The Londoner unveils a new track.

New glimpse of Jamie xx solo material. Last night Young Turks had a takeover of Aussie radio station, FBi, and in it they premiered "Touch Me." It's a direct successor to "Far Nearer," only because both songs heavily use steel drums and it is very, very hard to make songs featuring that instrument sound differently. The devil is in the details. Check out the track for yourself, buried in the mix at 49 minutes in. ( Fader )

At about 49 minutes on the embed below, the xx's sonic architect, Jamie, shares the latest iteration of his by now practically patented steel-drummed/florid-house dance music. There's a disassociated vocal sample offering instruction in rhythm, there's the reverberating sounds of an island getaway and tropical cocktails, and there's the underbelly of a mid-tempo beat for reasonably paced shagging. Sugar Tongue Slim's latest installment in the Gold Rush series features the Atlanta-Philly rapper (can we just call STS an A.T.elphia or Phatlanta rapper already?) making The xx's "Shelter" his own. The track's video shows footage of STS's recent show at the Theatre of the Living Arts in Philadelphia. Gold Rush will be released on February 29th.

Looking over the list of albums slated for release in the new few months, it's hard not to get overly giddy - 2012 is going to be a great year for music. Several bands that made names for themselves with wildly inventive and successful debuts are putting forth their sophomore efforts this year. The all-important follow-up album can be tricky, though, especially when an artist has made such a unique statement with their debut - I'm definitely eager to hear how these musicians have adapted their sound.
