[There's plenty of great Christmas songs out there, but most suffer terribly from over-exposure. To remedy that, EbM presents a selection of alternative Christmas songs .] I mentioned in the first post of this Christmas series that I am a big fan of the XO for the Holidays compilations, and here's further proof of that. I'm not usually a fan of bands that put a Micro Korg front-and-centre, but despite doing this The Winter Sounds have thoroughly won me over. The second of the [...]

Yep. That's it. Just a pic. Go see them. It's only $5. Okay, maybe there's a track below. But still, just go see them. Wait, one more thing. They will be joined buy The Winter Sounds - the hardest working, most under appreciated band that you haven't heard but should. There. That's enough. Now go already. Nashville's THE WINTER SOUNDS just sent us over a few links directing attention towards free downloads of their last full length 'Church of the Haunted South' as well as a mix of eclectic tracks spanning b-sides, remixes, the Pinebox EP, as well as holiday themed tracks. Today's feature is taken from the latter compilation and represents a different sound for the group, as remixed by Remix Artist Collective (RAC) member Andrew Maury. Today's feature is the track 'Candlelight' from the Haunted South album with a bit of a different sound than what you have traditionally [...]

The suburbs deserve good music too. This became all too clear when we recently brought one of my old pals from New York to visit our Decatur home. He said something along the lines of "this is a nice little suburb." We were obviously aghast - as like most Decaturites, we like to think of ourselves as "in-towners." As we drove back home after dropping our friend off at his downtown hotel, reality came crashing down on us. We may have Eddie's Attic and Decatur CD, but gosh, we might live in the suburbs after [...]
Some bands can be hard to keep track of for a variety of reasons. Some bands get a big label push that unexpectedly disappears just as quickly as it appeared. Some bands are always on the road, proverbially homeless and playing any gig any where they can find the space. Some bands suffer [...]
Lots of good new stuff will be forthcoming from our newest feature for new music from new places - The Telephone Game - but before we get there here's a special Xmas/Holiday edition. These folks sent us their holiday tunes and we're just passin' 'em along. Seems like a classic re-gift scenario to us. Note that [...]
This was really hard for me this year. Spending more time with this project (i.e., the blog), intentionally listening to more music, and talking to more people about music, exposed me to more music in the past twelve months than I think I have ever heard in that same period of time in my [...]

The shops may think that Christmas starts in mid October, but we all know that in reality you should only start preparing on 1st December with that first choccy in the advent calendar. So as a way of starting off the musical advent (and I'm in no way religious, but enjoy a reason for a gluttonous festival as much as the next man), we have a little Christmas/winter indie mixtape from the kind folk over at XO Publicity . A little change from the Slade/Wham/East 17 that you"re all hearing elsewhere. We've always done a [...]
Today's free and legal mp3 downloads: XO Publicity has put together a free and legal album of holiday music, XO for the Holidays: Volume II . Since today marks the unofficial opening of the Christmas and Hannukah season in the US (and since my wife will finally consent to holiday music being played in the house), I thought it a good day to share some festive music. THe BAcksliders : "Christmas (Doesn't Have To Be So [...]
"So that was the first big weekend of the summer... Starts Thursday as usual with a canteen quiz and again no-one wins the big cash prize. Later I do my sound bloke routine by approaching Gina's new boyfriend to say that he shouldn't feel that there's any animosity between us and then I even go and make peace with her. I shouldn't have bothered. Then on Friday night we went through to the Arches... There was only one car going, so some of us had to get the train. We got through quite late. Then we went to a pub [...]
I've finally slashed my email inbox to 200 emails. I've literally been sitting here for a good portion of today, just getting through the emails. Sadly I've had nothing else to do today. I think this is one of the strongest portions of the "music from the inbox" series. Every one of these songs is pretty strong! Anyway, click the song, digg it, visit them on myspace to find out more! To eke out an existence most bands need to tour constantly. When the band's van falls apart that could mean the end of it.That's what indie rockers The Winter Sounds face right now. The band's van needs some new tires and they are appealing to fans to help keep them on the road. There's some great incentives for those who help out too.Check out the appeal from the band themselves:"We like to

The Winter Sounds are back with another great release Church of the Haunted South . The album is a 12 song re-envisioning of all things that were great about Brit & Scottish pop from the late 70s and all throughout the 80s. The album is like listening to your old records and reminiscing of a time when MTV still played videos and you could not wait to see what was coming on next. Take a listen to "Trophy Wife" in the player below. The band has also kindly made the track available as a free download. [...]
"Trophy Wife" - the Winter Sounds An intent, energetic rocker with an underlying Cure-ishness at its core, from its ringing, two-part guitar melody and mobile bass line to its yelpy-voiced front man, Patrick Keenan, who edges pleasantly towards the almost hysterical in his upper register. I'm mentally searching rock history for this voice's precedent and I can't find anything notable that goes further back than Robert Smith, truly the godfather of the almost-hysterical yelpers who've come along since 1979. I like how you can hear Keenan gulp for air in the middle of [...]

The Winter Sounds Church of the Haunted South Theory 8 Records www.myspace.com/thewintersound s www.thewintersounds.com With an album name like "Church of the Haunted South" too many cultural references involving Faulkner, Appalachia, moonshine, voodoo or redneck rivieras come to mind. Instead head Winter Sound, Patrick Keenan throws it a different way, with mournful meditations, danceable songs, and pure pop more kin to Cali or Britain than with Birmingham or Chattanooga. That said, that's probably more of our culture's problem than theirs--we anticipate a certain "Southern" sound [...]
