Pavla Kopecna All throughout Theoretical Girl's set at SxSW back in March , I was wracking my brain trying to figure out who Amy Turnnidge, she who is the central abstract idea of the band, reminded me of. This didn't keep me from enjoying her set, but it was a relief and head slap when I finally put it together a week or two later - the name I'd been trying to dig out of my memory banks was Sarah Blackwood. Not the icy electro-pop queen she now is with Client , [...]

Once again, it's time to post some songs I meant to have up on the blog ages ago but then got lazy/depressed/forgetful/distr acted or simply figured that everyone else had already posted them so what's the point? until now. I'm sorry, little mp3s. Come join your brothers and sisters on the courtyard of this fine prison of mine. Just don't complain about the lack of organisation. ~ The Mary Onettes - "Puzzles" ~ ~ The Joy Formidable - "Greyhounds In The Shade" ~ ~ Spiral Beach [...]

It's not quite so mental this week on Edinburgh's live circuit. There are quite a few interesting gigs, but not all that many unmissable ones, so I think it might be easier to pick and choose a couple without overburdening yourself. Last week's strategy of driving to gigs in order to prevent excessive alcohol consumption proved extremely successful (until the weekend, but then the weekend is supposed to be for fun so bugger off, besides, it's not every day your label has an EP launch party) so I might just continue it this week. In any case, I have three [...]

It would appear that prior to writing her debut album, Theoretical Girl [aka Amy Eleanor Turnnidge] was dumped, consequently locked herself in her bedroom and listened to The Carpenters on repeat. Divided is the culmination of such heartsickness, baroque and dole. Turnnidge started making demos on a 4-track [presumably in her bedroom] in 2005, beginning to gain recognition in 2006 following the release of her limited edition single 'It's All Too Much'. Turnnidge delivered something simple, strangely sensual and full of promise. It is a shame then, that this simplicity seems to have been replaced with [...]

I'm having one of those chilled out days today, I've had a few days off work on holiday and I go back tomorrow. Today the house is quiet apart from me and so far I've spent my time drinking tea, eating toast, having a couple of cigarettes, watching 4od and flicking through my iTunes library at random. Due to my relaxed temperament today, I've decided to keep the 1000 Minutes abit downtempo. In no way were this entries choices meant to be depressing, so apologies if thats how you find them. I find that even the most sad [...]
Theoretical Girl, aka Amy Turnnidge, has been around for quite a while (first appeared on this blog in February 2007, a whole life ago for me now), but has just released her debut album. Whatever took her so long, it seems to have been worth the wait. Back then I ...

Autumn de Wilde I can't help think that if you were to drug each member of Wilco with a different and unique blend of psychotropic drugs mixed with a 40 of tequila, blindfolded them, spun them around three times and then handed them instruments they didn't even know how to play, they'd still ungodly tight and be able to play off each other with the instincts of a sea turtle returning to the beach form which it was spawned. This is what you get when you assemble such prodigious talents and have them tour relentlessly. [...]

Folk pop, electro pop, goth pop, chamber pop.. [...]

I can't believe Theoretical Girl is finally trading in EPs for albums. After years of independent EP releases, her debut Divided will be released on the 17 th of August via Memphis Industries. The date is a little far way, but Amy Turnnidge just released her first single 'Rivals' in order to prepare you. And the song, as usual, is lovely, a frenetic ballad softly interpreted. And if the song keeps going on about rivalry, the video shows Amy competing against a wicked Ching Chong in the lamest car [...]

The Boners just completed this remix of Memphis Industries artist Theoretical Girl , who incidentially I had down as one of my ones to watch this year. This remake takes the original's girl-to-girl bitchiness set to a pleasant indie backing and turns it into something which occupies the space between electronica and dub. Kinda reminds me of Skream's In For The Kill remix though not as EPIC. You can buy the original 73 here . Theoretical Girl - Rivals (Super Extra Bonus Party remix) [...]

Paul Hammond Halifax's Dog Day have got the goods to be a terrific pure pop band, capable of crafting sublime melodies and hooks, but their fondness for the noisier virtues of the indie rock canon of the '90s ensures that they'll never be quite so easy to pin down. As such, their 2006 effort Night Group was an incongruous yet perfectly natural bit of doom-pop, all spiky and sweet - heavy and foreboding in intent but eminently hummable in execution. Their recently-released follow-up Concentration [...]

Words and photographs: Tim Boddy You know summers round the corner when: you mow the lawn for the first time in the year (tick), washing can be hung out to dry and actually dries (tick), and live music takes place outdoors (Now tick). For The Slow Club helped launched the start of Bandstand Busking, a free event to be held on the first Sunday of every month in Northampton Square, Islington. A glorious spring day was befitting for the occasion, the gentle folky sound of The Slow Club [...]

The combination of reading the Sonic Youth chapter of the excellent Our Band Could Be Your Life and listening to a bunch of No Wave comps reignited my interest in Glenn Branca . Unfortunately, Branca's name is just as likely to show up in the same sentence with "pretentious" as it is to appear with "Sonic Youth" or "No Wave." While I disagree with the pretentious tag, I can understand how minimalist electric guitar symphonies can wear on a listener (including myself). It says something that [...]

Frank Yang The last night of SxSW began not on 6th St, where it normally does, but down at the Auditorium Shores amphitheatre where the festival puts on large-scale free shows for the locals by way of thanks for putting up with the massive influx of visitors each year. Some friends wanted to unwind down there, away from the chaos of downtown, to the narcoleptic tones of Beach House . The last time I'd seen them they were lulling a dozen or so people to sleep beside a roaring fire in the front [...]
