I don't think I need to remind anyone how much I hate bees . Next to vomit, bees are my biggest fear. No, I don't feel a little bit gay that the two things I'm most afraid of in the world are so ridiculous. I think people who are afraid of clowns are ridiculous. My mother has told me that her biggest fear is being buried alive. Hey, at least my fears are things that one could conceivably come in contact with in the blink of an eye, every [...]

Another week without water and without a kitchen. Another trip to the seaside and the potential uncovering of Salmongate. Watched the brilliant Gran Torino, and at last managed a crushing victory in the 5-a-side against "Toepoke Tommy" and mates. Our grateful thanks to Lynsey too for the Swamptrash tunes! So here is The Fish Song from neglected, but undeniably brilliant, dense, surreal desert-rockers Thin White Rope and of course we had to go with Mamas In The Kitchen by the aforesaid and equally brilliant Scottish folk-rock [...]

• I'm not a museum or gallery person. I have never found myself at all intrigued by a new local or national art exhibit. Obviously I have an appreciation for art, but the process of walking through buildings looking at things hanging from walls can be rather boring. Records (PS1), 1987-2009 on the other hand, looks amazing. It is a site-specific floor-based installation of vinyl records by Christian Marclay. Marclay is known for his musical deconstruction and experimentation. He recorded the sounds of a guitar being dragged behind a truck. He's broken and glued records back together in [...]
The main point of yesterday's post and the round up of new and recent releases was to wax lyrical about the new Papercuts album, and to repost a song we put up a little while ago.And in the excitement and haste to do so, and with some of the other excellent tunes we also wanted to post, we clean forgot to actually include the Papercuts.Obviously, that needed to put that right straight away. You

Not enough has been written about the vocals of Viva Voce 's Anita and Kevin Robinson . Yeah, there are the great, no-frills rock songs, Anita's rambunctious guitar twang, and that whole husband/wife angle-but their voices will melt your heart. Viva Voce's (pronounced Vee-vah-VOH-chay) latest record Rose City is exactly as I said-no frills, and the songs goes down easy. The Robinsons use their tools to great effect, putting together jangly pop that could have been born in the Paisley Underground, and occasionally brings to mind the shimmering [...]

Blazing Trails / Aural Comet Tails Davis CA's Thin White Rope came to me by way of Yreka. Yreka was a little town near the Oregon border (Yreka Bakery is a palindrome for you puzzle fiends, though it is no man and a panama canal...). I lived in Yreka in 1985 and regularly made trips to Ashland, Oregon to buy records at a great little store called Diane's (which also specialized in some really awesome bootlegs by R.E.M. and VU - whomever owned this store found God, and quit selling the boots [...]

God help me if the next two weeks are anything like today was at work. I'm going to be such a miserable piece of shit. I'm trying to think positively about my temporary schedule change, but it's so depressing. I might as well be one of those cult goons standing on a street corner near the "Dream Center," handing out lemonade to passing cars. That's how useless I feel. When I took a short 15-minute break today, I found myself walking across the street for a soda, and I had a vision of myself five hours later crying over a [...]

You're probably going to laugh at me, but I ate pho for the first time today. It was delicious. Super-spicy and weird and great. When you carry out from this local Vietnamese place they put raw beef in a little plastic baggie, and it is your job to very quickly transfer the beef into the piping hot soup so that it can cook all the way through. Somehow it works. It goes great with fresh spring rolls filled with pork, shrimp and herbs, too. Sunday is here again. It is time for another mix tape. I'm pretty sure [...]

After recently digging out Spoor by Thin White Rope , to share their splendid version (and several others ) of Town Without Pity , I listened to their take on Some Velvet Morning - the Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra classic. Not keen initially, I've warmed to it nicely. Soo... me being me, I couldn't resist listening to a few (ok, ok - a lot) other covers of the song, and wasn't overly impressed by some of 'em; but I did manage to scrape eleven decent covers together, including one by Lee Hazlewood himself, [...]
A good friend & avid vinyl collector used to make me numerous mix-tapes which I played to death driving around in my van. One came to mind yesterday & I found I could remember the hand-written insert & thus the name of the band who did what is certainly my favourite version of Town Without Pity. ♫ Town Without Pity - Thin White Rope Spoor (1995 compilation) - originally from the Red Sun EP (1988) website | buy Such a contrast [...]

Been filling my earholes with stuff I picked up recently from mp3 blogs around the Web. Here's a bit, in no particular order (except I started with the longest song title [& running time 10:41] first): from Every Red Heart Shines Toward the Red Sun by Red Sparowes - Millions Starved & Became Skinnier & Skinnier While Our Leaders Became Fatter & Fatter from [...]
I'm sure we've all done it - a band goes on tour and one of the dates is just down the road from you. You plan to go for ages in advance. But for some reason when the night arrives you don't go - maybe something comes up, or more shamefully, you simply can't be arsed. Two weeks later, the band spilts up... Jim and I still console ourselves for having missed Bitch Magnet on their last tour when they played in a tiny room above a pub in Nottingham. That same room was [...]
