► It promises to feel like a night at the movies at the Satellite, where A Winged Victory for the Sullen performs. It's a collaboration pairing Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie ( Stars of the Lid ) and pianist Dustin O'Halloran (once upon a time of the fine L.A. duo Devics ), and their ambient tunes will be abetted by the American Contemporary Music Ensemble and video projections Christina Vantzou. ► Kiev continues its residency at the Central SAPC in Santa Monica with a good lineup that includes Monte Mar, the New Limb and Facts on [...]

L.A.'s Carl Jordan, who releases music under the moniker The Western States Motel , offers another indie pop gem of a single that intertwines a bit of twang, a magnitude of synthesizers and simple but poignant melodies. However, like the rest tracks off of his new album "Freeway Freeway Riverbed," the charming intricacies of "All the Stars" never fall short of ripening into a plush story that leaves the heart a little lighter and the eardrums more than tickled. As Jordan's earnest vocals flesh out sentimental lyrics such as "If I could reach that far / I would grab [...]

Top show to consider while you keep tabs on @FooFighters for news of a surprise show by that up-and-coming little band: ► Canadian five-piece Mother Mother brings its hooky tunes to the Satellite — the Vancouver band's full-length "Eureka" is out March 15. ► Musical storyteller/humorist Todd Snider , his double-disc live album out earlier this month, headlines the El Rey Theatre. ► Susan James celebrates the release of her new album "Highways, Ghosts, Hearts & Home" with a big party at the Echo featuring, among others [...]

On his first two releases as the Western States Motel , L.A. songwriter Carl Jordan impresses as a songwriter whose four-minute snapshots feel like landscape paintings of yearning and disconnectedness. Like many a bedroom popster, Jordan can't quite live in his own pictures, but the simple melodies and plaintive narratives on "The Western States Motel" (2007) and the follow-up "Painted Birds Flying in the Orange Mirror Sun" EP allow his listeners to. The first taste of Western States' new album "Freeway Freeway Riverbed" (due in February) isn't really a country-and-western song but a paean to that music's healing power. [...]

Country music is something that most folks have a pretty good handle on. Western music, on the other hand, is a whole different beast. Lacking those country motifs that have slowly evolved over the decades, western music can't be pinned down as easily as its country cousin. Acoustic? Not necessarily. Stripped down? Nope. Rural themes? Hardly. It's one of those "I know it when I hear it" things, and as such, defining western music is hopelessly subjective. Don't believe me? Let's play a game. Try ordering these bands by their proportion of westerness (or is that westernity?): Buddy Holly, Tex [...]

Despite all the 'best of' lists, the top tens/twenties/fifties/one hundreds etc. and all the Christmas songs too, there has still been a cracking amount of new releases in December as well. So lest you missed out, here is our monthly round-up of the best tunes we've posted in December and, as always, a couple of new ones too. That's the New Year's Eve mixtape sorted at least. Download The Sweaters - Can't Stop Winnin' mp3 A syrupy, garage gem. It's upbeat and has as much soul as it does jangle and [...]

Western States Motel play an intriguing blend of country and folk with a modern twist. Try Country and Western Song from their latest full-length Freeway Freeway Riverbend , which sees a release in February 2011. The California natives show traces of classic influences ( Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash ), in an end product that perhaps falls slightly more into indie-pop territory with its clever use of synth leads and drum machines. It's a deceptively simple and straight forward tune that bounces along on a great rhythm and has quickly grown [...]

The Western States Motel provide an eclectic mix of sound in their music, with a sort of alt-folk synth style. It's different, aesthetically, but it has a familiar appeal. The vocals are very much reminiscent of acts like the Eels, or even Wilco. "Country and Western Song" has a steady rhythm, and even though it seems like their genre may not have the best mix of instruments, they pull it off because of the straightforward sound. Carl Jordan, the frontman of The Western States Motel is from Monterey, CA, and the West Coast influence is obvious (what, [...]
[Take pause this morning to Imagine on the 30th anniversary of John Lennon's death.] Top 4 places to get your midweek on: ► Three local bands finishing up the year behind strong albums — Delta Spirit ("History From Below"), Darker My Love ("Alive As You Are") and the Fling ("When the Madhouses Appear") — team up at the Music Box. The Fling recently signed to Dangerbird, which will re-release the band's DIY effort next year. (Above, an acoustic version of [...]

Carl Jordan has THAT voice. You know, the one that sounds like Gavin Rosdale after he's taken 40 No-Doz. It's that raspy yet emotionally pleasing tone you might recognize with the likes of Pete Droge or Eels, the former heavyweight champions of obscurity-laced pop. But, it's time to step aside Mr. E. The Western States Motel is here to bring oddball power pop back in a big way with their ultra catchy track "The Cliff". This song is that love lost, [...]

I am celebrating the Fourth with a photo of my beautiful state flower, the golden poppy. These are from earlier this spring, but I still have a few hanging on against the summer heat. While I picked these bands for the word "states" in their name, they are all U.S. artists, and each of these albums deserves its own review because the songs are so good. This is a beautiful album from Los Angeles' State Shirt. Give your ears a special present and listen to more of the songs. You will want [...]
