly with his laconic drawl, buzzing guitar solos and drifting harmonica lines. The War on Drugs open their set with 'Best Night' and [...]
KURT VILE, THE WAR ON DRUGS, REAL ESTATE [MONDAY THREESOME]
This installment will examine a trio of artists who have all worked together in the past and all released exemplary records in 2011, each rooted in a similar sonic landscape. All three albums relied heavily on a consistent vibe of textural, layered, and interlocking guitar melodies, often soaked in a smoky, reverb-laden haze. I've always been drawn to records that sound cohesive and timeless - this threesome nailed that concept. Jesus Fever - Kurt Vile // Buy Kurt Vile [...]
