The Deli 's Dh Wright on tour with Deep Machine It is hard to not feel sometimes that these guys might be insane and me a part of them, and that the routine world of day jobs is an admirable path. I wonder if this chosen path of independence is an escape from the routine ugliness of life by creating our own brand of ugliness under the demonic democracy of freedom and utopia. Are we vagabonds out to change the world or are we taking the easy [...]

A couple weekends ago, Deli writer Dh Wright went out on the road with Nashville's all-instrumental Deep Machine and wrote about their travels. Due to the narrative's length, we decided to split this one up, so stay tuned in the coming week for more of Wright's account... The ship hovers toward Chattanooga; there was a procedure to make sure that we had enough oil and coolant to keep the van afloat for a few hundred miles south to Chattanooga, Montevallo, AL and back. Without a spare tire we were [...]

Forgetting the cheekiness that this brought me in thinking that the vocal on this gem sounded like a cute and lovely cat on acid meowing away to its heart's content.. is undermining the fact that Bagheeras' 'Thief' is future bound, poised, and ready to pounce dexterously. At a beats per minute footing that can easily be altered to achieve maximum energy, Bagheeras' simple and bright melody is perfect at this tempo and sensational around any setting. Loving the chords guys! BAGHEERA – Thief

Nico Jaar makes me think of Michael Mann and one of his early films Thief. A brief synopsis if you've never seen or never heard of Thief: it's the 80s, James Caan is a professional thief trying to tie up the loose ends of a final job so he can bail out and live the [...]

Richard Buckner - Thief ( Daytrotter Session )

Sister Crayon - Thief-Boxer, Asleep This trio has seemed to capture the sound of a [dream] hypothetical collaboration between Marissa Nadler and Warpaint . Taking the dynamic qualities of Marissa's despondent voice, paired with the dynamic qualities of Warpaint's lachrymose [big word!] musical compositions to create this expansive haunted landscape of a massive burned out Cathedral. I have to thank the 2000 Trees team for my introduction to Oxygen Thief , one Mr Barry Dolan, on their 'get excited now' pre-festival playlists. In a mix with the other Greenhouse Stage (read folk) acts, his track was a metaphorical kick in the ears that had me bounding over to my computer to see who had so surprised me. Often tagged 'folk-punk' for the political nature of his songs, Oxygen Thief is definitely dialled up on the punk and certainly not just another man and his acoustic guitar. I have never heard anyone [...]

Just found some of this guys stuff again. Shinjuku Thief seemed a little under-appreciated in the day... no way for this kind of stuff to get out into the light much, aside from the MFTEQ angle and the odd other fanzine you picked up from Berwick Street or wherever... But this sounds like it really fits into the Boomkat now. .. Gonna have to start digging again into the archives...

Thief It is interesting to look back on a director's first cinematic offering when you have followed their career over the years. While I have been a fan of Michael Mann's work since his days on Miami Vice , the television show not the movie, some how his big screen debut, Thief , slipped by me. Based on the novel The Home Invaders , Thief follows an expert jewel thief who finds himself in a tough situation when he [...]
Ever since I began writing for The Ripple Effect I've come across a wide variety of music artists, some good and some shockingly good. However, the one negative aspect is receiving requests from friends of friends and boyfriend's sisters' cousins' uncles twice removed making requests for me to listen to their demos and CDs. Well, maybe it hasn't been that ridiculous, but it's not too far off. I mean a lot of people have come out of the woodwork asking for my help. Although I respect and encourage them asking me politely, I feel weird trying to remain [...]

Ronnie Lee of the wonderful blissed-out bedroom pop project Panda Teeth recently hit me up to draw my attention to his pretty awesome label Cat People Records , a small operation dedicated to smooth yet experimental leftfield pop. He only recently started to make it "official", so it's a real pleasure for me to introduce you to one of his first releases since getting things organized. Samuel Merlin Molstad aka Orchard Thief has actually been around for quite a while now, with the CDr Work already finished and subsequently dropped [...]
MP3: Little Horn - Thief MP3: Little Horn - Bridges Break When I downloaded these two tracks from Little Horn's Twelve I felt like I was storing up for the winter. These are good tracks, sure, but I feel like they'll be great songs in the winter. Imagine this soundtracking a late night walk to [...]
