Frank Yang Last Thursday night was spent at The Garrison, the newly - opened west-end venue that'll be home to the final year of Wavelength as well as a plethora of other local music happenings. A fine example of this was this evening's bill, featuring bands with long names from near, far and sorta-near-but-not-that-close: The Wilderness Of Manitoba , Slow Down Molasses and Olenka & The Autumn Lovers . Slow Down Molasses represented the "far", hailing from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and were up first. I'd spent some [...]

Today's song is another from the Toronto indie-rock act The Wooden Sky . Unlike the last song I posted from the band, Darker Streets Than Mine can be heard on the band's debut LP "When Lost at Sea", released in January of 2007. Both albums from the band have been released via the Canadian independent label Black Box Music , whose lineup includes other notable Canadian artists Classified and Shad . In a very cool move, the band recorded a documentary while on their "Bedrooms and Backstreets" tour; "The Wooden Sky -- A [...]

The Rural Alberta Advantage: Hottest band in Canada (photo: Patrick Leduc) Like leaves falling from trees, and smashed Jack-o-Lanterns littering damp and windy streets, the arrival of November is a tell-tale sign that the year is quickly drawing to a close, and we're in the midst of a season change: year-end list season. Thing kicked off a little early yesterday, but they did so in style and with a Canadian bent as Matthew over at i (heart) music unveiled the fifth edition of his annual Hottest Bands in Canada poll. [...]

The Wooden Sky have come out of nowhere to release one of the best roots records of the year. If I Don't Come Home You'll Know I'm Gone ( review ) is a slow burner laced with emotion and bar ready sing-alongs. It's also a lock for my Best-of '09 list. So what does that have to do with you? Well lucky reader, we have two tix to their hometown return show at Lee's Palace in TO on Nov. 13th , and honestly, it would be worth it to see just The Wooden Sky, [...]

Oh My God (It Still Means a Lot to Me) - The Wooden Sky I just started listening to this young band from Toronto, Ontario. The Wooden Sky, formerly Friday Morning's Regret, have a beautiful folk-rooted sound that has the ability to pull you from whatever you are doing to contemplate the lyrics sung so beautifully by Gavin Gardiner. The tune Oh My God (It Still Means a Lot to Me) is my favourite from the bands sophomore album, [...]

The Wooden Sky remind me of a less poppy, and possibly more talented, version of The Fray. The band is comprised of four dudes out of Canada with a penchant for truly wholesome music, the brand of music that I think the "industry" is lacking these days. From start to finish their newest album, If I Don't Come Home You'll Be Gone , is a perfectly balanced blend of on-point vocals atop hearty guitars, pianos and strings. Pretty much everything one would look for when digging into the "chillacious indie" realm. In [...]
After completing their month-long adventurous tour entitled Bedrooms & Backstreets in August, The Wooden Sky is eager to share their experiences with audiences everywhere. With the help of producer & director Scott Cudmore, a documentary capturing the beautiful & strange reality behind the unconventional tour is being released in 10 parts, with Part 1 out now. When the Wooden Sky embarked on their summer tour beginning in Guelph, Ontario on July 19th, they were ready for the excitement & uncertainty they'd be sure to face along the way. Avoiding traditional venues & performances, the band continuously [...]

You wouldn't know it from the best-of-decade lists flying around these days, but alt.country remains alive and well. The genre's latest vital release (and Canada's latest display of domination in any genre involving acoustic guitars) is The Wooden Sky's If I Don't Come Home You'll Know I'm Gone , a collection of dusty barroom anthems and lovelorn hymnals with instant appeal. It's a workmanlike, emotive album, guided by the sure hand of producer Howard Bilerman (Ravens & Chimes, Arcade Fire) - and one fans of Nelson's poor-selling sad songs and waltzes won't want to miss. The band plays the [...]

MySpace If it were possible to monetize pure musical oddity, then not only would Iceland's economic problems be a thing of the past, they might well be the world's top fiscal superpower. Yes, the likes of Bjork and Sigur Ros would guarantee a GDP many times greater than the rest of the planet, but the tiny country's smaller exports would also help push things forward - case in point, Sprengjuhollin (it's pronounced the way it's spelled. Go on, try). The Reykjavík quintet don't wave their freak flag nearly [...]

[ via ] It's gonna be a good week - I can feel it in my bones. That's my story anyway and I'm stickin' to it. The release from this past week I've been most looking forward to but for reasons various haven't actually gotten my hands on is the new A Place To Bury Strangers album Exploding Head . I have, however, been following their tour blog , which is entertaining. But, oh my, the massiveness of "In Your Heart" - one of the [...]
Even if it sucked, I'd be tempted to review The Wooden Sky 's sophomore album just based on the title: "If I Don't Come Home You'll Know I'm Gone". But it doesn't suck at all. Opening cut, "Oh My God (It Still Means A Lot To Me)" is an earnest, country/folk chant that demands to be heard, with building power and harmonies. It's the perfect entry point to this honest-yet-understated record. Although much of the material is on the quieter side, the album also features the commanding "Angels" and a driving indie rock song, "Lock and Key," [...]

Like a grizzly bear awoken too soon, I am currently stuck between being hungry and wondering why I'm not still sleeping. While sorting these feelings out, I decided now would be a good time to post up a song that's been stuck in my head all week. Oh My God comes to us from the Toronto indie-rock band The Wooden Sky and their sophomore full-length album "If I Don't Come Home You'll Know I'm Gone", released in August of this year; the release follows up the band's debut LP "When Lost at Sea", released in January [...]

Frank Yang Everything I have to say about The Antlers' record Hospice has already been said , so I'll focus squarely on their live performance which I was able to witness yesterday evening despite opting to see Joe Pernice at the Dakota rather than their show at the Horseshoe, thanks to their booking an in-store at Criminal Records before either got underway. While they could easily have gotten away with doing something simple, short and stripped-down, the fairly packed store was instead treated [...]

These days, Toronto has more great alt. folk bands than you can shake a stick at (see: Elliott BROOD , Great Bloomers , Great Lake Swimmers ). But the Wooden Sky stands out from the pack, largely because the group's sound draws heavily on gospel and southern soul, as well as the usual rootsy Americana. If I Don't Come Home You'll Know I'm Gone is the group's second album, following When Lost at Sea , which was issued in 2007. It begins with "Oh My God (It Still Means [...]
