Zookeeper I'm really lovin' this track. It's very mellow, very Simon & Garfunkle...emphasis on the Simon. Zookeeper is the moniker of Chris Simpson of Mineral and The Gloria Record fame. Apparently Chris Simpson is also a Christian R&B artist, so Zookeeper was the alternative Zookeeper - "Trumpets" Camphor Thought Camphor would be a nice pairing with Zookeeper. Mellow, acoustic, relaxing. Great music for the [...]

Well, haven't posted for a while and I have been sent so much music I thought "I'm going to sift through this and actually start posting regularly" so I started with the most recent e-mail which informed me about a band called Zookeeper who are releasing an album 'Becoming All Things' on November 6 th (in the US), they are from Austin, Texas (quite a hotbed of talent recently) and I really enjoyed what I've heard from this album thus far a kind of indie- folk -pop mix with vocals that suit the music down to the [...]
Now let us run through haunted forests with unmelting technicolor ice cream sangwiches and listen to weekend beats. Let us maybe nestle by hearth's edge in only the squeakiest yellow rubber rain boots with adventurous dusty tomes. Let us take long trips on the short wave. Let us save up energy for Of Montreal on Sunday. Zookeeper - Trumpets Bon Iver - Skinny Love The Zombies - Don't Go Away Radiohead - House of Cards [...]

Bellecitypop! : "Chris Simpson writes songs and sings them, and he calls himself Zookeeper when he does this. He used to be in some other bands a long time ago. One was called Mineral. The one after that was called the Gloria Record. When TGR stopped playing together, Chris had no home for his songs. But he kept writing them, of course. When he had so many songs that he couldn't hold them in any longer, he called a bunch of his friends, and everyone got together in a studio in Austin (where we all live) [...]

I'd been meaning to post about Zookeeper for a few weeks now. Their self-titled EP was the soundtrack to the second half of my summer, and I finally got my hands on their debut album "Becoming All Things" today. I've decided to make this a review of both releases, since I've been listening to one straight into the other. The word that comes to mind when listening to Zookeeper, or anything by Chris Simpson for that matter, is authenticity. Musicologist Timothy Taylor distinguishes three strains of authenticity in world music: authenticity of primality, or how representative the music is of [...]

There are oodles of bands with animals as their names. Here’s a hodgepodge: Simon & Garfunkel ~ At The Zoo The Bird & The Bee ~ Again & Again Cheetah ~ The Oral Office White Lion ~ When The Children Cry Crazy Horse ~ I Don’t Want To Talk About It Dr. Dog ~ My Old Ways Baby Elephant [...]

Zookeeper - I Live in The Mess Your Are [highly rec'd!] Zookeeper - Tax Collector Chaos has overtaken not any physical space so much as my life, and my roommate / bff has had to put up with the mess the most. The phone rings, the hill-billy country takes over with jingles and jangles and a thumping baseline, accompanied by drums. "I live in the mess you are" has become something of an anthem for me lately: sharing someone's craziness is part of what makes sharing your life (or room) [...]

My inbox is taking on the form of an infinite repository for partially-useful information. Here is some of the best of that which doesn’t pertain to pharmaceuticals, overly generous ladies and relations of deposed figures of African authority. Labels, publishers, promoters, distributors, artists, thank you; I will have more on some of these once it is all properly digested. Listen: Zookeeper – Snow in Berlin Copperpot – [...]
After being away from the music scene for almost 5 years, Chris Simpson, the man behind Mineral and The Gloria Record , has returned. Simpson has chosen Zookeeper as the moniker for his solo project (his own name was already being used by a Christian R&B guy) and he's already released one EP under the name. For those used to the post-punk emo sound of Mineral or the dream pop/shoegaze Gloria Record, Zookeeper is a complete departure for Chris Simpson, but the passion for making music and songwriting bravado is still there. [...]

Sometimes, taking a break can be a very good thing. Chris Simpson , former songwriter and frontman for two influential late '90s bands, knows a few things about breaking up. After disbanding post-punk emo progenitor Mineral just after the band signed to a major, and taking an indefinite hiatus from shoegazer follow-up The Gloria Record midway through recording a fourth record, he virtually disappeared from the music scene for two years. It is this quiet period of Simpson's career that has proven his most prolific to date. It allowed him [...]

“I'm just thrilled to have another entry in Simpson's canon. He's been gone too long and this is a welcome return from one of my favorite songwriters.” –Liepaper.com Sometimes, taking a break can be a very good thing. MP3: Zookeeper - I Live In the Mess You Are People love Mineral . People love the Gloria Record . Thus, people love Chris Simpson. I was always a very casual fan but I still knew Simpson was a talented songwriter and he had a bit of lightning in his bottle. I remember seeing on some website that he was doing a new thing called Zookeeper and I decided to casually check it out on the myspace. The [...]

I hate when solo singer-songwriters release music under band-sounding monikers, because it gets too fucking confusing. I still don't know whether the name Bright Eyes applies solely to Conor Oberst or to a band consisting of Conor Oberst and a couple other musicians. And don't even get me started about Wooden Wand . Or Five For Fighting. Seriously, go by your own name. That shit is way too complicated. Zookeeper falls into that same abhorrent category, as it is NOT a band but rather the alter-ego of Chris Simpson of Mineral [...]
(No Ratings Yet) Loading ...

I got quite a response when I posted a track from Zookeeper a couple of weeks back, so I thought I'd go ahead and do a proper post on them. If nothing else, it allows me to talk about Mineral , a band I used to love back in the 90s, but a band that very few people seem to remember. Mineral was a relatively short-lived "emo" band from Austin, Texas (back when emo actually meant something, and My Chemical Romance were probably still all in grade school), [...]
