The song that has epitomized my post-graduate school experience over the past two years has been Hall & Oates immortal "Rich Girl." It started innocently enough, with a simple, non-ironic love of that iconic '80s group, passed along to me through many a childhood viewings of the video for "Maneater" on MTV, and grew later in life with a burgeoning karaoke obsession (the song was one of the first I took to the mic). But last year, as my part time job prospects and adjunct teaching schedule began to put a strain on my pocketbook, and on more [...]

The Who - A Quick One While He's Away [ purchase ] There's a very good possibility this song doesn't meet the theme's criteria. But, it does have a few things going for it. 1) Features a girl who spends a year cheating on her boyfriend. When he finally comes back from wherever he was gone, she admits that she kissed a few guys, sat on Ivor the engine driver's lap, and later, took a nap with Ivor. Of course, "napping" was that generation's "rusty trombone." So there's that. [...]

***ATTN: LINKS REMOVED!*** Landmark day here at Fong Songs... I received my first dreaded "cease & desist" letter from Blogger: " Blogger has been notified, according to the terms of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), that certain content in your blog infringes upon the copyrights of others. The URL(s) of the allegedly infringing post(s) may be found at the end of this message. By the time The Clash released Combat Rock in 1982, the band was on the verge of total collapse. The group had let go of a phenomenal drummer, Topper Headon, due to his growing addiction to heroin. Meanwhile, the remaining members of the band were at war as well. Singer/guitarist Joe Strummer and bass player Paul Simonon were becoming increasingly annoyed with the antics of guitarist/singer Mick Jones. The punk rock band that had taken flight in 1977 was suddenly falling apart after a remarkable five year run. How many other bands can cram three single, one double [...]

Halloween is just around the corner and for many folks, it's time to start getting your costumes in order and candy bowls full. But what about those looking for something a bit more music oriented on All Hallows Day, and not in terms of Michael Jackson makeup? No worries. Thanks to some due diligence from CoS contributor Dustin Wiyrick, we got you covered... Paul Van Dyke, Moby, and The Crystal Method will be among the DJs offering cool beats at Seattle's WaMu Theater for FreakNight XII . [...]
by alyssa coluccio (pics by the de wilde's) I want to see a world where people dance in tie-dyed gauze dresses, sing to an acoustic guitar and laugh as a strong hand and steady eye paint multi-colored butterflies on children’s faces. I want to see people sitting amidst the twinkling lights of a Parisian carnival, catch someone covered head to toe in fluorescent price tags, and find a lone figure at a piano, surrounded by silence. Don’t you? ACID TONGUE BY JENNY LEWIS: [...]
don't have a cold and or flu, just been really cold today especially shopping in b'stoke, surprised that it didn't rain. But I had fun today, got some new clothes, spending my hard earned wages. Felt like posting the following that I've recently listened to. GUILTY PLEASURE ALERT!!! Amerie - 1 Thing one of my favourite songs of recent years, if only all r&b sounded this good. Jamie T - Dry Off Your Cheeks The Who - I Can't Explain [...]
I've got one last 80s-themed cover post for you with a slight twist. As cover enthusiasts would probably know, a handful of big one-hit wonders of the 80s were in fact covers themselves: Soft Cell's Tainted Love , Kim Carnes' Bette Davis Eyes , and Tiffany's I Think We're Alone Now , to name a few off the top of my head. While I focused previously on newer covers of 80s songs, today's post features covers that are by artists primarily known for their 80s musical output, either released in the 80s [...]

My Take: The Who's Magic Bus album was released in 1968 with the misleading "On Tour" title. Magic Bus is not a live album by any means and was released to keep Who fans satisfied while they anxiously awaited 69s Tommy. But it also made Decca a few dollars and is similar in concept to the Stones' Flowers and the Small Faces' excellent From The Beginning lp. Magic Bus was made up of prior singles, b-sides, ep tracks and the like - all dating from around 66-67. Run Run Run, I Can't Reach [...]

The song selection, the pacing, the energy, it's all representative of a band given forty-five minutes as an opener for a huge headliner.
The Who is one of those classic bands that everyone has to love on mere principal alone. That being said, this live performance from 1982 of “Boris the Spider” at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, seemed like something we all needed to re-watch in hopes of bringing in some of that Halloween spirit. Mixing comedy and horror, The Who brought us a song in 1966 inspired by John Entwistle’s fear of spiders as a kid. “Boris the Spider” was originally written as a joke, since during a long night of drinking with Rolling Stones bassist [...]

Despite the dodginess of continuing to bill themselves as The Who, Roger and Pete deserve credit for doing a little somethin' for the Motor City.
Songs about madness seemed to be a big deal in the late-1960s, and most of my playlist originates from that era. The rise of psychedelic drugs - and the resulting psychoanalytic push - acted as a muse for many songwriters to document the ordeals of mental instability. Since I wrote the intro to this month's selection, I'll let the songs do the rest of the talking - have fun! "Helter Skelter" - The Beatles (from The Beatles [a.k.a. The White Album] ) This song ostensibly is Paul [...]

I cruised across this posting of R.A.C. not stoked that SebastiAn paid him the highest form of flattery on his joint. So basically they made an almost identical remix/mash big whoop, cop a listen or read R.A.C.'s posting if you like. Anyway you put it, look at the facts... I jocked this posting from Panda Toes... cause it was well done... deal with it. RAC - Not Cool SebastiAn Posting The Who- Baba O'Reilly(SebastiAn Remix) The Who- Baba O'Reilly(RAC EDIT)

For those that don't know, there's a dude named Barack Obama running for president quite soon. I'll be DJing an event benefiting his campaign this Friday in Portland, Maine. If you're eighteen or older (and an American) there's no excuse to not vote in this upcoming election - whether you support McCain or Obama, get out there and spend the little time it takes to voice your opinion. On that note, watch this lil' flick that (though the audio is horrific) is hilarious. And because y'all like music (as [...]
I must offer full disclosure before reviewing Roger L. Trott’s book, Getting in Tune . I myself grew up in Northern California, all my guy friends were in bands, and I desperately love the Who. So when I picked up this rock fiction book about a band from a small northern California town with a main character that worships Pete Townshend, I had a sneaking suspicion I’d love it. Set in the late 70’s, Getting in Tune tells the story of Daniel Travers, a guitar player whose wrestling with his demons. He’s also struggling to [...]
