Frank Yang It's funny that though I offered readers an introduction to The Wooden Sky just last month , watching them play an in-store at Sonic Boom on Monday night, the eve of release for their new album If I Don't Come Home You'll Know I'm Gone , it felt like I was the one being introduced to them for the first time. Previously, I'd regarded them as very good with moments of great roots-rock band - terrific at what they did but unlikely to turn anyone's world upside down. [...]

The Wooden Birds tour with Great Lake Swimmers Release "Hometown Fantasy" video + MP3 The Wooden Birds ' first album, 'Magnolia' , is out now on Barsuk Records. Fans of the AmAnSet will recognize Andrew Kenny 's voice and song writing immediately, but the arrangements on 'Magnolia' are more vocal and percussion heavy than anything he's done before. Full of guitar-top drumming and beautiful harmonies, and anchored by Kenny's percolating, vibey bass, 'Magnolia' rolls by like a float down an [...]

Roma Termini (Train Station) - Lacio, Italy As some of you may know, I spent the last month with my girl friend traveling to every Piazza of Italy. And as some of you might know, that kind of traveling involves bus/train rides that map-out hours-long. And as some of you might know-OK, I'll stop with the tomfoolery and get to the point. I decided to break away from the original format and bridge the gaps between those brighter moments of my iPod's shuffle-mode, particularly during these lengthy commutes. This is a mix of songs [...]

I've been a bit...uhh...tied up lately. I know I've been gone for a few days...but we'll be back in full force tomorrow. New Kuestionnaire . New music . A few mixes lined up. Lots of ideas to share and spread. Here's some music I've been listening to that will hopefully tide you over... Ramona Falls – I Say Fever from Intuit (2009) The Wooden Birds [...]

Frank Yang It was a bit embarrassing running not one but two contests around The Decemberists' latest opus The Hazards Of Love without actually having heard the record, so a couple of weeks ago I went out and actually got myself a copy of the dang thing. I count myself a long-time fan of the band but haven't been that taken with Colin Meloy's more proggish, long-form compositions and Hazards seemed to be the grand culmination of those inclinations and honestly, I was [...]

One of my absolute favorite albums that has come across my desk lately is Magnolia , by The Wooden Birds. This debut disc is an excellent listen, one that blends a rich mix of folk, alternative and Indie music. The Wooden Birds is a side project of Andrew Kenny, also of the American Analog Set. They're not a group that I'm familiar with, but I like the way that they approached this album. The [...]

Band: The Wooden Birds From: Austin, TX Sound: A hushed and foggy locomotive chugging smokestacks of folk rock at dawn Similar Artists: Bon Iver, Iron & Wine, Band of Horses, Here We Go Magic Listen: "False Alarm" Andrew Kenny is best known for his work in the seminal indie band American Analog Set . And while the atmospheric shadow cast by this project may never find him in danger of having screaming teens approach him [...]

Austin four-piece The Octopus Project are back on the road (dates below) previewing tracks from their new record, Golden Beds , which will drop tomorrow, July 28th. They recently debuted the first of many "Visual Music" performances, playing at Austin's Fashion Awards and rounding out an incredible 4th of July show at Stubb's with Explosions In the Sky and The Wooden Birds . In celebration of the EP and tour, the band are giving away a [...]

So the sun has finally decided to come out in Massachusetts, and it's about time. I glanced at my calendar today and discovered that it is in fact already mid-July (I'm still not entirely sure where June went), and that means we are over halfway done with 2009. In celebration here is a rough list of my 10 favorite records to be released to date. Have your own list? Feel free to post it as a comment. 1. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest [...]
I came to the party late on American Analog Set. A couple years ago I was invited to an event deep in Brooklyn for a publicity company celebrating their tenth year in business. Broken Social Scene played for a small crowd of jaded music writers. Andrew Kenny was there; his fiancée (wife?) was one of the publicists at the agency. I didn't really know him outside of being "the guy who covered "Line of Best Fit" on a split EP with Ben Gibbard. read more
Yep, it's time again for the quintessential "so far" list - no music site is complete without one! 2009 is shaping up to be an interesting year, with old favorites and newcomers alike issuing strong releases. In an attempt to make some sense out of everything, our staff got together to vote on our favorites. We'd love to hear your thoughts as well - what did we get wrong or miss? (For better or for worse, our cut-off date was June 15, 2009 - leaks DO count). Results after the jump... [...]

Looking for a way to celebrate your 4th of July in style? Why not make it out to Stubbs for a more than fitting night of music with Explosions in the Sky , Octopus Project , and Wooden Birds ! As far as shows for the night go, this really is the best bet. Sure you may want to fire up that grill and drink a cold one, but Stubbs has all of these things and more! Unfortunately tickets are sold out for this one so maybe you can sneak your way in... Doors at [...]

It's fairly quiet around Baltimore for shows for a Friday, but don't sleep on a great Ottobar event with The Lemonheads , Impossible Hair , and We Read Minds . Down in DC The Wooden Birds roll into the Rock and Roll Hotel with Other Lives opening. Also right across the way in Arlington, Iota has The Brakes and Tom McBride and the Whig Party . Travel up I95 to Philadelphia for some good concerts as well. Telepathe and Lemonade [...]
