Taking too long - Wipers Download: 01-taking-too-long.mp3 The Wipers to me are a band who never seemed not to know completely what they were doing. From the very beginning, everything seemed [...]
Long night last night. Long day today. The fucking Giants game pissed me off. I don't have much else to say right now, so here's your mix tape. I'll be back tomorrow. I'm busy watching Apocalypse Now to alleviate my myriad frustrations. It helps. RULES for uninitiated noobs: I give birth to a weekly Mix [...]

Recent Acquisition: Is This Real? by Wipers (Taken with instagram )
Katy Goodman's definitely an in-demand lady at the moment with her work split between Vivian Girls and La Sera. She'll be releasing her latest La Sera effort, Sees the Light , on March 27 via Hardly Art . From what we've heard so far, sounds like a hit. Luckily we caught up with her via the Internet to get her thoughts on the upcoming SXSW Festival... ATH: What is [...]

And might I mean that quite literally. Not 'probably functional', it's still all very much up in the air, but it's plausible I might be back in something resembling the land of the living. I think the work which had to be done pretty much immediately has had the effect of jump-starting a spluttering brain. The Josh T. Pearson Toad Session is finished and ready to publish next weekend (assuming he's happy with it), and Ian and I have been plotting this year's Song, by Toad Records er, strategy, if you can call it that (just listen to [...]

Cleveland's own Cloud Nothings will be releasing their 2nd LP, Attack on Memory , on January 24th via the Carpark label. The album was recorded by Steve Albini at his own Electrical Audio Studios. While Cloud Nothing-in-chief Dylan Baldi was creating Attack on Memory , he writes... "I more or less memorized every guitar solo on the best Thin Lizzy albums, listened to only The Wipers for about 3 weeks, and fell asleep to Black Sabbath every night." The LP is reportedly [...]

Fat Cat friends Mazes and my perennial 2011 favorites, Eagulls , have finally released this much anticipated split 73 via Mazes-off-shoot Italian Beach Babes . Obviously you get the intricate artwork I believe to be a product of George Mitchell's pen, and you get duelling Wipers covers with Eagulls tackling Mystery and Mazes take on Messenger , and then you get a original cut from each. I've waxed poetic about both the Eagulls jams [...]

“As with every Wipers LP I would spend many months observing people and their situations to get ideas of what was in their mind and their motivations. This was always where the inspiration would come from for our songs. I would get a glimpse of the future by doing this and it was easy to write songs that would make sense 10 years from then. The Wipers songs and sound has always been a reflection of real life. I would look for raw and powerful emotions to write about, things that would bring a sense and illusion of realism, this [...]

In honor of Nevermind's 20th year, we compile a list of of artists and songs that made it happen. In 2001, the independent label Late Night Tales began a series of mix CD's consisting of tracks compiled by notable artists entitled "Another Late Night" which eventually was changed to the name of the label. "Late Night Tales" has had many notable contributors over the years including the Flaming Lips, Belle & Sebastian, Air, and most recently MGMT. Sadly, this series began seven years [...]
The Wipers - Over The Edge (live - 1983) (by slashyrface ) From the documentary Northwest Passage: Birth of Portland’s DIY Culture, Greg Sage’s legendary Wipers live in 1983. ‘It’s not the truth I seek / It’s just a mockery / Don’t need to waste my time / You know I’ve really tried / You take and never give / It get’s so hard to live / I’m hangin on a ledge / Pushed straight over the edge’

...And we want to be free to kick out the jams It used to be that there was nothing more American than beer, bar-b-ques, Air Conditioners, TVs, car washes, and rock music. You could always count on things that were made proudly in the good ole' U.S.A. We know where this went. However, the one thing though that will always remain true is on this very short playlist is american made rock-n-roll until they figure out how to outsource that shit. Ok with the exception of the U2 track you know what I am getting [...]
If you were to look up the biographies of the Vaselines and the Raincoats, you would likely find within the first paragraph a mention of how Kurt Cobain’s adoration sparked renewed interest in those bands. The same could be said for Portland, Oregon’s Wipers . Formed in 1978, “The Wipers were more of an idea than a band,” explained founder Greg Sage. “I wanted to do something different with music.” As such, Sage’s original intent was “to do fifteen albums in ten years, never do interviews, never release photographs, have absolutely no information about [the band] at [...]

Quietus Mix 31: Alec Empire's Empirical Evidence by The Quietus on Mixcloud The Quietus :"That the world is a better place with Alec Empire in it is an indisputable truth. Summer is coming and the sky is falling with all these tornadoes so as you are ducking for cover I thought it would be cool to give you a theme playlist. Here's some songs about aliens and UFO's. I know we're not alone somehow. The photo above is from the mars probe which I thought was so alien and beautiful looking. The real Men in Black know the deal. They are keeping secrets from the masses. Sunlamp Show MP3 by The Aliens from the album Luna [...]

Here is a quote from this week's D2P with Eagulls : "An eagle could easily knack a kestrel, but I suppose a kestrel would be better to just chill out with." And below is their killer cover of The Wipers. Read more and stream their new single at The Fader . Eagulls - Mystery (The Wipers cover) [mp3]
