Rock music as we know it is relatively young compared to the distinct genres that classify any number of nation around the world. Even compared to that of basic American jazz and blues it finds itself a younger sibling, stemming from a later seed, which finds itself further down the musical food chain. It's [...]
“ Today was a good day: left my nigga's house paid; picked up a girl been tryin to fuck since the twelfth grade (it's ironic, I had the brew she had the chronic); the Lakers beat the Supersonics. I felt on the big fat fanny, pulled out the jammy, and killed the punanny .†- Ice Cube, "It Was a Good Day" Today was the day I wanted yesterday. Now, of course, I have to go to work in a few short hours. Oh well. Sorry for the lame update today. [...]

When I issued this challenge, it seemed easy at the time: pick a few of my faves, dig deep, float a list, no problem. Then I actually sat down to assemble the list and said "woah - how'd I come up with this, again?" Shaking off that doubt, I continued by laying down some personal ground rules: I wouldn't use The Beatles or Simon & Garfunkel for a "fave." I figured that most of the "deep" tracks by these two are already common knowledge - and also came [...]

(MP3s: 36 of them beyond the jump) Peer Gynt (1867) by Henrik Ibsen marks the end of romantic nationalism in Norway. In 1874 Edvard Grieg was asked to compose music for the play (or rather, was given a lot of cash to ditch a less profitable project with Norwegian author Björnstierne Björnson). As Ibsen's play grew on him, he complained to his friend Frants Beyer; "It is an immensely difficult subject, and I've done something to the [...]

Editor's Note: This post was written by Brian Buta. He is a guitar player and vocalist for Baltimore's Faster Faster Harder Harder . Subhumans are my favorite punk band, though there are numerous others close to the top (Dead Kennedys, Clash, Buzzcocks, Ramones among them). I used to drive around Baltimore County with EP-LP cranking out of the dying speakers of my old turd brown car. Maybe that doesn’t sound very exciting, but those were some great times [...]

Even with the end of Guided By Voices , frontman Robert Pollard remains more then prolific in his output. Normal Happiness represents his second solo album released this year (the first being From a Compound Eye ) on top of albums from side projects Pyscho and the Birds, The Takeover, and Keene Brothers (with Tommy Keene .) Normal Happiness , however, represents a change.... or perhaps an [...]

The Who, "It's Not Enough" The Who, "Tea and Theater" The Who, "Happy Jack" I've been a little down today, having feelings that I am getting played by people in my life. In the spirit of my newfound zen shit, I'm feeling a sense of defiance, realizing it's time to put those people out of my life and move ahead. Won't get fooled again, yamean? Oh, segue, sweet segue. The Who are releasing a new album, Endless Wire , [...]

Why is everyone running around acting like the new Kasabian record is Sam's Town Volume 2 ? I got a copy of it last week and I quite enjoy it. I think it's on par with their debut record (three or four killer songs, one or two other decent tunes and the rest kind of meh). From the reviews I read I expected a trainwreck of epic proportions, but nothing could be further from the case. Also, the two songs they've picked for singles are two of the weaker tracks on the [...]

"Let’s pretend we just went off stage and we had our oxygen, our transfusions, our coke and brandy like rock stars do…or did." Pete Townshend, 25 Sept 06 Near the end of Monday night’s Who concert in Chicago, Pete concluded the band introduction with “the remains of Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey.†This after a winded Daltrey briefly left the stage, leaving Pete to carry on with My Generation . A sign of the times? Surely the dynamic duo has lost a [...]

I'm pretty excited about the new Who album coming out next month. I've been a huge fan since I got "Who Are You" for my birthday many, many years ago. I had an opportunity to see The Who at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles in 1980. In the 26 years (has it really been that long?) since, I've seen probably hundreds of bands, but I'll always remember the power behind this legendary band. "Endless Wire" will be the first release from the band since 1982's "It's Hard." In a press release Pete Townsend posted on his [...]

Mere days after the end of ACL Fest, Virgin Festival is about to take over Baltimore. It takes place on Saturday with 14 bands ( Keane dropped out) on 2 stages and 6 DJs playing inside a dance tent. While ACL was excess at its finest, Virgin Fest takes what appears to be a minimalist approach. After taking a closer look, you will see that this is not the case. For $97.50 plus tons of surchages, you would hope not. [...]
Normally, when a celebrity who's alive and well is marked off as dead and buried, it's down to the internet. The greatly-exaggerated death of Doris Day, though, is a bit more exotic: Pete Townshend included her in a list song of dead celebrities, Mirror Door. (Which is, of course, a bit like Endless Art by A House.) Day gets sandwiched between Dave Van Ronk and Bobby Darin, but is, of course, still alive: "I was absolutely convinced she was dead" [said Pete] Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps. music [...]

In 1968 the Rolling Stones hosted an event called the Rock and Roll Circus and invited all their best buds. The show was taped for television, but never aired due to less than thrilling result. The eventoccurred prior to the YouTube times we so gloriously live in today, so most performances remained unseen until 1996 when a VHS version was released. The premise was a wild and crazy "circus" of music showcasing the era's brightest artists. The Who, John Lennon, Marianne Faithful, Jethro Tull, and of course the Rolling Stones. Brian Jones appears in what [...]

This summer is going by with the quickness. It's hard for me to believe that the event I've been basing the whole summer on -- next weekend's Lollapalooza concert in Chicago -- is just around the corner. Since it's the only real vacation I've planned, it kind of bums me out that, considering how fast the rest of this season has gone by, it will soon be over. I have mixed emotions about summer. While I have great memories of family road trips to the East Coast and endless days at Elmwood Pool in [...]
