Ok, so we got some interesting stuff going down in NYC this week... I tend to be a fan of Indie Rock that emphasizes the Rock part, so I am pretty stoked about the second installment of New York Magazine 's New York by New York experiment. Tonight at Studio B, The Thermals will be the house band for an evening of indie rock karaoke. I've heard the shindig was pretty swell last time around (with Of Montreal ), so work up your best Hutch Harris impersonation and come on [...]

The Whigs hail from Athens, GA and are the latest rockers to release an album on Dave Matthews' ATO Records. After the release of their debut album in 2006 the band spent almost a year and 1/2 before heading back in to the studio to record Mission Control, their debut for ATO. Along the way the band built a significant grassroots following and garnered a lot of online and traditional accolades

New music zeros in on the second album from The Whigs today, Mission Control . All the details to follow. Second disc from the garage rock outfit out of Athens, GA. A slicker sound this time around courtesy of producer Rob Schnapf (Beck, GBU, Elliott Smith) The album is full of heavy guitar rhythms, powerful drums, and touches of southern steel guitar and psychedelic pop, with [...]
I think Sal said in the comments that "Right Hand On My Heart" is his favorite song on the new Whigs album. While I love the song, I must disagree... This is easily my favorite song on the disc: The Whigs, "Hot Bed" Buy Mission Control at Lala.com!

London, England Lightspeed Champion is the solo work of Devonte Hynes, formerly of Test Icicles, but this material sounds nothing like the chaotic rock he's made in the past. Falling Off The Lavender Bridge was actually recorded in Omaha with Saddle Creek producer Mike Mogis and is getting a release date from Domino here in the US in one week. This week, my hands got so dry because of the cold, clear skies and the harsh soap at work, that I finally gave hand cream a try. All this week, I've been awakened over an hour early by the sound of some asshat's car alarm going off. I've started each day off having been shorted an hour of sleep because some idiot has pimped out his SUV with an alarm that goes off every time the wind blows. This stolen sleep may explain why I had The Script's Before The Worst on the mixtape this week. I listened to the song on Last.fm's new music streaming thingy (which, BTW- check your browser cache after listening to tracks...yep, they're all in there in 128 Kbps MP3's) [...]

amidst the sudden rash of anticipated albums that were released yesterday, i seem to be dragging my feet more than normal...& as i ponder half-assed posts for underwhelming (or hopefully just under-listened-to) offerings from cat power & black mountain, i've found myself unconsciously replaying the much hyped new album from the whigs all day..."unconsciously", i think, is the key word there, because after repeated listens i still haven't given much thought to why i like these guys, or if i even really do...maybe they just sound familiar, like the kind of garage pop they were playing on alternative [...]

Looking through the very first big week of album releases, I can't help but feel completely overwhelmed by all of it. Not only are we graced with new music from more well-known names, but there is just as much quality here from some names that may not exactly be on everyone's radar. Of course, we have Cat Power's second covers album, Jukebox , along with the latest effort from Drive-By Truckers, Brighter Than Creation's Dark - both of which are names that surely jump to mind right off the bat. I've only listened to [...]

The Whigs have a chip on their shoulder that's been tough to shake. Expectations for the band skyrocketed through the roof before they were even signed to a label, and when that first album didn't fully deliver on that promise many were disappointed. Yeah, too much hype can be a bad thing, especially when you're called "the next huge band out of Athens, GA" and that someday you'll "be mentioned in the same breath with greats like R.E.M." The pressure was on from the start. I sincerely hope that's all calmed down a bit now that The Whigs released their [...]

We have finally reached the weeks of huge release lists. This week boasts some big names and plenty of new bands ready to place themselves among some of your favorites. This week has a few EPs and a lot of full lengths, pretty much everything you could want. My pick for this week is MGMT's Oracular Spectacular . I know many people are looking forward to Cat Power's CD full of covers, but after spending a long time with the MGMT release, I have to say that it is fantastic. Not sticking to one genre, this album [...]

Does this make you happy? Dr. Cliff Arnall is the researcher from Cardiff University who has made his name identifying Blue Monday, " the most depressing day of the year ." (OK, It's not exactly splitting the atom or pasteurizing milk, but let's give Professor Cliff his fifteen minutes here.) We'll skip his formulas (weather, failed new years resolutions - what, already?), flow charts and graphs, and get right to it - the third Monday of each January is the date he's come up with. That, of [...]
I don't know how The Whigs escaped my radar. They're from Georgia. I love Georgia. They rock. And I usually enjoy those who rock. This is the first Whigs' song I fell in love with The Whigs - Technology The simple phrasing, the silly and nonplussed lyrics, and that break! Isn't that break amazing?! I can't wrap my head around it. What's even more amazing is that the Whigs were once named

Athens, GA should be smiling like a proud daddy. Two of it's finest bands have released albums today. I first saw the Whigs at SXSW last year in what might have been the warmest bar I've ever set foot in (and I've been on several Spring Breaks in Cancun). After one full day of drinking in Austin, the last thing I needed was a steaming hot bar stocked with men to soothe my hangover on day two. I remember bumping into some dude on the way to [...]
This is definitely one of those indie dominating weeks, with new releases from the likes of Cat Power , Dengue Fever , The Whigs or Get Set Go . Some highlights include Charlyn Marshall's (Cat Power) " Jukebox ," her second cover album, filled with great renditions of such classics as James Brows, Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan or Lee Clayton , as well as Athens, Georgia garage rock trio The Whigs and their sophomore release Mission Control . This latest album from the southerners is definitely a more then [...]
