Tonight you get a chance to see that material performed live as the band will be celebrating the release of the new record with an intimate performance at Union Pool. Sounds like a great way to um...take it easy on a Monday night! (Sorry pun haters!) Phosphorescent - "The Mermaid Parade" Tuesday: [...]

hangedup - "klang klang" (download) Hangedup is/was a two-piece band from Montreal consisting of Genevieve Heistek of Sackville on viola, and Eric Craven (now of Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra La La Band ) on drums and percussion. Most of their stuff is fairly high energy, and very unique stuff. I'm not sure they're around anymore, as they haven't released anything since 2005, but I'd highly recommend any of their records if you're into this [...]
Love (<) Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra -La-La Band - 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons I am a HUGE fan of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, so anything that is even remotely related to that collective is going to be given a stern listen, and is probably going to be favored more so that it sometimes ought to be. This is usually not the case with A Silver Mt. Zion (meaning they're usually pretty good all on their own). This album goes with [...]
A lot of people consider Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band (aka A Silver Mt. Zion) a petty knock-off of the glorious Godspeed You! Black Emperor. In fact, comparison seems necessary with every review of the band, but the two bands are very, very different from each other. You may have read that I listed 13 Blues For Thirteen Moons as one of the top five post-rock albums of the year . Pitchfork disagrees, stating that it is a terribly pretentious album. Yeah, I can see that. I can also [...]

Yessir, I think it's time to put out a list of what I consider the best five post-rock albums of the year. Most of them have something drastically different from your typical post-rock, and have therefore merited themselves to this list, so enjwoi: #5 - Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band , formally known as A Silver Mt. Zion - 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons While Menuk's voice (and the band's newest name) never ceases to piss me off, this album deserves some credit. It got [...]
13 Blues For Thirteen Moons begins with a soothing instrumental drone intro that is split into 12 very short untitled tracks before springing into the intensive politically driven "1,000,000 Died To Make This Sound". Efrim Menuck brings a protest/demonstration impression to all four songs through his anguish chanting-like vocals. The forceful and catastrophic sound provides a backdrop of hardship and disagreement while the loud and melodic finishes suggest a triumphant end by overcoming adversities. Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band's latest is one heck of an album to digest, it is rather abstract and sometime pretentious; [...]

New Wax Fans of A Silver Mt. Zion have long been clamoring for a follow-up to 2005's stunning Horses in the Sky , and those acerbic Canadians have finally delivered with 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons , their fifth LP on Constellation Records. The first thing to note about this thirteen-track album is the first twelve tracks blow by in [...]

The thick drizzle of a thunderstorm was the perfect setting for an evening of pounding, powerful, moving, eerie music from this experimental Canadian collective. I was familiar with their music, thanks to my future Brother-in-Law, Adam (aka html ninja, Silver Galactus), who introduced them to me, along with Godspeed and Fly Pan Am. And he even made the trip up from Cincinnati last night to witness in person the music he had been absorbing through speakers and headphones for the past nine years. The opener, Eric Chenaux, also from Canada, had one brief moment of beauty [...]
Monday: Los Campesinos! + Titus Andronicus @ Bowery Ballroom 7:30pm $15 After seeing Los Campesinos! last week I can pretty much say that this is a band you cannot afford to miss, at all, ever! Throw in the fact that the absolutely amazing Titus Andronicus will be hitting the stage before them and you have yourselves a bona fide reason to leave the house on a Monday night! Los Campesinos! - "We
I am very confused by the history and differences between all the Mt. Zion collectives. Since the demise of Godspeed You Black Emperor, various musicians have recorded under a wide array of the moniker to varying degrees of success and I always have to listen to know which album I'm actually trying to listen to. This time around the band are going by the extremely wordy name - Thee Silver Mt.

It's a pretty great week for new releases. If you're heading out to your local record store here are a few we recommend. Also just a quick side note. We have decided to forgo an mp3 for the Raconteurs new album in fear of disappointing the Web Sherriff. He's been in such good spirits lately, wishing so many people Happy Easter . We defiantly don't want to be held accountable for upsetting him. Make sure you check the album out though because it is good. I recommend purchasing it on vinyl; I know that's what I'll be [...]

I haven't had time to probably review all the new albums I've been listening to lately, so instead, we're going with a one paragraph blurb about whether or not the releases met the expectations of my discerning ear. Here are the results: Destroyer: Trouble in Dreams Rating: 7.7 (out of 10) A sprawling record veering between musical styles between songs and in the midst of tracks, conveying Dan Bejar's continued brilliance as a songwriter while broadening his [...]
This is eerie. And unsettling. The music of Thee Silver Mt Zion Memorial Orchestra And Tra La La Band is about as far from pop music as you could get. It is the antithesis of easy listening. It is not comfortable. Nor light. Nor could it be described as pleasant. This is disturbing, dramatic music. Music that puts you on edge. That seems to delight in distressing you. These are songs that live in the shadows. Slowly revealing themselves in all their complicated, layered glory. In parts strong, vulnerable, ugly, beautiful, defensive, attacking, political [...]

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band - 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons (Constellation 2008) Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band - 13 Blues for Thirteen Moons / Constellation Where are any of us going with post-rock anymore? Increasingly, the musical community finds itself wandering down blind alleys and subterranean Turkish baths struggling to find new territory to cover to make it post-rock, to make it post-anything, or simply to make it bearable for themselves. Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Mogwai knew. We [...]

"Our schools look like prisons, and our prisons look like malls" Horses in the Sky -- A Silver Mt. Zion I saw A Silver Mt. Zion with Black Ox Orkestar at the Middle East last Wednesday night. An amazing show. My review for Bostonist should post later today or tomorrow. I'll link to it when it's up. If you don't know, A Silver Mt. Zion was formed by Godspeed You! Black Emperor's Efrim Menuck, Sophie [...]
my new friend Sam offers this of the Silver Mt. Zion show at the MidEast last week. I post this because he's a cool cat, and because it's only their second show in this country. ever. so thanks Sam. I was really disappointed when they finally came on at 10:30PM, thinking to myself "What the fuck? Where is the grand piano I know they are carting around for this tour and why are there two guitar amps up there? What the fuck is ASM without a piano?" But [...]
