There's a shit ton of music all over the place and over priced NorCal isn't any different. I've only had the pleasure of seeing the Gris Gris outta this crop of acts thus far - and it might be hard to beat that, but we'll... [More after the jump...]

John Dwyer (ex-Coachwhips) fronts the San Francisco garage-pop outfit Thee Oh Sees . Sonically, the group's material is as thick and gruff as his previous band, only this material contains an energy and greater detail that Coachwhips lacked. "Carol Ann" shimmers with dynamic guitar strums, sugary spring reverb and boy-girl vocal interplay that adds a playful quality against the chugging chord progression. The quartet have so many releases it's hard to tell where one should begin. Guess I'll have to ask the band myself. [...]

This may be the very first time that I've posted about a band a second time, and I don't do so lightly. Thee Oh Sees album from last year, The Master's Bedroom Is Worthing Spending a Night In , is still, I shit you not, in heavy rotation at The Daily Choice Headquarters. This is nearly a six, maybe seven months after I first heard the album, I'm still pushing it's unique, squawky blend of distortion, surf rock, and reverb to the maximum volume from any speaker source I can find. Thus, the recent knowledge that they'd [...]

Words and Photo by: Ben Van Houten Thursday's show at Cafe Du Nord was a diverse and highly entertaining mix of psych rock, punk, and lo-fi bands appropriately capped by another winning set from the always excellent Thee Oh Sees . The SF band was clearly the primary draw for the sold-out crowd, as the first several audience rows bopped up and down to songs from the band's ever-expanding catalog, including some new ones from Help , forthcoming on In the Red . Having seen [...]

(Note: we've listed solo artists under the letter of their FIRST name and bands with "the" in their title as if there were no "the" simply because it looks better this way.) Please leave your own suggestions for bands to see in Austin [...]

Three more releases that require a closer look. Thee Oh Sees The Master's Bedroom Is Worth Spending a Night In (04.2008, Tomlab) I blame this 2008 omission on Wooly Mammal. After listening to the record, his basic sentiment was 'meh' and you know what? I listen to way too much music to be bogged down by some meh-worthy album. However, I kept seeing the record lauded all over the place and finally decided that I needed to find out for myself and thank goodness I did. [...]

For some reason I've been receiving email correspondence from Kanye West. Here's his latest message: "THIS IS MY LAST DAY IN PARIS AND IT'S BEEN CRAZY. I'VE MET SO MANY DOPE PEOPLE. I FEEL SO INSPIRED BY THE TRIP… I'VE BEEN THINKING OF RAPS, BEATS, CLOTHES, VIDEOS ,STAGE DESIGNS AND PHILOSOPHIES … I ALWAYS FEEL MY BEST WORK IS MY NEXT WORK… I'VE MADE SOME GOOD CHOICES AND SOME MISTAKES… I'VE BEEN LOVED AND HATED…. I'VE BEEN HAILED AND RIDICULED… I'VE BEEN INVITED TO SHOWS AND AS USUAL ASKED NOT TO COME… I'VE BEEN [...]

Show of the Year: Jarvis Cocker | Music Hall of Williamsburg | 7.21.2008 "Seeing Jarvis Cocker makes you realize that almost all other bands are chumps. This is how it's done. This is a show. This is charisma. This is It. You can't take your eyes off him. My #1 show of 2007 was his show at Webster Hall (and I hate Webster Hall) and this one was better." And also these... Love (<) Thee Oh Sees - The Master's Bedroom is Worth Spending A Night In Thee Oh Sees are a peculiar bunch. I instantly attached to the album, but after a while I found myself only listening to a few key songs. After I noticed that I went back and listened to the other songs and there was nothing wrong with them, they just didn't grab me. This release appears to be the first big release by TOS , so I am excited [...]

2008 was a great year for good music and a pretty good year for great music. I kept expanding my list from 20 to 25 to 30, and then back down to 20 (sort of). Deciding what would be my #10 took forever. (The top #9 have been there for a while, with the order shuffling around till seconds from this posting.) And actually my Top 5 were as close as they've been in ages. My rules: whatever year an album is first made available in any legally obtainable format (CD, vinyl, digital, etc), that is the year it's eligible. [...]

In Latin, they used to say, De gustibus non est disputandum . Roughly translated it means, I'm right and you're wrong. No really, it translates to There's no accounting for taste . Since this blog is a one person show, this list was created in a vacuum. The only debates that happened putting this list together went on inside my head, and since my tastes lean toward pop, this list reflects just that. As far as how this year compares with previous years, there wasn't one record that jumped out at me a screamed best record of the [...]
