When one half of The Death Set founding duo, Beau Velasco, was found dead from a drug overdose in his New York apartment in 2009, there was a very real chance that his band could have been left to fade into the ether. Instead, his co-partner, Johnny Siera along with remaining members Daniel Walker and Jahphet Landis decided to power through their grief, drafting in producer XXXChange, Diplo and Spank Rock to collaborate on an album that would do justice to their friend's memory. Fan made video for TheDeathSet's take on Deadelus' "Fair Weather Friends." One of the sweetest live jams! Oh, and a really tight video - like if Octopus Project animated for Adult Swim. Daedelus - Fair Weather Friends
Late last night (Sunday 9/27/09) my boyfriend alerted me to a tweet via TheDeathSet , with some very sad news. "R.I.P. my dear brother, friend and band mate Beau Velasco. For all those who wish to pay their respects I will let know soon." Noo. I thought. It couldn't be. Another young and talented individual, gone. Disbelief hits all over again...It's been a rough couple of months for many. We're saddened at the untimely loss of Beau Velasco , one of the founding members of TheDeathSet. It seems like just yesterday, I had asked [...]

they raped my ears, and it was pretty good. download: The Death Set - Negative Thinking

Yeah, it is about that time for bands to migrate southward towards Austin and the music festival know as SXSW. Philly and Baltimore are very sparse, DC has a bit more. Guess we will see a surge in the coming weeks as bands come home or continue their tours. Still, some great shows to see this weekend. Here is what's happening: Bell X1 (via bands myspace) With their new album Blue Lights on the Runway just released [...]

Platz 70 The Death Set Worldwide Zwischen Go!-Team-Rasselbanderei und Devoismen rasen The Death Set auf ihrem Debütalbum durch anderthalb Dutzend hyperaktive, catchige Punkminiaturen.

Directed by Jordan Kim, 2007 If you were listening to good music in the 90's, more than likely your ears crossed paths with one of the greatest independent labels, Ninja Tune . Birthed in 1991 by Matt Black & Jonathon More of Coldcut fame, London-based Ninja Tune has been a place for an eclectic mix of artists that create innovative, quality music. 17 years later, Ninja Tune is still at the helm of electronic music and constantly forging ahead in music exploration. Eclectic rings dead true of Ninja artist Daedelus , who at 15 [...]

Here's the shows we recommend for this week. We told you October was gonna be a BUSY one!! We had to mention the NIN show even though it's in San Antonio (close enough). And the best part is Ghostland Observatory is opening up for them!! If you don't believe me, check it out here . Monday (10/20) : Girl Talk, Grand Buffet, Hearts of Darkness at Emo's (outside) [ SOLD OUT ] (Doors @ 9, Show @ 10) Weezer, Tokyo Police [...]
May 15, The Death Set were welcomed near the end of the spring road by their Brooklyn family with an afternoon rooftop show for as many kids as could precariously crowd-swim the skies thereon. Ninjasonik, Bikes in the Kitchen, Newmore Switchblades, Rabbitfoot, and friends. Pitchfork TV was there to capture it all in multi-angle full-frenzy view, part 1 of 2.

Was excited to see a poster for the upcoming Dublin show by TheDeathSet . Generally not my cup of tea with regard to listening to the music at home on a Sunday afternoon but their live show is an experience that should not be missed! Got to see them a few times during SXSW when they played at our own showcase. Kept on bumping into the guys all week also and had a great laugh. So, see you at Crawdaddy on Friday for some full on fun. And on another note, via [...]

With all that extra downtime this week, we now find ourselves with a ton of unused mp3s. However, rather than let them go to waste, we figured to just include them in the newest edition of our "Friday Mixtape". As always, let us know what you like from the bunch below, and we'll spend some time featuring them in the coming weeks... "Say Whoa" by DJ A-Trak "Star" by EXTREME "Torn Blue Foam Couch" by [...]

So I took the kids, the Mrs., my brother and his lady to the roller derby Saturday night at Du Burns Arena in the scenic and lovely Canton neighborhood in Baltimore. It did not disappoint. The Mobdown Mods squared off again the Night Terrors and Speed Regime did battle with the Junkyard Dolls. From top to bottom the packed house was treated to high quality entertainment - Pabst Blue Ribbon was the only beer available and the head referee's name was Justice Feelgood Marshall - how's that treating you. So [...]

First of all, today is Fran's birthday. Happy Birthday Fran! Look, I don't know much about Baltimore other than that a lot of people there apparently sell drugs and get murdered and make fucking crazy hiphop club music . Apparently the two snotty Australians in The Death Set knew something I didn't when they decided to flee from the idyllic-sounding (and -looking, judging from its Wikipedia entry) Gold Coast of Queensland to the streets of Baltimore, but it seems to have turned out [...]
