Happy Valentines Day. For those of you celebrating the "holiday" without any special someone this year - this post is for you (and coincidentally, me as well). So, grab that bottle of whiskey you've been saving for an emergency, plug in your headphones and drink until you don't miss her (or him) anymore. Here's a [...]
It's a beautiful and sunny (but cold) Saturday morning here in Chicagoland and things are generally great. I've got hot coffee, fresh (homemade) blueberry Belgian waffles, and a mimosa. I'm done with school next week and things at work are looking way up. My 15 month old daughter has a vocabulary of over 40 words and a feisty little personality. She is (however) the sweetest child ever. EVER! Here is a little Saturday morning playlist courtesy of my wife's iPod (but tweaked by me a little). Enjoy your morning and I'll do the same. [...]
Although they haven't released an album in over 3 years, the band who gave this blog its name does have some new material. I recently obtained a recording of The Weakerthans playing in Heidelberg, Germany in August on their most recent tour. I've posted two new songs here; "Sun in an Empty Room" and "Night Windows." Both are great tunes, and the sound quality is excellent. MP3: Sun in an Empty Room (Live) MP3: Night Windows (Live) POSTED BY: Chris 6:49PM

Who doesn't love Antarctica? I mean, it's a continent, but it's uninhabited. It's on a pole. They've got penguins. It's home to the Antarctic Treaty System , the first arms control treaty of the Cold War, which required that it be left free of military incursions, to remain a home for scientific exploration and inquiry. And then there's the fantastic " Scott of the Antarctic " sketch by Monty Python. I mean, seriously. Movies of Antarctica - Stars of Track and Field I like movies. [...]

Its been awhile since these guys from Winnipeg, Manitoba have produced an album, but their 2003 effort Reconstruction Site contains brilliant song writing. The album has an 80s REMish feel to it, somewhat crossing over into the domain of The Tragically Hip. Pitchfork gave a rather brutal review of the album which can be read here . However, more accurate reviews from listeners can be obtained from Emusic . These are some terrific downloadable MP3s: Last Last One MP3 [...]

It's already a new week? One thing that flew past me in the craziness of last week was a mention of the new Contrast Podcast that I contributed to, where a bunch of us bloggers get together to virtually DJ a radio show. The theme last week was " Who? " and I finally contributed a most excellent Pearl Jam track ("Who You Are"). I held out on the PJ for a while but hey, what do you expect? This upcoming week Tim will be putting together Contrast Podcast [...]

Somehow, it's been five years since I last saw The Weakerthans live. No excuse, they've been through town lots of times. I've just never gone. Which is weird, since I really do like them and think John K Samson is one of the top songwriters this country has to offer right now - the fact that his band also rocks out is gravy. But as their headlining show at the "From The Peg" festival at Harbourfront (celebrating the city of Winnipeg) showed, it has been far far too long. Fittingly, Samson [...]
I decided to take a somewhat different approach to this theme. See, I've taken more road trips in my life than I can count on all my fingers and toes combined; and I always make mixes for them because I am the type of person that needs to have a perfect soundtrack for everything. I have so many favorite road trip songs that it would be way too hard to narrow them down. Instead, I decided to give you all the (partial) soundtrack to one of the more recent road trips I went on - ten days [...]
In November Sarah Harmer and the Weakerthans peformed were brought together in concert by the CBC. I was able to get most of the show in a rebroadcast but they cut out a few amazing tracks. I put out a plea looking for the rest and a recent rebroadcast of the original (complete) show was recorded by b(oot)log reader Craig, who was kind enough to send me the tracks to share with you all. So Craig, you are hearby awarded the "b(oot)log order of merit for you alertness and generosity." You are my new personal hero. Thanks very [...]
