For Harley Prechtel-Cortez, Ryan Kirkpatrick, Diego Guerrero, and Calvin J. Love — the guys Los Angeles knew as Red Cortez — it was a matter of "recalibrating our ears." That's how Kirkpatrick described the quartet moving on and becoming Just an Anima l, whose music bears only a faint resemblance to the amped-up rock-and-blues Red Cortez, a band that as recently as February did a residency at the Satellite. Few groups who carved out a niche in the L.A. scene in recent years tried as hard as Red Cortez, who started out as the Weather Underground, and [...]

Recently I had the privilege to watch an Academy Award Nominated documentary called The Weather Underground and found it to be an insightful and inspiring look into the revolutionist ideals of the 60's and early 70's. I watched with rapt attention as these young people - college students, hippies, and working class men and women alike - fleshed out a national response to not only the horrible war that was going on in Vietnam, but also various other issues of Civil Rights. I pondered - where is that sense of urgency now? The world is equally corrupt now [...]

Last year, all seemed to be going very well for The Weather Underground. With a slew of successful support dates for the likes of Matt Costa, Delta Spirit, and Constantines, a Daytrotter session , and topped off with an appearance at Bonnaroo - all the momentum was heading in the right direction. Then sometime late summer 2008, guitarist Shoichi Bagley left the band and The Weather Underground ceased to exist. Not to be deterred however, after a quick regrouping, Red Cortez was born. Fans [...]

Red Cortez is a re-branded band formerly known as Weather Underground out of California. They deliver songs with a varying blend of influences ranging from rock, soul, punk and blues. You can hear all of these influences on "All the Difference" and "World at Rest." No word on when an album might be released, but stay tuned. Red Cortez are definitely worth keeping on your radar. In May we featured up and coming act The Weather Underground as one of our Blips artists to watch . The L.A. quartet had quite a six-month stretch - a cross country tour, stops at major music festivals including Bonnaroo and High Sierra, as well as holding down the opening slot for a diverse group of acts like Matt Costa, Dead Confederate and the Constantines. [Photo By: Sonia Onate] The group's name has been in the news quite frequently as of late thanks to Barack [...]

(Photo by Josh Nelson) What do you get when you mix a cool band of four from the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles with a cool interviewer, a big couch, and a very people-friendly dog? Why a fun interview between myself and Harley Prechtel-Cortez, Ryan Kirkpatrick, Diego Guerrero, and Soichi Bagley of The Weather Underground of course. However, I'm not sure that "interview" is the right word for it. I mean, ok, following their show here in Washington, DC I asked them questions about their band and they [...]

(Photo by Andy Tennille ) The Weather Underground is a great 4-piece band out of the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles. When I saw them for the first time here in DC back in June, I described them as follows: The Weather Underground plays rock music that is tinged with the influences of folk, soul, punk, gospel, and Latin, the latter making sense as lead singer/songwriter/rhythm guitarist Harley Prechtel-Cortez is very tied to his Guatemalan heritage (more on that later). But I'm not talking Gipsy Kings imitators [...]
Live Daily has this nice little section called Live Daily Sessions where bands come and play a couple of acoustic numbers. Recent bands include Langhorne Slim , Le Switch , and a favorite around Between Love and Like, The Weather Underground , where they performed "All Ye People" and "Neal Cassady," both off their newest EP, Bird in the Hand . Though it's been over five years since they've released their last original LP, Massive Attack looks to be in the final stages of preparation for their new album Weather Underground. Last week, I posted the BBC recording of a portion of Massive Attack's set from Glastonbury. However, the BBC only recorded about a half an hour of the set and thanks to Deaf Indie Elephants, we have nearly an hour of extra audio from the performance and yes, it contains eight new Massive Attack tracks, possibly from the forthcoming album. As with many similar groups, some bands [...]

Long before the muxtape , there was "A Baker's Dozen". And it's back. Volume 12. Enjoy. 01 - Lykke Li - " Dance Dance Dance ". " When I'm shaking my hips, look for the swing, the words are written in the air... ". My #2 favorite song of the past month (with #3 here and #1 coming up). [...]
(Click on any photo to enlarge) I assume a rock show on a rainy Monday night is tough to get a huge crowd at most places, but in Washington, DC, it's REALLY hard. If you're a smaller band from another coast who is also playing second on a bill of three on a rainy Monday in DC, you might very well be playing to a handful of folks and the venue staff for your set. This is, unfortunately, what happened for The Weather Underground 's show last Monday at the Rock and [...]

Ryan Kirkpatrick and Harley Prechtel-Cortez of The Weather Underground We always arrive early enough at shows that frequently we're the first ones in line at the door. This is partly because we are obsessively punctual but also because we really like to see the opening bands, and we have discovered several we like a lot that way. That was the case last Thursday at the Echo with L.A.-based The Weather Underground , who opened for the French Kicks . Main guy Harley Prechtel-Cortez (vocals, guitar, keys) [...]

The Weather Underground (Los Angeles, CA). All Photos by Benjamin Hoste My good buddy Benjamin Hoste ventured out this past Tuesday to see The Weather Underground with Aushua , Karin Tatoyan , and Oliver Future at The Troubadour. The local act has been getting a lot of good press lately and will be hitting the road with The French Kicks next month as well as playing [...]

Sadly, The Wheel's Still In Spin will not be going to SXSW this year. But we can still dream. Here is a list of the bands that we would most like to see at SXSW for Wed, March 12, 2008 . There are links to each artist's band page at SXSW.com with a short quote, when available, from the band's bio that appears on that page. 5PM - [...]

After I saw Public Enemy in its top 8 MySpace friends, I approached The Weather Underground about contributing a post for I Used to Love H.E.R., a series in which artists/bloggers/writers discuss their most essential or favorite hip-hop albums ( read intro ). The four guys – Ryan, Shoichi, Harley and Diego – put together a mix tape of sorts, each contributing entries for their favorite records. The LA band plays Saturday at Modified in Phoenix. Read about the group at the LA Times' The Guide . [...]
