If you've been following Dead Flowers for any amount of time, you know that I don't do "quirky". So you're going to read about Radiohead, not Vampire Weekend; DJ Shadow, not Girl Talk. The Wave Pictures, a band from London, are about as quirky as you can get. And they're lo-fi boot, another no-no as far as I'm concerned. But I have to tell you, I love this record, quirks and all. Affecting

Initially, I got hooked into The Wave Pictures' Instant Coffee Bab y by the bands' laid back 50s rock n roll sound, awesome guitar solos, and the ever so enjoyable handclaps; however, it did not take long for me to realise that the best part about the album is its amusing and captivating lyrics. Let me give you a little sample: I Love You Like A Madman "If I made it through Christmas without smoking till your parents went to bed, if you made it through too without sticking your nail scissors in my neck, [...]

"If I made it through Christmas without smoking till your parents went to bed, if you made it through too without sticking your nailseses in my neck..." Following up right on the heels of a post about a band no more is a London trio that's thankfully, still very much alive. The Wave Pictures have been kicking good and well since 1998, and despite that rather contemporary debut, there's quite a vintage sound in all their makings. Putting their overall sound aside, their actual recordings are [...]

INDIETRACKS FESTIVAL, 26th-27th July 2008, Midlands Railway Butterley (Part Two - Sunday!) Sunday brought with it the meat and bones of the festival, with incredible acts spilling out from every stage...at least once the technical difficulties on the outdoor stage were fixed. Indeed these technical difficulties ended up improving the festival no end; set times were rearranged, and almost every band I actually wanted to see was relocated to the superior outdoor stage. The first [...]

I wake up with the thunder of your typewriter I Wave Pictures battono a ragione il ferro finché è caldo e, dopo il loro notevolissimo esordio Instant Coffee Baby , daranno alle stampe il prossimo 4 agosto un nuovo ep con cinque canzoni: Just Like a Drummer , già contenuta nell'album, più quattro inediti che vedono anche la collaborazione di Rebecca degli Slow Club e Lisa Li Lund . >>>(mp3): The Wave Pictures - Just [...]

Moshi Moshi Records do indeed seem to be Record Label du Jour in the UK at the moment, which is no bad thing. This month's Welcome to Our TV Show is a Moshi Moshi special, with Slow Club, Hot Club de Paris and the superlative Wave Pictures turning up to play some stuff and do [...]
If it's another month, it's surely time for another Welcome to our TV Show . This month Jeremy and Fay have gone for a corporate tie-in and given us a label showcase. Happily it's the ever-ace Moshi Moshi records that's getting the WTOTS big-up and we've got three of their best – The Wave Pictures , Hot Club de Paris and Slow Club playing in the Warmsley-Buzzard lounge. I need say no more about The Wave Pictures, because they're already big DG favourites and I've said plenty already. Suffice to [...]

Image: New York Times/Westminster Dog Show Leave That Scene Behind - The Wave Pictures It's not a matter of "getting past it." You either hate Dave Tattersall's voice, or you hate it less. It's whiny and nasal and so maddeningly atonal you want to reach through the speakers and grab Tattersall by the shoulders and shake him til his ears fall off (they're not doing him any good anyway). So why do I crush so [...]
Am I going to get lynched if I say that I found this album a little disappointing? I love the Wave Pictures, and I haven't seen this stuff live yet, so maybe I should hold fire a little, but the songwriting on this record is a bit thin in places, I find. I mean this [...]

Broken Social Scene – Backyards Emily Haines has one of the finest voices of this decade. This is surely evident on "Backyards," one of Broken Social Scene's best songs. The song connects surrealism, infinity, and everything beautiful. Even though the track drags on for an extra two minutes, this is perfection. The Dodos – Undeclared The Dodos delicately combine folk and pop on "Undeclared." I don't know what to say about this song. It's short, simple, and [...]

The Wave Pictures - Holding Hands (Moshi Moshi) Yes Yes I know The Wave Pictures were in last weeks Record Box but that was a track from the album and this is the B side of the fantastic new single "I Love You Like A Madman". mp3: The Wave Pictures - Holding Hands
You may have noticed if you read any uk blogs, or music sites that they're swooning like 50's housewives about the Wave Pictures. It seems I can't open up a web browser without stumbling onto some article or other about this band. It's probably only a matter of time until we Americans start up with [...]

(more...)

Bon Iver - "Blindsided" . I was up by the lake, this weekend. I listened to this song in the dark. I thought, then, of a story to write about it. I can't remember the story now, just its gleams. Its gleams were blue, green, and gold. The song's central lyric is: because blinded / I was blindsided. These are two events: the blinding, and the blindsiding. Justin Vernon lost his sight, and then something knocked him over. First the gold, then the blue and green. (First the kiss, and then the dream.) [ buy ] [...]
Half Man Half Biscuit - Blue Badge Abuser (Probe Plus) Taken from the new album "CSI Ambleside". Buy Here Bardot Pond - A Tune (Three Lobed Recordings) Taken from the new mini album thingy "Batholith" which is apparently just a small compilation of stuff they just had lying around. There are only six tracks on here but every one's a winner. The Wedding Present - Boo Boo (Pinnacle) Another track from the new album "El Ray". Out 26th April. [...]

Here's yet another post on The Wave Pictures . It's needed for three main reasons: 1. I was on Blog Fresh Radio last week, talking ineloquently about the band. You can hear it here (I'm 16.20 minutes in) including a play of You Love Me Like a Madman . In the interview, Bill from Blog Fresh managed a comparison that I'd been struggling to get to describe WP. The Smiths meets Hefner, he said. That'll do nicely I thought. 2. Their new album [...]
