I'm not going to re-post New York City, that'd be trite. Instead, I'm going to give you something a lot closer to my heart, a live track they did at Celebrate Brooklyn. Shockingly, the track is called "Celebrate Brooklyn" or simply "Brooklyn" as it was called on their Venue Songs album. The proper way to react to this song is after the Marty Markowitz line, is to yell "NO" horrifically. Buy it here: http://theymightbegiants.com/ They Might Be Giants - Celebrate Brooklyn

Even if you’re here strictly to snatch songs and not to read my scintillating prose (that’s only like one or two of you, right?), you’ve likely detected my affinity for the Replacements. Well, it seems my affinity is shared by many who’ve actually taken up instruments and formed bands. In addition to countless covers of Mats tunes (click here for a recent tribute disc), several groups have written songs about the ramshackle Minneapolis rockers. Indeed, even the Mats have written songs about the Mats (see the two songs below that Paul and Chris penned about deceased [...]

I hope no one minds, but I'm going to get a little bit political today. I usually try to keep that sort of stuff off the blog, but I cannot ignore the great injustice which is being done. Next week the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union will meet in Prague to discuss what it means to be a planet. They assembled a panel to provide advice, and they have basically blown the walls down, recommending that the number of planets be upped to 12, including Ceres (the asteroid), Charon (Pluto's largest [...]

Listening to CP18 , I remembered I used the Beastie’s song “In 3s†on an old summer mix. I dug it out and got it ready for your enjoyment. The mix of tunes is nearly as hot as the weather. (I guess I was into Python’s Holy Grail when I made this.) 1. Beastie Boys ~ In 3s 2. Beth Orton ~ Daybreaker 3. Erin McKeown ~ Slung Lo [...]

A friend sent me a link to this little gem on YouTube this afternoon and it got me thinking about accordion in popular music. Many artists that regularly use accordion that I can think of are considered pretty geeky (They Might Be Giants, Barenaked Ladies, Moxy Fruvous, Weird Al etc.) but I love these geeky bands. What made accordion so geeky? I suppose the relationship of accordion with old world music and polka has something to do it. Regardless there's some wonderful music out there with accordion in it, and I thought I'd mention a few favorites of [...]

I was in Borders the other day to pick up the new Mental Floss for my wife when I noticed the new Believer. Of course, it isn’t that new, since it’s the June/July issue. New to me. Comes with a CD. Which was what inspired me to write this post loosely based around Dave Eggers. A novelist, an editor, a father, a mentor to high school writers in the Bay area, an all-around cool guy (as far as I can tell). Check out his Wikipedia . [...]
