Pierre de Reeder is best known for his role as a multi-instrumentalist in the band Rilo Kiley , but like the other members of the band, de Reeder occupies his down time with his own songwriting and recording. Technical Editor Nick caught up with Pierre on the phone to discuss his new album, The Way That it Was . They talked about the album, songwriting, influences, and Pierre's support for Barack Obama. Nick, PopWreckoning: How are you doing? Pierre de Reeder: Doing good, [...]

Monday, October 6, 2008 Good news! Noah and John Michael's recent weekend absences (due mainly to time constraints on everyone's end) will now stop with a plan that will see the two best guest writers in the world alternating Sundays. Sure, that means to get your fill of one of the other you'll have to wait two weeks, but we think that'll just make it all the more satisfying. Plus, this means I don't have to fire and hire anyone. [...]

People, I tell you -- this month is going to be the death of me. I can't manage much banter, but I can offer you music. No One's Better Sake Little Joy I love songs where something is a little off-kilter - syncopated or otherwise, just to keep you a bit ajar. Little Joy is the new sideband of Fabrizio Moretti (perhaps my favorite Stroke because of his divine percussive [...]
Maybe it's just us, but fall always seems to be such a depressing time of the year. The sky darkens earlier, the weather gets colder and colder, and aside from a few fortunate lucky kids in Texas, the music festivals are few and far between. Then again, the season does mark a rather stellar time for new music, something certainly reflected in this week's edition of our Friday Mixtape. So maybe things aren't so bad after all... NEW Singles: "Turn Me Off" by Audrye Sessions [...]
This week, Jenny Lewis released her second solo album, Acid Tongue , and I was fortunate enough to receive an advanced copy of the album for my "listening" pleasure. Unfortunately, the CD featured various copyright-protection security (it even has my name stamped on it) that only allows it to be played on a standard compact disc player, as opposed to the drives embedded in our computers. Why is this unfortunate? I don't have a standard CD player anymore. It didn't really dawn on me that there was a gap in my stereo equipment until I [...]

The Whispertown 2000 (oy, some bands really need better names) will soon be on tour with Jenny Lewis , and they've already opened for She & Him , Maria Taylor , and Bright Eyes . Their lackadaisical femme indie twang falls somewhere between Lewis (who guests along with Gillian Welch on the band's album Swim ) and Jolie Holland. *photo by Autumn deWilde Whispertown 2000 (long time friends of the Jenny Lewis crew in LA) are releasing their new album titled Swim on October 21st. Their sound is really very sweet and appealing. This album is the follow up to their 2006 release Livin in Dream . This fall they will likely have some tour dates, as well as some into 2009. Whispertown 2000 are Morgan Nagler, Tod Adrian Wisenbaker, Vanesas Corbala, and Casey Holden Wisenbaker. Look for the new album out on Acony Records [...]
If you're as big of a Rilo Kiley nerd as I am, you may have wondered in the past who the mysterious 'Morgan' is that's mentioned on Papillon and The Absence of God. The answer is none other than Morgan Nagler, lead singer of The Whispertown 2000. I've been aware of the band [...]

While Sunday is the official last night of the festival -closing out with a special Next Big Nashville edition of Nashville Sunday Night at 3rd and Lindsley - Saturday night is the last real night of showcases, and you have nine to choose from before the official after party at City Hall. My pick of the evening is actually that after party - The Features and Jensen Sportag ? Sign me up. But earlier in the night you have lots of great stuff to choose from - particularly the Lake Fever showcase at [...]

INTERVIEW WITH PONYTAIL Recently, Cannibal Cheerleader had the opportunity to conduct an interview with Ken Seeno of Baltimore's own Ponytail , a fantastic band whose new album Ice Cream Spiritual is fast becoming one of our favorites of the year. The band's penchant for wildly inventive riffs, 7-minute strong structures, and legendary live performances has garnered them international acclaim, and now Ken answers a few questions about what ties the Ponytail together. CC: Describe to us the story of Ponytail, what makes you tick and [...]
Here's a video involving one of my favorite things, Murphy Beds, by a guy who does a lot of flip books, another one of my favorite things. Find another another 26 second long video by Noah Dorsey, (who animated the video above) based on the Daniel Johnston song Speeding Motorcycle here. I *never* dream of doing push-ups in my dreams. Pushing up a murphy bed up after taking a nap, maybe. Whispertown2000: Follow You (Live). mp3 [...]
That flu bug got to us pretty hard this week and therefore it's taking longer than expected to get back into the thick of things. You know you're out of it when you wake up with the earplugs you put in the night before. We did check out many of the residencies this week... Good to see Radar Bros. after many years. We Barbarians are bringing the buzz that they ended 2007 with to the SLL and late
Excuse us, excuses. We were busy this week. Not just shows, which were many, but we're in the middle of some projects as well as some swell things planned for September through December. Oh, September. Typically one of the busiest months of the year for us as everyone prepares for that last fourth quarter hoorah, we've been strategizing this September for weeks. Three-day weekends are neat,
Whispertown 2000 - "Through a Hole". Some songs rely on the alchemy of voice & voice, or voice & guitar. Just the right emphasis, just the right drawl, just the right throat with just the right strings. "Through a Hole" is like this, but bolstered with other things that make a song good: boot-stamps, sing-along, glockenspiel, mild twang, lyrics fired like watergun sprays - quantity over quality, tossing rings to see what catches. It's really good! [buy it at their MySpace] Greg Peterson ft. Fiona Kelly - "How I Got To Memphis". I don't think Peterson ever actually got to [...]
