Trampled By Turtles + These United States / Mr. Small's / 04.14.2012 / Doors 8:00 / $18 Words by Jim We were spoiled little children this winter. No snowstorms to bitch about. No howling winds and whiteout conditions to worry about after work. The roads were mostly dry. The sidewalks always clear except for a few random days. It's now April and we made it out of a Pittsburgh winter with our winter coats collecting dust in the hallway closet. I think we're safely into spring so [...]

Watching the five guys in These United States make music has always reminded me of a river. There is something serpentine, endless, and powerful that torrents out of the mouth of Jesse Elliott and through the arms and legs of all five of them. It rambles. It breathes. They also tour so freaking much that you would think that they'd lose those potent abilities and stray from the source in favor of rote and rockin' performances, at some point. Yet for the handful of years I've known them, that has never happened. Every performance, [...]

Thank you to all of the current and past veterans out there today. It's a remarkable sacrifice you've made, and your efforts to protect and support the U.S. are appreciated. Across the world, we celebrate Armistice Day as well. Hopefully, we can move toward a global society that relies on diplomacy and not war to settle its disputes. As today is the eleventh day of the eleventh month in the eleventh year of this new millenium, we're re-posting Blogophilia 11. So, if you havent already, download it and crank it to 11. Look for Friday's Free [...]

I like turtles... On Thursday, Oct. 20 at Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, These United States was the opening band for a packed house. They consist of a drummer, acoustic, two electric, and bass guitar (sometimes keys). They were a high energy alt-country band that kept the audience prepped and psyched for what everyone came to see: Trampled By Turtles . TBT came out playing. Their insightful lyrics and skillful instrumentation across the band led to a truly awesome show. Trampled By Turtles cannot be exactly classified as a true bluegrass band but rather a mix of genres, incorporating indie, [...]
