Sunday night's show at the always-lovely Union Hall was entertaining enough. It's getting a little bit past its expiration date (plus, it's getting late), so I'll keep this brief. Openers, The Wowz played mediocre, throw-back Buddy Holly-era, simplistic (not in a bad way) rock. I was a bit worried at first that they were too precious, but after they invited their friend up to play the saw (I love it when people play the saw! The last time I saw someone play the saw live was the first time I saw The Hold Steady live, several years ago), their songs [...]

The Wowz | Union Hall | May 31, 2009 Before I Was a King took to the stage at Union Hall on Sunday, local act The Wowz warmed up the stage. The two bands have taken the stage together before overseas but seemed to be downright ecstatic about opening up for the Norwegen band in the states. The WoWz are a prolific three-piece miscellaneous band from New York City who comb (and combine) the eternal dolor of Hank Williams Sr. with the perverse humor of David Berman and the improbable harmonies of BEATLES FOR SALE. Since 2004, theyve recorded two full-length records and an EP. Their debut, LONG GRAIN RIGHTS , was recorded in early 2004 at Balloon Heaven, an appalling dump of a Bensonhurst basement that has likewise captured the sounds of Adam Green, Herman Düne and Jeffrey Lewis. Released on NYCs Recommended If You Like Records, LONG GRAIN RIGHTS plays like [...]

Alright kids, let's get literary... A few months ago, Sam James of New York's folk-rock three-piece The WoWz gave me a volume of his as-of-yet unpublished poetry. It was entitled Name Games and, for reasons unknown (international travel?), it bore a photocopy of his passport on the cover. Inside, to my delight and horror (to my delighted horror), I found 41-pages of brain-raping insanity. I shouldn't have been so surprised. WoWz lyrics, after all, are dripping with the same punchy humor and perverse logic: "Dogs wear leashes / to [...]
