When we normally offer up a premiere, we try to offer you up something new to make you question your tastes and add something new and previously unfound into the mix. While that's all well and good, with "Be True To Your School (Til You Get Kicked Out)" from The White Wires , we just want you to rock out. And rock out you will. The group is straight up garage rock in the vain of other acts from Dirtnap Records (Exploding Hearts, the Briefs). So if that kind of all-out power [...]

I really don't know that much of the Ottawa underground garage music scene. I couldn't help but be curious to what Steve Adamyk Band sounds like. He plays in a wide sort of bands, one being the Sedatives who I saw play at Ottawa Bluesfest 2009. ( This being a funny photo I took of him ). It is not just Steve in the band, he has Male Nurse (who is covered on this site for mostly the acoustic side of his music), Emmanuel Sayer & Dave Williams who plays in [...]

Ottawa's The White Wires align to the season with that now all too familiar garage-y/power pop blend which really seems to be this summer's defining sound. But unlike many of the acts keeping it modern (case in point: Wavves), the trio shuffle back to the late '70s, when these sounds were first modern. Their tracks are sharp singalongs, arriving with just the right amount of gritty imperfections. You can't help but feel good about yourself—and everything around you—tapping your toes along to their uncomplicated melodies. "Pretty Girl" comes [...]

For months now, I have been telling anyone who would listen that I was going to Ottawa Bluesfest and how psyched I was about it. "Oh yeah?" people would ask, oftentimes feigning interest. "A blues festival in Ottawa, huh? That should be fun. Who's playing?" I would proceed to excitedly tell them that before we even get there, one of the nicest cities in Canada to visit will have already seen headlining performances by Iron Maiden, Furthur featuring Grateful Dead members Phil Lesh and Bob Weir in their [...]

The second last day of Ottawa Bluesfest . It was a rock and country theme on Saturday, July 17th. I was wondering if Nicole Kidman was around with Keith Urban?? The acts I saw were: The White Wires Bjorn Berge J.D. & The Details Matt Schofield Terrance Simien & The Zydeco Experience The Whigs The Hold Steady [...]

I must not have been paying very close attention in US History class (maybe I was concentrating too hard on drawing checkerboards on my Chuck Taylors with a Sharpie) because I swear I had never even heard of the Goodnight Loving Trail until I was googling the band Goodnight Loving from Milwaukee. Apparently, these cute boys that play twangy pop that gets me crazy named their band after an old cattle trail that was started by Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving in 1866... p...

Here is part 2 of the Gaga Weekend 3 at Yogi's. Bands that played were: Joliettes (from Sudbury) Germ Attak Centretown Cripplers White Wires The [...]

I haven't been this excited about new music since I've been doing this blog. There's a lot of heavy hitters putting out amazing albums, a refreshing and diverse change of pace after 20092s Animal Collective/Grizzly Bear/Dirty Projectors monopoly. The National, The Hold Steady, Joanna Newsom, Dum Dum Girls, and Broken Social Scene have obviously all been on heavy rotation lately. Plus, I'm already itching for new records from Beach Fossils, Wavves, The Books, Cloud Nothings, Best Coast, oh my goodness, too many to name. But you already know about most of those guys. The National are everyone and the album [...]

Last but not least to end off Kelp 16. This was the secret White Wires show. Took place on Victoria Island which is no secret anymore. When news broke out, people and myself were like "Where is it?". Anyways it was a fun and crazy show. The show was set up in a U-Haul. Generator blew out one time. Alot of people familiar and not familiar showed up. So fun that I decide to dance around. Here are the photos. [...]

Kelp Records is 16 years old. If only Think About Life was on Kelp, then they would be singing "Sweet Sixteen" for them. For those out of the loop. Kelp Records is a Ottawa based music label and its home to various artist like Jim Bryson , Andrew Vincent , Chris Page , The Acorn (who still calls Kelp home). Its becoming an annual tradition celebrating the label's achievement and to have fun with the music. This the second year now that the shows will be taking [...]

Here are three more artists to venture away with this weekend: Sarah Class For those who like: Feist This UK singer/songwriter should definitely hold appeal for those who like more mature music. Sarah Class' Myspace Nadia Kazmi For those who like: Norah Jones A Calgary native, Kazmi plays music that fuses pop with a jazzy influence. Nadia Kazmi's Myspace White Wires For those who like:

Friday started at Club DeVille at another Brooklyn Vegan event. Greenpoint, Brooklyn band Twin Sister were playing an early set at noon. A Lunch time gig, or breakfast rather, for the late risers in Austin is a toughone . The band sounded ok, maybe a little sleepy. I really like their freely downloadable ep Vampires with Dreaming Kids, but they didn't play my favoirte song from it, the Cocteau Twins-like Ginger. Up to this point corporate America had been hidden from [...]
As the news of Alex Chilton's passing began circulating around Austin, Dwight Twilley & Big Star's scheduled performance was hastily cobbled into a star-studded memorial to the late Box Top's musical legacy. And I missed every second of it

Filed under: Exclusive , Canada Ottawa's tourism board should probably steer clear of Ian Manhire. The man at the helm of garage-pop trio White Wires doesn't paint the most optimistic picture of his hometown -- at least that's the impression initially. "Being from Ottawa, it's like you have a card against already," Manhire tells Spinner on the line from the cold capital city. "No one ever expects to find any good bands here because no one comes to Ottawa to make it or get big or [...]
Two-day passes for the Atlanta Mess-Around are still available
I've been tracking my favourite songs all year and I literally had a enough to fit two albums worth. This got me thinking that next year I may produce a multi-volume "best of". I agree with G.R.O. that this year left no shortage of quality tracks and I hope that you enjoy some of my faves. Part 3 of 4: Last year in my year end round up of my favorite singles I wrote how the 7 inch single seemed to be coming back into favor. This year it went over the top. There seemed to be labels popping out of the woodwork who's main mission was to gather up the best songs and put them out on little pieces of vinyl. To reflect the bumper crop of singles I've expanded the year end singles count down to 40. Like Casey Kasem use to do, we're gonna count them down. I don't think we'll be doing [...]
