Frank Yang It probably amounts to some sort of Can-rock heresy, but I think I actually like Bry Webb on his own more than I ever did with Constantines . I fully acknowledge why many hold the Cons up as one of the greatest Canadian rock acts of the past however many years/decades/centuries - I've seen them live , I know what they were capable of - but the fact is, his solo debut Provider has captivated me more than any of the [...]

It's Superbowl today! Who will be watching the Game or the commercials or maybe just the "Half-time" show? Get your hands up and hands high to this week's #1 song. The Wooden Sky's newest album, Every Child A Daughter, Every Moon A Sun , is at the top of my most anticipated releases for this year and is due out February 28th. Their last album has been on heavy rotation ever since I caught a house show of theirs in December, it's one of those that gets better with each spin and I always seem to find a new favorite song. Luckily for those like me that can hardly wait for February 28th to roll around here is the first outstanding track from the new album. [...]

Words // Scott Pingeton I've fallen into a rut lately, and that has manifested itself as a lack of variety here on VV and in the social firehose that is twitter and facebook. Over the past couple months I've heaped a ton of gushing praise onto two artists in particular: The Wooden Sky and Conrad Plymouth. Both bands have new albums coming out in 2012, and I couldn't be more freaking stoked. Knowing that I need to use some discretion with how much I write about these bands, for fear of [...]

A sincere welcome back to The Wooden Sky , who are getting ready to give us Every Child a Daughter, Every Moon a Sun on February 28 (via Black Box Recordings). The album's opening track, "Child of the Valley" has been made available as a free download, and I'm finding it a spare, haunting track, very understated as it begins but grows deeper, darker and much more interesting as it continues on. In other words, very much like The Wooden Sky themselves, who on the surface seem to be your standard fare folk/country [...]
Your at a show, a band you've never heard of takes the stage, they count in their opener. Silky smooth sound waves wash over you and almost instantly your mind empties itself of every thought, in an effort to absorb every last note that rings out from the stage. Instinctively, you slam back the rest of your beer, because reaching for a drink and diverting even the most minuscule amount of cerebral energy from what your experiencing would be, so wrong. And of course, you don't want your beer getting warm! This was my reaction, the [...]

We've got new mp3s and downloads coming out of our ears...and hopefully into yours. So, here is our pick of the best new tracks currently doing the rounds. They include the cantering desert folk of Laura Gibson , the uncannily Syd Barrett like individual psychedelia of The Doozer , some primal garage rock from both King Khan & The Shrines and the wonderful Mind Spiders , some brain splintering psych-rock from Disappears , and a welcome return from alt-country Canadians The Wooden Sky . Enjoy six of [...]

The Wooden Sky ended up on the "Oops, I missed this one in 20093 list for albums that would have made the top ten list had I heard them that year with If I Don't Come Home You'll Know I'm Gone . This album was followed up by, what I considered to be, a less than par EP in City of Lights . It's redemption time though. "Child of the Valley" is the lead off track for the band's 3rd studio album titled Every Child a Daughter, Every Moon [...]

Every Child a Daughter, Every Moon a Sun is the new album from Canadian alt-country outfit The Wooden Sky. If last year's City of Lights EP was just a little tease, this track should finish the job of converting you into a fan of The Wooden Sky. Look for the album on 2/28. Check out the new track from the Wooden Sky, the Toronto band that seems to be catching a wave of buzz lately. They are working on releasing their third album, Every Child a Daughter, Every Moon a Sun , on Blackbox Recordings. The country tinged song sings of loneliness, with a sparse and powerfully dense feel that really exemplifies this band's maturity and sensibilities. The band will be touring like crazy in support of this new album. 2/24 Ottawa, ON @ Ritual Night Club 2/25 Quebec City, QC @ Le Cercle [...]
Toronto's countrified folk/rockers The Wooden Sk y have honed their own particular rootsy style -- let's call it "North Americana" -- over the course of two full-length albums and a pair of EP's, including last fall's five-track City of Light . Forthcoming album, the wonderfully titled Every Child a Daughter, Every Moon a Sun (February 28 Canada, Black Box), follows up 2009's well-received If I Don't Come Back You'll Know I'm Gone . "Everyone had their eyes and ears open searching for new textures to [...]

Frank Yang Joel Plaskett is a guy who's established that he's not averse to applying a little bit of high concept to his brand of friendly, meat-and-potatoes rock - recall that his last release of new material, 20092s Three , was both triple-disced and triple-themed - so one shouldn't be too surprised that his next record also has to come with a bit of an explanation. As aux.tv reports, Plaskett and his band The Emergency will endeavour to record and release a new song every week [...]

The Wooden Sky have just released a new track called "Child of the Valley" off their upcoming LP "Every Child a Daughter, Every Moon a Sun" on Feb 28th via Black Box Recordings. I've always been a huge champion of these guys and I'm thrilled that they're getting their due credit and gaining momentum. They are rare, true talents. They're headed on a North American tour where they're return to Toronto on April 20th. I've got a feeling this will be a big year for them. The Wooden Sky- Child of the [...]
