2, 3, Go - The Wedding Present This is them in 1996. They are a bit of a lad's band, aren't they? Like blokey, afternoons at the pub, calling them "Weddoes", a resurgence band for those who were young in the late 802s/early 902s who've lost their youth in both appearance and ideals but not their propriety for this music. I mean, look: Look at those men! How [...]
Convertible - The Wedding Present Finally, some later era Wedding Present, which, as time would have it, has become a middle era Wedding Present. The Wedding Present: 25 years in the industry. This would be from the Cooking Vinyl era then, just before Cinerama became active. A little slower, a little softer, Jayne Lockey on backing vocals, still amazing. David Gedge has never written a bad song. Some may be better than others, some i may spend more time listening to than others, but, [...]

Very special episode of Danger Radio. We play the legendary and rarely found C86 album in it's entirety in order. Along the way we discuss the bands and what it all means to myself and my co-host Jake Ryan. This is one of about 5 albums I can point to that shaped my musical tastes and I'm proud to say that it sits at the top of that list. PLAYLIST: Velocity Girl – Primal Scream Happy Head – The Mighty Lemon Drops Pleasantly Surprised – The [...]

Athens PopFest 2010 begins tomorrow in (perhaps unsurprisingly) Athens, Georgia. Founded by Mike Turner of Happy Happy Birthday to Me Records in 2003, Athens PopFest continues this year with its strongest line-up to date. Featured bands include Mission to Burma , Apples in Stereo , Circulatory System , Go Sailor , The Wedding Present , OH-OK , and many many more. And to mark the occasion there is a 2010 Athens PopFest Compilation available for free download. In two parts, it features a massive 39 tracks in all, [...]
(photo by Izumi Kumazawa) That's right, another season gone by of free Friday shows at Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport is coming to a close this coming Friday evening, with a rousing pairing of local kids Savoire Adore and the twenty-five-years-on indie rock act Wedding Present. The Seaport Music Festival is one of [...]

This video just makes me giggle. Got a fist of pure emotion... got a head of shattered dreams.... Anything Take That related makes me think of this day in Grade 6 when my friend ran wailing up the corridor, shouting about some band called Take That breaking up. "Who's Take That?" I asked. Who, indeed. This was meant to appear in my most recent coverage post , but for some reason I overlooked it. Back For Good (Take That Cover) - The Wedding Present [...]

This week's episode of Danger Radio - the glorious Episode 70 - is different versions of songs that have been played on the previous 70 episodes. In some cases, it's the original where a cover has been played. In others, it's a cover where the original had been played. Some are unmixed originals, some are demos... Everything about Episode 70 is still different and yet the same. Welcome to bizarro world, Superman. PLAYLIST: Pavement - The Classical (Peel Session) The Apples In Stereo - Touch the Water Jim Reid - I'm [...]

Wonderswan From: Leeds, United Kingdom According to Scorpio PR & Review , the 3rd largest fully independent music e-zine online in the UK, Wonderswan's debut is little more than 'uninteresting vocals that sound simply awful over the rabble in the background'. They have no idea why Dance To The Radio (Wonderswan's) have licence Wonderswan's debut to be pressed and that there really are no positives (they) can take from it. [...]

Wedding Present swept through town doing what many bands are doing these days - performing a classic album in its entirely. I suppose some might argue that Seamonsters is their best album, but one thing is certain, no true fan of The Wedding Present is out there without Bizzaro prominently placed in their collection. At this show, Gedge and co. blew through some new songs plus a few standards before blazing through the jangle-fest that is Bizarro . I hope he put some ice on his pic hand [...]

Y'know with the endless search for the brightest new things it is easy to forgot ones roots, as in the bands that spun personal taste in a lifelong direction. The Wedding Present were instrumental in my formative years, specifically that iconic cover arted 'George Best'. I'd spotted the cassette in the hands of 2 cool girls on the bus on the way home from college and I was completely smitten. Can remember been surprised at the rough production, the fact that every song sounded the same and how the guitar player was able to pick his notes at such speed. [...]

Coincidence: There I was, working on a mini-retrospective of the Wedding Present's debut George Best (complete with sweet backing vocals by Amelia Fletcher), and into my inbox pops news of a forthcoming new album by Tender Trap (lead voice —Amelia Fletcher). "Dansette Dansette." The core twee-o ... er, trio of Fletcher, partner Rob Pursey and John Downfall is augmented by Elizabeth Darling (from Allo Darlin') on guitar and vocals and Katrina Dixon (formerly of Police Cat) on drums, and the band shows off its newly acquired muscle [...]

Toronto - One of the more unlikely covers I have found recently, one of the hardest working bands out there, The Wedding Present took the time to cover one of the greatest pop songs ever, Take That 's Back for Good. The cover sees David Gedge strip down the song, slowing the pace and then ending it with some nice electronic guitar. It's definitely a little different take on this classic. Check it out.

Having spent the week driving Loch Lomond around the country I figured that some sort of driving-themed nonsense would be in order for this week's podcast. Driving music (NOT in the Top Gear sense) tends to stick in your head, probably because when listening to it there is nothing else to do but sit and absorb the whole album. I know most musicians would probably blanche somewhat at the idea of having their work enjoyed over the thrum of wind noise, tyre noise and a grumbling engine, but a long drive is still probably one of the best [...]

Yes it's true, I am still among the living. I have been going to a ton of live shows lately, most notably the much hyped (and for good reason) band Sleigh Bells . I finally saw them last week, then again this week and they were amazing! All I could have hoped for - a hot, sweaty, in your face show, something I've definitely been missing lately. I've been pushing this band onto friends for over six months now and with the digital release of their album Treats on M.I.A.'s NEET Recordings earlier [...]

Leeds, U.K.-based indie rock darlings, The Wedding Present were formed as a quartet in 1985 after the demise of Lost Pandas. Spearheaded by the eccentric frontman and lead guitarist, David Gedge, the band released its first record George Best in 1987, a compilation of singles that paid homage to the Manchester United soccer star of the 60s and 70s. While this effort displayed the band's playful over-the-top pop personality, the following records, Bizarro and Seamonsters dug at the raw nerve. With the help of producer, Steve Albini, The Weddoes hit stride [...]

Frank Yang Whenever I see reviews of Kate Nash's just-released sophomore effort My Best Friend Is You that put forward the tracks that represent her well-documented discovery of Riot Grrl as the standouts and bemoan the number of pure pop numbers on the record, I have to wonder if the writers of said pieces actually like Kate Nash. Because as commendable as it is that she's seeking to branch out beyond her precocious piano girl image and explore her interest in louder, rawer sounds, the inescapable fact is is [...]
