I first caught The Whigs live back in 2006, just a little over a week before ATO re-issued the band's self-released debut Give 'Em All A Big Fat Lip . The SXSW week almost always coincides with modest releases, but this year it can't get any better. The highlight of the week is without a doubt Drive-by Truckers' highly anticipated eight studio effort " The Big To-Do ", which according to Patterson Hood is "very much a rock album. We headed up to Portland to catch Black Rebel Motorcycle Club play the Wonder Ballroom on Sunday, March 7. Athens, Georgia three-piece The Whigs kicked the night off with a blistering set of rock'n'roll; I'd never listened to these guys before, but I liked a number of their songs (especially the ones with long, wailing guitar solos-check out " Half The World Away "). Their frontman, Parker Gispert, seems to me a guy who bears watching: a smart guy with punk tendencies, his lyrics seem intelligent, his guitar work is on fire, and his dancing is manic. [...]
