Three piece Athens, Georgia band The Whigs derive from southern rock to sixties pop. Comprising of soothing tones and powerful notes found on their debut album " Give 'Em All A Big Fat Lip ", The Whigs prior to this played at college shows and opened for bands such as Elf Power, The Futureheads and so forth. Recorded themselves at Ross Crane House, an old historical site, Give 'Em All A Big Fat Lip is an enjoyable, sweet and lush melancholic piece. Think of Pedro The Lion, but more bright and catchy or even our favourites [...]

As promised, herewith are a few more delights tracked down at the excellent Spin.com Artist of the Week site. I'm only posting a fraction of the great grooves Spin.com so generously makes available on an ongoing basis. Copenhagen's Figurines cut a fine figure, left. Oh, ho ho. Figurines - The Wonder mp3 HiSoft - Soft Rock mp3 The Adored [...]

Okay, I'm a bit skitterish about this one, so please bear with me. Back in early December, I went group-by-group, song-by-song through a long list of artists I found at the 2006 South-by-Southwest festival website . I sampled every song I didn't already know and prepared my own list of the ones I liked best, old friends and new. For various reasons totally uninteresting even to myself I've just never posted a big bloc of the songs, some of which are by some of my favorite current artists. Soooooo, I'm simply [...]
Mike is a little under the weather, so he asked me to finish up the week for him. Let me know what I missed, because I am sure that it is quite a bit. On Friday night, local bands Go Nova , Black Before Red and The Channel are joined by Baton Rouge's The Eames Era for a great show at The Mohawk . The Always Already make their way to the Rhizome Collective and San Antonio's Buttercup play at [...]

I've only heard the most amazing things about The Whigs , namely from some of the djs at BTR and the Birdmonster boys. It's apparently quite the live show. Sadly, I haven't seen them live but I was mucho excited to receive their album Give 'Em All A Big Fat Lip in the mail today. There's something very familiar about this band, in a nostalgic early 90's kind of way. For some reason I've longed to obsess over Kurt Cobain and wear flannel for the past couple weeks, so this [...]

"If you're on the 118, I'll find you on the 118." You've never heard of the Whigs ? That's fine, because I jumped on this train a bit late myself. The band has been a favorite down in Atlanta for awhile now, but only since being signed to Dave Matthews' ATO Records have I really started paying attention. They've got a wonderfully inviting, organic feel to most of the tracks on their debut album entitled Give 'Em All A Big Fat [...]
WHIGS The Whigs just got a record deal. If you haven’t heard of them, they’re a three-piece band from Athens Georgia that sound absolutely nothing like REM. Nor do they sound anything like ATO Records labelmates My Morning Jacket or Ben Kweller. It’s straight up rock in the tradition of the Replacements with a slight Americana feel. Their debut album has a great title, “Give em all a big fat

The Whigs craft alternative guitar rock that serves their storied home town of Athens, Georgia, quite well. Originally self recorded and self released on a shoe string budget, their debut disc, Give 'Em All a Big Fat Lip has recently been re-released on ATO Records. So, just how tight were those proverbial shoe strings? Legend has it, the boys bought the gear needed to record the album on eBay and had to sell it all back once they were done. After all, Ramen Noodles don't grow on trees. "Technology" sounds like the type [...]

I really like this song by The Whigs ( myspace ). Off their newest release called Give 'Em All a Fat Lip which is a pretty good name for an album. Honestly, it's nothing revolutionary, but it's solid and catchy. Sometimes that's all you need. Plus they're from Athens which has a pretty damn good musical pedigree. ::: The Whigs - Technology The rest of the album is growing on me as well. You can buy it [...]

The coolest news around these parts this weekend is my newfound ability to bring music to any room in my house with the new iSphere that my folks got me as a belated birthday present! I love hearing the bass, cranking it loud directly from my iPod, and being able to cruise through my playlists whatever I am doing. It vastly improves upon my previous system of bringing my laptop wherever I wanted to listen to tunes, or being reclusive and putting in the earbuds. Yay! I think you should get one, definitely the [...]
Busy night last night, which followed a fantastic afternoon beatdown of Notre Dame by my Wolverines. First up was the Knitting Factory for Shearwater, Bottomless Pit and Magnolia Electic Co.. This was an early show with 7pm doors, so I figured that, like all NYC shows, that meant the first band would go on around 8pm. Err, no. I headed to the Knitting Factory as soon as the Michigan-Notre Dame
Something familiar, something peculiar, something for every blog at The Khyber tonight. Things kick off with Philly's own El Dorado, who will finally be pimping some much needed EP-age (so says their new website). Next up are wildly eclectic blog barnstormers The Annuals, whetting appetites before they return to play alongside Spinto Brut in late October. The Whigs rock good like a Georgia band should, lots of straight-ahead guitars and casually tossed-up vocals and an overall sense of everything that was just so right about mid-90's alternative rock...

I asked lead singer Parker Gispert point blank upon meeting him, "So has Greg Dulli ever come to one of your shows?" His answer, to paraphrase, was something in the neighborhood of, "No, but his lawyer was very interested in our band." The impressive three-piece outfit from Athens, GA who own the trademark on the name The Whigs aren't worried about Dulli bum rushing the stage anytime soon. "We had the name trademarked for a year. Anyone having claim on the trademark of the name has a year to step forward and [ The [...]
