DUBAI is somewhere between Brooklyn and Lyon... A new band comprised of These Are Powers ' Anna Barie and her husband Johannes Buff ( Le Knell ) only have one demo up on their Soundcloud but apparently we can expect more soon. 'Unsaid' is a sweet piece of psychedelic drone pop, download it below. I'd like to dedicate this to my co-blogger who moved to Dubai to be a stewardess. (I didn't just make that up!) Unsaid Like Dubai.

Mr. Ted McGrath of the now hiatused Antimagic (and ex- These Are Powers ) has put together an album under his solo moniker ATM . The EP is called The Slow Fade , and is being released by Temple South (cassette) and Creative Capitalism (digital). McGrath has fused together numerous influences from punk, no wave, glam, postpunk, art rock and experimental pop to form these sometimes-gritty, sometimes-scary, sometimes-bleak sounds. Two floor toms (one treated, one normal), a snare, an Alesis SR-16 drum machine, a Boss SP 202 sampler, [...]

While it's entirely possible that you've never heard of Netherlands-based avant-luthier Yuri Landman, it's highly unlikely you'll fail to recognize the bands he's built eccentric, amazing new guitars for. Whether it's hosting workshops on how to create instruments around Europe, explaining how to prepare a guitar, or building personalized instruments for high profile musicians, Landman keeps very busy, propagating the weirder side of one of rock music's most prominent and traditional instruments. Landman initially worked as an award-winning comic book artist and then played bass and guitar for indie rockers Zoppo. However, after five years of creating various [...]

During a private shoot with QC last year, members of the bands Real Estate and These Are Powers along with Market Hotel pioneers, broke down the venue and its importance in the Brooklyn music community. Market Hotel served as a birthright [...]

There's a whole mess of great shows happening tomorrow (Woods and Ducktails at Monster Island, Eola and friends at Silent Barn, Oh My Rockness show at Pianos), but I wanted to recommend this one. It's a show in memory of Ariel Panero, a promoter in New York and member of Tough Knuckles, who recently passed away at the age of 25. I never met him, but he started Less Artist More Condos, which is pretty damn amazing. Sure, I've written about Grooms, These Are Powers, and Darlings a ton of times, and you can see them frequently in New York, [...]

Born and raised in Chicago, relocated in NYC, Bill Salas dj and produces under the name of Brenmar , when he's not touring with his band These Are Powers. Here are some of our favorite weird dark gems and year round winter hits. Light Asylum – A Certain Person + Dark Allies Forest Swords – If Your Girl (Aaliyah cover) [...]

Lately I've just listened to the Princess of R&B, Aaliyah. The whole discography, really. Over and over. Maybe I'm having some sort of unconscious tribute to the life of this lovely and talented artist. Here's a tune from another talented artist. Meet Brenmar , Brooklyn based dj and producer. He's also part of this "experimental electronic music" group called These Are Powers . You should check his awesome summer mixtape - when I heard it the first time I was instantly jamming and couldn't really keep focus on anything I was doing (thank you Janna). [...]

Creepy Teepee is a festival curated by Prague's A.M.180 Collective, that went on from Thursday July 15th to Sunday the 18th. It takes place at the old Jesuit College in Kutná Hora, a cute small town about an hour from Prague. (Thanks to the three young Czechs who helped me get there. The Czech must be the nicest people in the world ever.) I was at the festival for only two out of four days, so I'm only gonna cover the time I was there. FRIDAY The festival site is a bit unusual, but I really liked [...]
