Singularity— Northlane Northlane was a band recommend to me by a friend, who likes hardcore/metal much more than I do. Here I am listening to the latest release by Sydney band Northlane, from whom I have not heard a single note. I'm jumping into this review after weeks of listening to mostly garage rock and classic ballads, so here we go. The album starts with a short minute-and-a-half song titled Genesis , which could barely be described as an introduction. It fires right in, and I already know what this [...]

20Jazzfunkgreats face a wicked optimisation problem: They have set up their operation so that they cannot profit privately from it, in the way in which creative entrepreneurs do using that old and trusted ‘razor and razorblades’ business model. This minimises potential pressures/temptations to stay on top of what’s going on with the ‘scene’, write tractable and press-releasable reviews, do exclusives of ok stuff, visit their analytics page to assess progress against KPIs (high five if you know what this is), don’t write about themselves in the third-person, or keep any [...]

Windbreaker - Astral Projected Gunship ( mp3 )

(More here ) On the 19th of January 2012, a zillion innocent songs faced obliteration . They had been caught in the middle of a battle pitting a Mount Rushmore of severe lawyerly faces, pockmarked with threatening takedown tendrils, and the khaki lords of the cloud, bloated by the windfall of a thousand network effects. No-one cared for the songs. They had long lived miserable existences locked in the zip cells of a cybernetic prison, crammed between adverts for scantily dressed ladies and pills supposedly [...]
![[Introducing] – We Are Losers](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3771676_lg.jpg)
Tweet Well, this is refreshing. It's not exactly uncommon to find bands promising the world and failing to deliver, but it's a crime We Are Losers certainly can't be accused of. I mean, right there in the title: if they sucked you could hardly accuse them of trying to disguise the fact. They don't suck though. They pound drums, and coax squeals and yelps out of guitars, and shout vocals that are still barely audible through the noise, but they don't suck. The [...]

Frank Yang A number of things I hadn't done in a while: gone to a show; gone to a show at The Horseshoe; gone to a show whose bill was filled with bands I'd never seen before. Friday night, I kicked off Labour Day weekend by addressing all three of these things by seeing London's Male Bonding , Austin's Love Inks and locals Neon Windbreaker and Huddle . At the 'Shoe. In case that wasn't clear. This isn't to say I had no backstory with the bands. I [...]

Toronto's Neon Windbreaker is a windbreaker more in the sense that they'll knock the wind out of you rather than...like a person who farts a lot or the 80s jacket . There's a lot of jagged edges, scorched vocal howling. Reminds me of another band if they were more open to hooks...but I won't say who ...but they're very cool...Also, they released an EP as a sandwich . Oh, kids these days. If you're in Toronto, you can catch them at one of their NXNE shows .

Preston G Parallax - 20 Jazz Funk Great's very own non-existant Sci-Fi author and pseudo-alter-ego, once himself came up with his very own non-existant Sci-Fi author and pseudo-alter-ego. A huge fan of the writer Kilgore Trout (although he hated Vonnegut), Preston was inspired to pepper his novels with appearances by his fictitious second self - Prestwick L. Parallox. In Preston's seminal (yet unknown) novel 'Verse-Chorus-Metaverse' , Prestwick L. Parallox makes no fewer than 8 appearances. They mainly describe a sub-plot where Prestwick is dropped by his publisher, only to be rescued by a bunch of Sci-Fi/Music zine writers, who are [...]

Obviously, I listen to a lot more music than I'm able to share on this site. A lot more. The thing is... writing reviews takes time, and I have two jobs, a baby, a wife, and a dog that all require my attention. It's sometimes hard to find time to write lengthy reviews of all the stuff I want to feature. ReviewShine Wednesday was one attempt to feature more music by writing shorter reviews of newer stuff. Of course, there's a lot of stuff I dig that isn't featured on that site. [...]

[caption id="attachment_13223" align="alignnone" width="445" caption="California Wives"] [/caption] Well, if you couldn't tell by stepping outside this morning, Summer is ending and Fall is near. It's practically chilly in the shade! Still, Chicago's festival season and outdoor performances roll on. Of course there's the North Coast Music Festival set to take over Union Park this weekend. Be sure to check out our North Coast Music Festival Preview before heading out there this afternoon. Also set for this weekend is the Joyous Outdoor Event with music curated by the Metro and featuring [...]

The Southeastern United States was the epicenter of jangly 80s music, in particular Georgia and North Carolina. Here are some of my favorites from the great Southeast. GEORGIA The grandfathers of jangly 80's rock, R.E.M. got their start on the campus of the University of Georgia in Athens. Their first single was released on the independent Hibtone label in 1981. It included two songs that were re-recorded for release two years later on their Murmur LP. Here are the original [...]
