As I wrote just over a year ago in a 2-part feature on How To Be A Coverblogger [ Pt. 1 / Pt. 2 ], keeping a coverblog requires a touch of obsession, an itch to live the writing life, and a willingness to keep a keen eye on a select handful of trusted sources. But though we watch the other coverbloggers carefully throughout the year, we are folkies first and foremost here at Cover Lay Down. And - as we noted atop our year's end mix - some of the [...]

The Wooden Birds – Two Matchsticks. Download "Two Matchsticks" (mp3). The Wooden Birds started as the primary project of American Analog Set's Andrew Kenny. The second album under this moniker became a fuller project with a band made up of members of Matt Pond PA and Western Keys. The acoustic-based songs are locked in a hypnotic groove with a natural, driving percussive sound. The layered vocals and shared leads add a bit of diversity this mellow rock album.

Frank Yang For a guy who made his name on being sad and lonely, Justin Vernon sure has a lot of friends. The first Bon Iver record, For Emma, Forever Ago , became the soundtrack for broken hearts when it was released in 2008 and with this year's self-titled letting some sun into his secluded musical cabin, so to speak, his legion of followers continued to swell. As of this past Tuesday night, he could list two sold-out shows at Massey Hall (approximately 5500 people), four Grammy [...]

And the parade continues... I forget how much fun I had making these. Blogophilia 11 was released in September 2009. If you've been following along, you should have noticed that I am deep in my "Intro" phase for mixes. I am not sure why I stopped that. Maybe that's something to consider for next mix. The highlights for #11 are All the Kings Men by Wild Beasts and Sleep All Summer by The National and Saint Vincent . I apologize for putting the Pete Yorn tune on [...]

Wooden Birds - Two Matchsticks Back in 2009, Austin, TX quartet The Wooden Birds released their debut album Magnolia to positive reviews. And two years later not only is their sophomore effort Two Matchsticks better. But it's simply bigger. The first time around, The Wooden Birds cemented their sound - a mix of whispery but assured vocals from frontman Andrew Kenny and Leslie Sisson, spoken over rambling and babbling guitars and percussion. It's a contrast that sounds both distinct and organic. This time around on Two Matchsticks , the [...]

It could just be my ears, but this song is grunge. Yeah I know there's a lack of distortion and (possibly) flannel, but this simple strummed-out riff reminds me of the kind of thing the late great Kurt Cobain would've created. The song is vaguely upbeat…lyrically, however, it is anything but. I dig the half-story of the words, and the vocals are easy on the ears. The Wooden Birds released their second album, Two Matchsticks , in June. You can pick it up below. The Wooden Birds - Two Matchsticks [...]
