New feature time. I'm fascinated by a topic called "Today I listened to" on a message board I use, so I thought I'd let you guys know what I'm listening to. Abuse my ears if you like, or chime in with a "Hey great album, I must listen to it". It all helps. I love the comments. So add as many as you can. Happy Australia Day! 1 I admit that I am in no way Australian. I had to wikipedia "Australia Day" to figure out that it's kind of like our Fourth of July, only with citizenship awards and the Big Day Out festival and Triple J's Hottest 100. I used to listen to Triple J's Breakfast Show back when Adam and Wil hosted, and Tripod would do their song-in-an-hour schtick 2 , so I'm going to pretend that I'm qualified to make a totally unqualified post of totally awesome Aussie music. Foregoing some of the obvious [...]
Skinny Boy – Amy Milan For those who don't know, Amy Milan is the girl from Canadian band, Stars. While there are of course similarities, her solo album is actually quite different from the band's sound. It has an overarching country element to it, though I seemed to have picked the least country, and most stars-like song of the lot. Typical. It's a great album nonetheless. You Sound Like Louis Burdett – The Whitlams I recently saw The [...]
Single Days – Pale Young Gentlemen For the record, this ISN'T Franz Ferdinand. They may share similarly deep vocals, but that's where it ends. Still, I'm quite impressed with my Mum for hazarding such a guess. Next she'll be telling her friends about Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Getting back on track, Pale Young Gentlemen make a quirky blend of music that seams to combine foreign flavours, circus themes and radio pop into formula that quite bizarrely, works. Salvador – Jamie T Jamie T is a bit TOO [...]
As seems to be happening more often as the weeks go by, this episode has absolutely no theme. These artists have nothing in common other than they made music in the current decade. But of course, in this instance it is a positively good thing. There's a wide spread of musical styles, everywhere on the globe that matters is represented and there's a mix of beginning, flourishing and dying bands. What more could one ask for? Grab a refreshingly smooth Vanilla Coke and you're life will be complete Banquet - Bloc Party [...]
