► It promises to feel like a night at the movies at the Satellite, where A Winged Victory for the Sullen performs. It's a collaboration pairing Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie ( Stars of the Lid ) and pianist Dustin O'Halloran (once upon a time of the fine L.A. duo Devics ), and their ambient tunes will be abetted by the American Contemporary Music Ensemble and video projections Christina Vantzou. ► Kiev continues its residency at the Central SAPC in Santa Monica with a good lineup that includes Monte Mar, the New Limb and Facts on [...]

L.A.'s Carl Jordan, who releases music under the moniker The Western States Motel , offers another indie pop gem of a single that intertwines a bit of twang, a magnitude of synthesizers and simple but poignant melodies. However, like the rest tracks off of his new album "Freeway Freeway Riverbed," the charming intricacies of "All the Stars" never fall short of ripening into a plush story that leaves the heart a little lighter and the eardrums more than tickled. As Jordan's earnest vocals flesh out sentimental lyrics such as "If I could reach that far / I would grab [...]

The close of a month only means the promise and potential of a new month. And it also means the start of some new residencies. Every Tuesday in November, as a part of their On The Rox local specials, the Roxy will be hosting The Western States Motel , which is the name of the project of local Carl Jordan. His latest self-released record, titled 'Freeway Freeway Riverbed', is an amalgam of country and pop that never strays too far into the extreme of either direction. He creates a sweet and simple sound that is unique, yet comforting [...]
The Western States Motel provides a pleasant acoustic indie road trip with their record Freeway Freeway Riverbed.
If Americana, alt-country or whatever you may call it is your thing, do head over to the Bird List , where thirty of the ´web´s leading aficionados of twanglike music´ picked the best albums of the year. I participated as well, but my list didn´t make much of an impact on the final outcome I guess. Oh well. Maybe I´m just not twang enough. For the record, here´s my personal top 15 of 2009, as submitted to the Bird List ´s totally cool politburo. On the whole, I [...]

I am celebrating the Fourth with a photo of my beautiful state flower, the golden poppy. These are from earlier this spring, but I still have a few hanging on against the summer heat. While I picked these bands for the word "states" in their name, they are all U.S. artists, and each of these albums deserves its own review because the songs are so good. This is a beautiful album from Los Angeles' State Shirt. Give your ears a special present and listen to more of the songs. You will want [...]

I think a bit of a dilemma is occurring. I'm tempted to call these times the resurgence of acoustic pop, though I'm obviously aware that acoustic pop has been, and will always be, near the top of the music scene. But lately (I'm talking this decade) it has delivered more than its typical share of wonderful artists rising to the top - with folks such as Sufjan, Bon Iver, and the Frightened Rabbit crew, among others of course, becoming major indie darlings. We're seeing a plethora of these artists popping up on everyone's favorites these days, and not only for [...]

Enough of all that old stuff for a moment, it´s about time we played you something recent here again. Right? Right. Western States may be a Canadian band, but their second album Bye And Bye was fittingly recorded down in Texas. The steelguitar-drenched Time To Lose is a perfect example of their melancholic sound. Western States - Time To Lose MP3 King Creosote is the brainchild of Kenny Anderson, who comes from a big [...]

Mountains Below.

So I haven't done a "New on the 'Nets" post in a while, but I did post some recommendations on Thursday already...so, this may be a condensed version. So in order to fill out the post, a Saturday Playlist is in order!! Couple of items that I need to recommend: Daytrotter posted their J. Tillman session from SXSW . Very Nice - go sign up and pick up the 4 tracks! Laundromatinee has their Great Lake Swimmers session posted as well. Hit them up for some of the video [...]

The Western States's sophomore album Bye and Bye was released earlier this week. The Winnipeg band's moniker is very appropriate, as their sound is the kind of atmospheric Americana that conjures up images up dusty roads, sprawling plains, and fiery Western sunsets. The album was recorded live to two-inch tape, without any digital technology or effects. The result is an absolutely authentic listening experience, with several songs so potent you'll feel like you're witnessing a powerful live performance. "Time to Lose" opens the album with waves [...]

I'd like to second the opinion of my friends over at Captain's Dead , The Late Greats and Hero Hill and point you to the excellent Canadian americana band The Western States . I don't have anything special to add to the discussion, but if there can be hundreds of posts about Passion Pit than there can at least be a handful about The Western States. I really loved the band's last record and when the song "Diane" pops up on shuffle I'm still amazed a song of such high [...]

speaking of hotbeds of music, i have been getting a shitload of great stuff coming out of canada as of late. as of late meaning the past 6 months or so. regardless, of the time frame the quality of music speaks for itself. up next from america's hat, is the western states and their 5.5 release, bye and bye . in august of 08, armed with a bunch of songs, their equipment and a voice in their collective heads that said "go south," they made the two day long trek from winnepeg to austin. the album was recorded straight [...]

Winnipeg band The Western States recorded their sophomore album – Bye Bye (due May 5, 2009) – in Austin, Texas. They used tape instead of digital. They did it in six days. They made an alt.country album that would make Whiskeytown proud. myspace When we first started looking for Manitoba bands for the next edition of the Great Canadian Mixtape (yes, we are still working on that), the first place we turned was Winterpeg native and all-around good guy, Ken Beattie . Almost before I had even hit send on my email, he was replying with three simple words… The Western States . Their self-titled record was a treat, albeit one that I missed until it was already collecting dust on CD racks. Thankfully, front man Sean Buchanan [...]
Monday, October 27, 2008 Yeah Buddy! With my first trip ever to the soon-to-gone Texas Stadium I managed to will the Cowboys to a sloppy, but important win over the Buccaneers. Good stuff, right? I'm thinking I'll use this momentum to attempt doing the same for Tony Romo's healing process so that he can come back and replace Dead Arm Johnson. That guy has got to GO. Now. Or all will be lost. Anyhow, here's an EP to help get the week started. Enjoy. [...]
