I got caught up in eighties balearic beat after reading this article in a 1988 edition of Mixmag. It's great to hear how much this stands apart from what people would consider 'balearic' these days, yet it perfectly embodies what's so fantastic about the genre. Needs more cowbell, you say? I say: live version ! The Woodentops - Why Why Why (Extended Mix) (ALT)

Uncut Magazine and I had a pretty amazing relationship between the turn of the millennium and about 2004 or 2005. Basically, I would buy it every month and turn straight to the reviews section and the cover mount CD of what they considered to be the best of new music released that month, and devour both simultaneously, taking notes about what I wanted to spend that monthís meagre wages on. Those cover mount CDs were amazing, at the time, and almost invariably related to that monthís new releases, but in the last few years they have become way, [...]
A 1986 Rough Trade album made by a band who sound like an old kids ptogramme: jangling old-school indie tweeness, surely? Well, it certainly made sense that the Woodentops were on Rough Trade, but they always had something that set them apart from their peers. Giant , their first album, was defined by an acoustic sound a bit like very enthusiastic busking, and by fast and complex percussion. With hindsight the Woodentops were making a much better fist of the 'indie dance' thing than most of their contemporaries, and the rhythms of Giant looked forward to house. [...]
John Peel in 1976. As before, thanks to people who have helped me complete gaps, so I thought I would share some of these with you: First up, many thanks to Steve for this, which was actually a UK Top 20 hit single the following year, but I couldn't find. Cheers Steve! 1986...small town Ohio Elyria West High School's Senior Prom! A date with my "best girlfriend" (uh huh)! And the song that reminds me most of this occassion? "Say you, Say Me?" "I Miss You" by Klymaxx? "Broken Wings?" "Greatest Love of All?" Nope. Try the Woodentops' "Give It Time." Huh? Let me explain...our senior prom was awful and hideous. We didn't even have a live band like Midview High's prom (Me & the Boys, a local new wave-ish cover band with a hot chick singer that would do [...]

The illustrated Friends: The Woodentops
There's a rising note of panic as Adam attempts to argue his way in - having tried an alien from the future and a doctor from the past, he's now hoping these are the names to drop: But it's a great excuse for us to enjoy this: [Buy: Woodentops BBC Sessions ] [Part of the illustrated Friends ] -- Visit No Rock & Roll Fun to comment, complain and kvetch

The Wedding Present David Gedge's raucous chiming jangling guitar monsters born in 1984 and still going. Feted by John Peel, they produced the classic album George Best on the independent Reception records, who also compiled their classic early singles on the album Tommy and released a
