After a relatively late night, Day 3 of Fun Fun Fun Fest got off to a bit of a slow start. Partially as a result of over-imbibing, but mostly due to an order of migas they must have flown in from Cuernavaca. The sun was high in the sky before I made it out to the festival grounds, which were substantially less dusty thanks to some overnight precip. Spent a little time exploring the latest in weed-smoking technology, perused some awesome concert art and stared in disbelief at the tip jars festooning the band merch booth. First [...]

by BBG My final day at Fun Fun Fun Fest 2011 ran the gamut from 90s-indie-worshippers Lemuria to the poppy-hardcore of Kid Dynamite , the Prince-clad hardcore of Ceremony to the glitchy dance of Flying Lotus , and the operatic/enigmatic Austra to the great Slayer . Of the bands that I was not familar with prior to that day (namely OBN IIIs and Les Butcherettes) OBN IIIs set was my favorite; high energy [...]
We realize that not everyone has the good fortune of living in the great state of Texas, but between SXSW, Chaos in Tejas, Rites of Darkness and Austin's anti-ACL, Fun Fun Fun Fest, we feel the Lone Star State has got the lock on kickass music festivals and and you're really missing out if you haven't made the trek down for at least one of them.If you're fortunate enough to make it to Austin this

One of the major pitfalls of being a punk band and dedicating yourself to the DIY ethos is that sometimes when you self-release, the album eventually fades into the great null of out-of-print records. That was the sad truth for New Brunswick, NJ's own Screaming Females , but it's something they'll remedy this October by reissuing their first two records on vinyl. Also, another pitfall is having to buy a lot of gel for your mohawk. Baby Teeth , self-released by the band in 2006, and What If Someone Is Watching Their T.V.? , [...]

Best Friends Day 10 , a Richmond tradition taking place August 18-21, has added Zero Boys , Kevin Seconds , Mikey Erg , Tubers , Sexy Crimes and hometown heroes Grown Ass Men to this year's lineup. Over the years it has grown from a one-day party at Hadad's Lake to a four-day festival that brings together bands and people from all over the world to see music, hang out, and make new friends. Previously announced bands include: Against Me! , 7 Seconds , [...]

Tarred and Feathered is the latest offering from the Swedish Garage/Punk band The Hives. Released digitally On July 2nd, 2010, Tarred and Feathered is a three track EP of obscure cover songs. The first song on the EP, "Civilizations Dying", is a cover of a song originally done by The Zero Boys. The Zero Boys were a four piece Punk/Hardcore band from the Indianapolis, Indiana area. They lasted from the 1979 to about 1985 initially, reforming in the late 80s/early 90s. The Hives version of "Civilizations Dying" is a faithful version of the original with an added [...]

Recently, in Germany, The Hives covered Indiana punk legends the Zero Boys' Civilization's Is Dying . To take it a step further, today, the band announced the release of a three-song digital EP & 73 version that features a recording of the classic Zero Boys track. The 73/EP, being dubbed Tarred and Feathered , also features Early Morning Wake Up Call by Australian band and AC/DC producers Flash and the Pan, as well as Nasty Secretary by Joy Ryder & Avis Davis. The [...]

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive It's been a few years since the Hives broke out a new record and, as that time rolled around once again, the band figured that at this point in their career, they could afford to mix it up a bit. So that's exactly what they did. "While working on songs for our new record, we wanted to sort of kick start the creative process by going into the studio to record," vocalist Howlin' [...]

Which, if you are already in town for The Magnetic Fields show on March 5 (which you should be), [...]

(portraits of our friends and crew in Japan) As I return to the US, my friend reminds me that I am not-so-great at self-promotion. So here are a handful of links to things from this past spring/summer having to do with my photography. Self-promo vomit-time, go: - Junk raft photos/slideshow featured in New York Magazine . - Revel In NY interview video . - Interview and t-shirt exclusively through Carrot Clothing . - I awkwardly stumble through an interview I share [...]

Evan Dando is a living legend to those of us who grew up in the '80s and '90s when alternative rock had just been given a name. Some diehard fans of the Lemonheads still think it's blasphemous that he has been and still is recording and touring under the name "Lemonheads", even though he's the only original member still with the band. However, for anyone who is a fan of hits such as "Into Your Arms" and "It's a Shame About Ray" and wants to hear these live, along with reinterpretations of tunes such as [...]

New Music Releases – The First Quarter in Review: One thing (of many) that I'm not doing a good job with this year is my weekly record release post. So here's the second part of my first quarter recap. This is just a top level recap of the releases that rose above the fray. Released on 2/3/09: Ben Kweller: Changing Horses – Kweller goes country; still haven't heard this. Heartless Bastards: The Mountain – Good (slightly rootsy) old fashioned, female fronted rock 'n' roll band. They put on [...]
"Now hold on a minute. Are you auditioning for Worst Caller of 2009? Is this what this is? No?" -- Tom, asking Spike if he's getting an early jump on the competition "Hi-ho, Kermit, the, Frog here. One day we'll find / It's The Rainbow Connection / Tom Scharpling, the dreamers, and meeeee . La-de-da-de- dadeda ." -- Kermit the Frog (David at Montclair State), serenading the host/air hockey champion "A night where the celebrities shine, and the mutants are ... somehow at the top of the ladder for [...]

Last night was a game changer for me. Sitting with a friend in a rockabilly bar, the Zero Boys came on the jukebox. Not only did someone love this obscure 80's punk band as much as me, but they were on a PUBLIC jukebox. I had a musical awakening—Chicago is a huge city with a rich musical history and I waste so much of my time going to the same venues every week to hear the same DJs and run into the same people. The Zero Boys were a hardcore punk [...]

In the grand scheme, Black Fork lasted about as long as one of their songs. The band got its start in the small East Bay town of Emeryville, Calif. (between Berkeley and Oakland) playing punk at the speed of light. They soon found themselves part of the scene at 924 Gilman Street in the mid-'90s ... that fertile little culture club where bands like Blatz , Operation Ivy and Green Day had kicked out their poppy, sardonic jams. Black Fork released a handful of EPs and 7-inches before finally [...]

In the midst of all this new album hype, let's not forget about reissues. As we mentioned back in November , the 80's most numeral punk band, Zero Boys, is getting a couple of its albums reissued courtesy of Secretly Canadian . The reprinted copies of Vicious Circle and History Of are due to drop in February, and so is this: Zero Boys- Live at the Pizza Castle 1981 . The limited edition DVD is allegedly the only Vicious Circle tour performance caught on tape. [...]
