I caught Zodiac Death Valley at a recent performance in front of a rather motley crew at Portland's Kenton Club. Needless to say it felt right. The San Francisco five-piece fully embraces rock and roll's hedonistic tendencies, and this night seemed like everyone was feeling a little unhinged. Then again, it was the Kenton Club. ZDV is touring in support of their self-titled debut-out now-which has been getting some serious spins here at TDoL HQ. The best thing about these rawk and rollers is that their music is difficult to pin. Their back-alley blues is prone [...]

Here's a new song from Denver based outfit SAUNA who, despite their land locked location, create some fun and intriguing surf doo-wap style pop music. The track below "Please Don't Go Away" is in the same vein as some of the swooning tunes from Cults, but then other tracks throw more punk your way similar to Thee Oh Sees . Check out the tune below or a few more on their Teen Angst Tape EP via bandcamp . Download: SAUNA - Please Dont Go Away [MP3]
1. EMA - Past Life Martyred Saints (Souterrain Transmissions) Listen: Anteroom Martyrs are not victims. There is no self-pity or cool detachment to their pain. Past Life Martyred Saints is an intimate but uncomfortable album, it will make you feel guilty for the hearts you've torn apart and it will make you feel weak for all the times you've been hurt and felt victimized for it. 2. Colin Stetson - New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges [...]

OK, I am in class right now.; but we've been debating what criteria determine which social customs are going to be legally protected in court and I've already stated and defended my point. Now my classmates are arguing what the civil war was about. Duh, state rights. So most of you know I either download music or buy it from dollar bins at Reckless and Half Price Books. My favorite in the first category is the new Cloud Nothings album, produced by Steve Albini and one of the best albums I've [...]

The 2012 Bruise Cruise , a 3-day voyage with tons of great live music, sets sail February 10th, and four new 73 singles are being released to commemorate the occasion. Here's this years selection: Vol. 5 - Neil Hamburger - "Tribute to Our Brave Deceased Celebrities" one-sided [...]

If I can speak in broad blanket statements for a moment, I believe that San Francisco is putting out the best music of any scene in the country right now. I know, I know, you're reading a Seattle-based blog, and I certainly know, my bias is completely out of control as I wake and live [...]

Well, hello there. Remember when we used to hang out? Right here? I would tell you about the music I liked. And you'd get me up to speed on everything going on in your life-that new job, your new love interest, or that new zany electro-twee trio from Brooklyn-in the comments section. I miss that. It's been a fantastical year for The Days of Lore , filled with all sorts of life-shaping events ... ahh hell, here it is in digestible list form: 1. I got married! Yes, married! Me! Married! To [...]

The following is a collection of reviews of eleven of my favourite albums of 2011, a top 11 of 2011 if you will. I'd like to note that while these releases are technically my top 11 albums, all of the songs featuring on today's program I enjoyed and encourage you to check them out (info can be found in the play list below). 1. The Black Lips – Arabia Mountain [...]
Propulsive, careening, and at times, openly dangerous, Thee Oh Sees are like the house band for a runaway train. Much of their appeal comes from the fact that they're a machine with four equal parts: the wide-eyed, cult-leader charisma of frontman John Dwyer, the effortless cool of keyboardist/singer Brigid Dawson, the pulsating low end of Petey Dammit, and the steel-solid rhythmic anchor of
